- A Toyota Specialist reviews the all new 2024 Lexus GX550.
We start with a thorough technical review under the hood. Then we take a tour under the all new GX550. Then a tour outside, inside, some things we like somethings we don't and an answer to a very important question. Did the GX loose the magic of the old one?

This is where i come for a real review that is not based on marketing gimmicks
100%! 😉👍
I think every CZcams car reviewers need to go through a training class with AMD and must be certified by AMD himself to review cars 😆
This review is worth watching compared to other reviewers
exactly I have noticed this guy is honest with good experience and tells u stuff from a customer point of view which that's what u want if ur looking for a newer relaible car
😊@@ladas1106ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
the looks of this car can be very subjective. but overall, this to me is one of the best looking SUVs out there right now.
They did surprisingly well with this truck, considering the last one was hideous in stock form and Lexus design language in the last decade has been 🤮
Yes- the GX 550 has earned an A in the appearance department, but otherwise it is a lackluster model. Gas mileage is the same as the old 460, the V6 is very complex and difficult to work on, and the interior looks like a 4Runner!
Agree. I would never have considered a lexus before due to their garish, in-your-face styling, but this looks purposeful and feels fresh. The designers had an idea in mind and executed on it with conviction.
29:06...When the Car Care Nut says "That's OK", things are definitely NOT OK.
HIs subtle way of saying "this could have been done better".
Old v8s are more reliable cars unfortunately toyota its going down
@danielahernandez51 agreed still have my 2017 Tundra. Keeping that till the end.
Old v8s are very underpowered
@@apt62they were made that way for longevity and reliability
1 million subs, well deserved.
I now own a Toyota because of this man

I've seen several reviews of this model and yours is by far the most informative. As an engineer I really appreciate the details. Great job!
....because everyone is dazzled by its nice new looks and it is presently a novelty. IMHO the new GX 550 offers nothing more that I could not get in a cheaper 4Runner or Land Cruiser.
This is the real informative car review channel
I got the GX460 since I do not care for complicated engines that cost more to repair
hahahahaha bro neither of these vehicles are "cost effective" to own or "cheaper" to repair... TRUST me on that. The GX460 requires deep pockets exactly the same as this newer model... even for the simplest things that you "think" should be inexpensive.
I love people compliant about cost of ownership and repairs on a Lexus. WHY DID YOU BUY A LEXUS if you are worried about having the money to take care of it?😂😂😂😂
@@yamafanboy Huh??? The 1UR is well known to be a reliable and trouble-free engine. I have only ever had a single GX460 come into the shop for something besides normal wear and tear: a coolant valley plate leak. I service LOTS of them and the people who own them are very happy. I am not sure where you're getting your info from...
The coolant valley leak, air suspension, and intake pump(if not cared for from previous owners), are all expensive repairs. Just because it’s a Toyota Prado with more features doesn’t mean it’s doesn’t cost more to repair, it definitely does.
Nice. Enjoy.
As a fellow owner of a 2023 GX460 purchased only a few weeks before this was announced, your review was the only one I’ve been waiting for.
The review I was waiting for!
Indeed!
Me too 😌
AMD
What a breath of fresh air you provide the DIYers. Your candor and honesty in reviewing Toyota/Lexus vehicles along with your pragmatic maintenance instruction is the very best. After much thought and research I purchase two new GX460s in 2023 and I could not be happier with my decision. I never plan to off road these vehicles and knowing I purchased the final iteration of the 460 with all the updates incorporated into the last model was the key factor in my purchase decision. Over the years I have owned four Landcruisers (three 80 series and a 100 series) actually still own a 96' 80 series with 85K in showroom condition. I have always done all my own basic maintenance including fluid changes and brake/rotor replacements. Sadly, it appears the complexity of all newer generation auto design will make that more problematic going forward. Again, well done my friend and blessings to your and your family from Atlanta Georgia
Cheers
Yes, I made the same decision as well. The Lexus sales staff informed me that the 23 was the last year of the V8 and that the new GX 550 was going to have a very long wait list time and that could be up to a year or more! One test drive in the GX 460 sold me!! I loved the ride, the comfort and the plush interior. I was coming off an FJ Cruiser, so this GX was a big step up for me, I loved all the old school features and if I wanted power and acceleration I would have purchased a Lexus LC, an SUV is not a sports vehicle and the way traffic congestion is proceeding, going faster from on e stop light to another is stupid and inefficient.
For when you want to drive a F-150 but your country club has standards 🤣 That is one large vehicle
I’ll keep my 460 and my under stressed NA V8. I’m good sacrificing power and torque for reliability and longevity. 👌
I'm sure that like the outgoing V8 the V6 in this is severly underpowered. On purpose of course. I have 0 doubt that in 5 years time this V6 will be considered extremly reliable.
Yeah this is actually the de-tuned version of this engine.
He literally said it’s well built like the previous gen. Listening is a skill.
Average I'll keep my ____ comment
@@Amir-ie2yzthese Toyota fanboys define themselves by owning ancient Toyotas, makes them kinda irrelevant for these new ones
If Toyota can get these little bitty turbo charged engines to last as long as the previous models,it’ll be a miracle.
It’s possible but just as with any engine the user plays big part in making it last long as well.
@theholt2ic219 yeah ? Tell that to Ford owners 😂
@@TypicalGuy84Exactly. Ford.
3.4 litres is hardly small
I’m not convinced yet either. The other major concern that is already apparent is the cost of ownership will be significantly increased. Unless you can learn to work on these yourself, the amount of labor to work on this vs the 4.6 will make even “simple” jobs more expensive.
I really appreciate your in depth reviews. Thank you for all your time and effort in what you do.
Every GX 550 potential buyer should watch this video!
I really like the exterior styling. I think it’s one of the nicest looking Lexuses in a while.
Yes it does look nice, but there should have been a big difference between the Luxury models vice that of the Trail models.
Thanks for taking so much of your time with this comprehensive review. The best I have seen on the GX.
I have a 2020 GX with only 12000 miles, I’ve been waiting for you to make this video, thank you
AMD i cant lie am itching to see your review of the Landcruiser 250 & 2025 4runner!.
Same here. I drove the Toyota Crown with the MAX Hybrid engine and was very impressed with the output and refinement.
This is the best most insightful review on the GX550. Period. Amazing work and thank you.
For lack of a better word, this was an excellent review!
Totally agree with you on the interior. It lost that elegance/ opulence with the loss of woods, metals and the buttons compared to the prior model. Even the older gauge cluster feels nicer, while less informative. I own the Lexus TX and while it’s great, it doesn’t feel like the old school Lexus I remember
Where is the "metal" trim in previous GX? Do you mean that plastic console? The only metal elements in my car are holders for the offroad gear :)
Its 2024. Get over it. Not as many people want wood in the interior. If tou want wood get an older model.
@mob4ever the wood is fake in the new GX lol. Enjoy that over real wood I guess rt ?
Concur. Lexus should have made a Luxury and a Trail version of the GX with corresponding levels of representative trims; instead, all the GX 550 models are basically the same in appearance and interior design offering gs.
I couldn't disagree more. The older interiors feel incredibly dated, cheap, and garish. Glossy wood trim and chrome? No thanks. The sophisticated ruggedness of this new model is incredibly compelling.
Your perspective is thought-provoking. All the best!
Loved the pop-up engine break down editing 👌

