The first NFL Films piece I ever watched, ever fell in love with. This documentary is what started it all for me. Pops had it taped, so all throughout the first half on the 90s, I literally watched this, everyday. EVERYDAY. I knew everything about this film. John Facenda at his finest…all the greats of yesterday, the clips, the music, the history…I could go on. Am I getting a little choked up right now ? lol…
This one sets the bar. You watch this documentary, then you watch all the others. Personally? This, and Full Color Football are my favorites ones.
Now, at my age, it’s hard not to watch this and get a bit misty eyed. Thanks Pop, love you.

The History of Pro Football - 1983, not 1980. It first aired on HBO.

I was a teenager when this came out. I also have it on VHS tape. One of the great things about NFL Films was the music. No one has done it better than the NFL. On this documentary when they start talking about the running backs that 50 second part at the beginning with Billy Sims, OJ Simpson, Chuck Foreman, Benny Malone and Walter Payton and the music that playing with it is fantastic. I get goosebumps every time I watch it. I wish I knew where that music came from.

Go to CZcams and search Sam Spence, you'll find all the killer music he created for NFL films from 1966 to 1990.

Haven't seen this film in 40 years. First saw it on HBO back in the day.
Always loved the old guys-the stories and the fun. Art Donovan, Bob St. Clair, Chuck Bednarik. Norm Van Brocklin, "You go back in the game until I tell ya to." Earl Campbell flattening that one poor linebacker. Such memories. Love this film and am glad I got to see it again.
And the great John Facenda narrating it all. When I think of professional football, this is THE one and only film that defined it for me.

That Cleveland Browns player who took that cheap shot from the opposing player on the sidelines was Bobby Mitchell. (40:20) He was one of the first Black players in the league, and like Jackie Robinson, he too had to endure his share of racial abuse.

Drew Pearson pushed off, and I'm still pissed it wasn't called 40+ years later. Landry's Cowboys seemed to get at least one jaw-droppingly awful call in every big game. They might not be America's team, but they surely were the refs' team.

Originated from the height of the Slave day era of 1 team of slave handlers from a Plantation would play a game vs another Plantation group of handlers. They used a hand picked slave ( punishment by fun ) of forcing that slave to run across the end of their cotton fields while the team of handlers be spread out to seek and hit. A game called reference to a racial slur I will not explain but it evolved with the Handlers needing to protect their slave by running with him to shield the opposing handlers. As years went by someone wanted to be the slave as it was a daring fun antic they would feel and used a BALL to represent the target. The Bunch Formation was born and rest is history and the history of the real origins of the sport is of folklore of the South and Midwest. Its not something the NFL would wants of its real origins but it was the Midwest that took that trend and turned it into a sport without bias. When I was 10 in midwest, a group of kids mocked the true origin as I was playing the original format, lol. Kids.

      What are you talking about?
This was one of John Facenda's last NFL Films that he did.
John Facenda AKA *The Voice of God*
Were you even alive back then?
Sure it is dated but it is a well done production.
We use to love getting ready to watch HBO's *Inside the NFL* every week.
Where Len Dawson & Nick Buoniconti discussed and played NFL Highlights every week with the Voice of God (John Facenda) narrating the action.
With the iconic NFL Music to fill one with emotion. It was Poetry In Motion.
