I watched this game as a 14-year-old in my grandparents’ living room going crazy with excitement. What strikes me now all these years later is the sight of Unitas, after seeing that Ameche had scored, just turning and walking away from the end zone, head down, showing no emotion.

51:40 For those who didn’t know, Don Maynard was actually played for the Giants for one season then he went to CFL when he played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for one season before he played for the Titans / Jets franchise.

Never knew Bubank was the Colts coach. That means as Jets coach in SB III he was facing his old team. Explains a lot.

The drive by Unitas at the end of regulation and during overtime reminds me of the two drives by Patrick Mahomes at the end of the 2024 Super Bowl between the Chiefs and 49ers.

My dad and I watched this game together. I was only 6. I was a giants fan at that time we lived in Norfolk va and a big Sam Huff fan. Afterwards my dad told me don't worry the giants will be back the next year. They got back to the championship but lost again in 59,61,62,63. That 63 season we moved back to Illinois that year I became a bears fan. So the giants lose at Wrigley, but saw Big Sam Huff still that name stands tall for me. Long live #70!

Weeb Eubanks is the only coach to win championships in both leagues. The NFL and the AFL. This particular game had the best coaching personnel in league history. That still applies to this very day.

If I could go back in time to see one sporting event, it’d be this one.
My departed f-in-law was there & I loved to hear him tell about it.

The Baltimore Colts fight song. Still sounds good.
Also, I don't think there's been a greatest game though there have been a lot of great games for sure. And a number of the older ones tend to get forgotten. Like the 1948 Championship in Philly in the blizzard with the Eagles defeating the Chicago Cardinals 7-0. Or the 1950 Championship the Browns won over the Rams 30-28 on a last minute Lou Groza field goal.

Greatest nfl game ever is superbowl XLII 18-0 Tom Brady patriots vs NY giants. Upset that will be felt by generations. No disrespect to this game, every generation thinks they have the best athletes. No doubt at that point, it was the greatest game. But football is at another level now.

Was this the greatest game ever played? The video names some reasons why it could be, but they left out one very important detail. This game indirectly led to the formation of the AFL, a watershed moment for professional football.
Lamar Hunt said after watching this game he decided he wanted an NFL franchise of his own. He tried to buy an existing franchise without success. He asked the NFL for an expansion team and they refused. Hunt then decided to form his own league.
Consider the fact that if the NFL had given Hunt an expansion franchise when he asked for one the AFL would never have existed.

Chandler missed that field goal in the 1966 Colts Packers playoff game, with time running out, Colts really won 10-7, but official under the goal post was afraid to call it no good, didn't think he would get out of Lambeau field alive. Colts had Tom Matte as QB. Unitas and Cuozzo both hurt. So don't cry about Gifford not being given that first down or Lombardi greatest coach. He Could not even beat the Colts without their two QB's, but ref called that field goal good..watch the replay of that kick, its on CZcams, Chandler knows he missed it. Watch his reaction after he kicked that ball. Officials still terrible in the game to this day. That Colts vs Packers playoff game that went to sudden death thanks to a shameless ref, was the greatest game ever played. It a shame the ref stoled the game from the Colts. Don Shula best coach ever in football. He is only coach who coached an undefeated team and won super bowl.

@@MichaelForte-jn5pn Don Shula was the Colts coach in that game. He outcoached Vince Lombardi in that game. Hard to do when you have a halfback as your QB for a playoff game against the mighty Packers. Had that game been in Baltimore, same ref, same situation, he would have called the field goal : "No Good!" No doubt in my mind. He was indimidated....by crowd and Lombardi.

Not the first team to win 3 in a row. From 1929-1931 the Packers won the NFL championship before there was a championship game.