THE number one reason I bought the 2023 GX460. Old school V8. I love it.
Same here, they can keep those twin turbos with electronic waste gates,. no thanks. Need several years of real world miles to see what happens. The GX will be more to maintain but its worth it.
@@jamesvirga9496
Correct- the law of thermodynamics illustrates that the hotter a mechanical system operates, the greater stress that is placed upon the components. Turbos run much hotter than an aspirated engine!
Waiting for this review, thank you!
Thank you for such a good technical review.
love your content, you well cover the car espicaly underneath
keep going you are the best
Love the engine's capabilities and the technical talks, presented in a clear and accessible manner
Your reviews are the best!
I’ve also heard that the engine in the GX550 has smaller turbo chargers to help spool up quicker for more off-road usable torque. So that’s another reason that it dropped its HP number compared to the LX.
Excellent review. Really enjoyed this. Thanks
Masterclass for understanding the new Lexus GX 550:)! Thank you for another important and thorough vehicle review…
Detailed and awesome review, you seemed to hesitate when talking about the maintenance aspect of these new vehicles , it would be very informative if you could provide out of warranty maintenance expectations for some of the vehicle reviews. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to your review on rivian r1s or r1t!
Best review on youtube. The right type of detail! Well done! Are you going to review the new Landcruiser?
Thank you for making this video. I know it took a *long* time to make and edit.
Awesome review as always! Thank you for not measuring panel gaps!
I've learned so much from your channel thanks
I love your car reviews. Because unlike a lot of other car reviewers you can get technical. I was thinking FJ the moment i seen that windshield.
Loved my old FJ Cruiser- the true off-road vehicle that was super-simple, rugged and very reliable.
Your car reviews are a gem. Thank you so much for making these videos!

I also own a 23 GX and totally agree with your assessment on looks and mirrors,
Pool noodle or foam pipe insulation on spare tire winch chain.
Leave the chain doubled as it hangs push the noodle over the links. You may need to make a wire hook to hold chain down as you slide the noodle up.
The review I have been waiting for. Can’t wait for your 6th Gen 4Runner review. Thanks AMD.
I really appreciate the rugged look. I have outfitted my GX460 with 3 in lift and 33's. Looking for to getting this used in a few years.
Love your wisdom and knowledge about cars ✌
Too much screens ,, wait until stop working and ready to pay over 10k for it. RX350 used screen is ~7000$ .
To me it just too much unnecessary tech that killed lexus/toyota reliability
Thanks AMD for your honest review, keeping my 2022 GX for at least 4-5 years.....
I have a 22 GX Blackline and love it. Love the mix of old school and minimum new school. V8 is awesome and I get better MPGs in the GX than my 23 4R TRD OR. Digging the look of the new GX can’t wait to see one in person.
Sophistication gone = This feels like a really put together/upgraded Toyota and not the historical luxurious Lexus.
I will buy a used 2025 version 5 years from now
That comment left me asking myself “why am I buying a GX550 if the sophistication is gone? I may as well just sacrifice the double laminate glass and buy the new Toyota Land Cruiser and save 10’s of thousands of dollars!”.
@@beri232more like $10 lol. You won’t save very much.
@@beri232is it confirmed that the laminate glass is not in the LC250? I’m assuming it actually is still there as the Grand Highlander even has it surprisingly. It used to be a luxury car thing only tho.
@@beri232you will not save anything. This Lexus is already much more ready for offroad than the new LCs. E-KDSS gives it the most wheel travel than any other Toyotas. The tire wells are larger, making it easier to install bigger tires. It can pull 9000 lbs instead of 6000 lbs. it’s a V6 -2Turbos not a L4 Turbo The shields are more beefy. The front bumper here is made in 3 parts so easier to replace and install winch. Not so in LCs and on and on the differences go on.
You get an upgraded LC with the techs in the GX, it’s not just luxury.
Lincoln needs to start watching these videos.
Modern Ford is just pumping out garbage at this point. Everything except their 3/4 ton or bigger trucks.
WOW. CANT BELIEVE YOU ARE REVIEWING THE CAR ALREADY!
I've been watching your channel for years, and this is my first comment. Congratulations! Once I was in the United States and I thought maybe I should visit you and see what your garage looks like. Enjoy your trophi 🎉
So what you're saying is the "distracted driver" functionality is going to annoy and distract the driver through needless repetition to the point where it gets tuned out and possible turned OFF and serves no purpose. This is why I am growing more nervous about the driving experience in the next vehicle I buy, no matter what it is.
I owned a Land cruiser for 12 years and never took it off road once lol. Best vehicle I've owned though and looking at this or the new Land cruiser.
Informative reviews with relevant content. Thank you
AMD notices everything. The cutout in the body for the rear shocks was the winner for me. Awesome review AMD. That’s what we come here for…
It looks so much better
I’ve had an LX 600 for about 6 months and really like the power train. Hopefully, it’ll hold up over the long term because my LX is a keeper! I suspect these GXs will sell as fast as dealers can get them…
I love my 23 GX.. now I'm eying the LX next
Trade it for luxurious nissan gtr suv called the new Japanese 25 infiniti qx80 (LX600 is their main target)
@@sportsinvestor101 hard pass
@LBSeeinYa How If ya never test drove the latest Infiniti? Modern Toyotas are a diw grade from 2010 Toyota which is a downgrade from 90s Toyota, etc. Today's Lexus are a Toyota without the Lexus touch. Unlike Infinitis made in Japan, Lexus moved their production to Canada in mid 2000s and now with the latest ones such as the TX are made in Indiana. That's going to be a hard pass for me. If it's American made, might as well get a Chevy Tahoe/Suburban Z71 diesel.
@@sportsinvestor101 the LX 600 and 300 Series LC are made entirely in Japan. Which is different from Canada
Great video as always. Thank you
Great points with the third row head rest (too big) and the cover that will barely be used. I also liked how you pointed out the windshield and back window. I had a 07 FJ, and yes it was prone to windshield cracks.

Beautiful!
even more excited for my overtrail now!
Thank you for your hard work.
Thanks AMD! Your reviews are providing us with information and a perspective found nowhere else. I am enthusiastic about this new GX, and as an off-roader, find the Overtrail+ very attractive. Like you, I want the interior luxury vibe, however I also feel it is diminished - and this (together with insufficiently improved MPG) makes me hesitate. I may wait for the upcoming hybrid.
Lexus tried to make the GX 550 into a 4Runner and they succeeded brilliantly.
Glad to see the butter smooth V6 is still here and all of these will be made in Japan! Sign me up!!
it's not the same reliable 3.5 V6 though.
May not be the same but it’s Toyota…
The GX never came with a V6 before.
That V-6 is pretty new.
This V6 has been around since ‘18 in the LS 500 - great pwr plant!! Have a ‘20 LS 500 F Sport - no issues!
23:02 @thecarcarenut - The spare tire chain is part of the pulley system to lower the spare down. I wondered myself until I removed the spare for rust proofing and watched it work. Thanks for the review, enjoying my 2012 GX and interesting to see where the new one has gone.

the .1% that does serious offroading in a GX are like 15+ years old and they've heavily modified the suspension anyway.
Make these a comfortable, Japanese alternative to a Tahoe, that's what people want.

Considering all of the mechanical improvements to the GX550, particularly the Overtrail, over the previous model I can forgive the interior being less “sophisticated”. I have never personally been a fan of Lexus wood trim, and the more utilitarian looking interior with nice materials is more my speed than the GX460.
Considering the new Land Cruiser isn’t really any less expensive if you get any options and the GX is just better equipped for similar cost, I think the GX hits the nail on the head. If a buyer wants more luxury the LX600 is waiting, if they need a 3rd row and have no interest in off roading the TX is the answer. I think the GX being focused on all terrain use is a good spot, they might as well just make Overtrail the only trim as far as I’m concerned and offer it with or without a 3rd row.
The Land Cruiser is reported to be in the $50K range while the GX 550 can range up to $80K, so there is a big spread in price here! The bigger question s: why buy a GX 550 when you can get the 4Runner cheaper and not worry so much about denting up the more expensive GX?
Love the vid and your hair cut my brother.. The Lord bless you and keep you.. stay safe..
You are right about the sophistication part for the new Lexus Gx550 I think they were so focused on beating the new defender that they forgot about what made the old Gx so good
Now, the older gx460 had a naturally aspirated v-8, this one has a hot rodded v-6, with low tension rings. When you buy this thing the dealership will be pushing for that oil sludge creating ten thousand mile oil change. Those two turbos are cooled using the engine oil. The older gx460 would run for at least 300,000 miles, this one will make it until the warranty expires. Gauranteed
The 18 LS and the 2020 LX would like to disagree with you
I heard the GX has smaller turbos, which would make sense as I recall seeing specs that show it producing peak power at a lower rpm (4800 vs 5200) and peak torque starting from a lower rpm as well (2000 vs 2400).
Great point, my gut instincts tell me it will probably last a lot longer because less forced turbo compression.
Unfortunately, requires premium fuel. Doesn't make sense, being detuned from the Tundra.
@@jamesemanner9671 it's not detuned, just differently tuned (produces the same torque). I dont mind the premium fuel requirement, i think it can actually help keep egts down when throttle position and load are high.
Bulls on Parade. Love it!
We purchased a 23 GX460 because of the direction Toyota went with the GX550. Also bought a used 16 GX. Makes me think of Mad Max…”Last of the Big Block V8’s”.
Regarding GX460: talk about the torque curve of the engine.
That's what matters in towing also, Why this engine make so little power is because lower
power in a larger engine reduces cylinder heat and pressure while increasing the duty cycle of
the engine, That's why your low power GX460 can run at high BPM with no issue, The heads are large high port headsg and the lower aluminum intake has a tunnel ram design. All this for only 270 Lbs of torque, This is why this engine does not break. Regarding new GX550, it will be facing high temperatures in smaller block. Simple physics tells you that to move easily 2.5 tons, you need a bigger engine, not smaller. We shall see, but I doubt that this 550 have the same long-term reliability built in as an old 460 had.
I agree with you 100% but you also have to take into account that fact that Lexus 460 is ancient and since then times have changed. There is a lot of R&D going on in Toyota in terms of metallurgy on a daily basis. I also have my doubts about this new engine but am open minded. Perhaps they are using even more durable materials. After all back in the day an F1 engine was 3000 CC V10 and they were blowing up almost every race. These days they are 1.6 litre v6 and much much much reliable due to advancements in CFD metallurgy etc.
@fahedsayed2201 Up until 2 weeks ago I was so sure that I will get the new one, which I was waiting for for the last 3 years, that I missed the sale of the 23 460 in December-January, so I had to get the remaining 460 with the options I wanted in another state, which I happily purchased last week )).
I am open minded and do believe in Toyota engineering department BUT... The whole concept of globalization is to reduce cost to the manufacturers and make people spend more on everything. They are pushing for the disposable things with less repairability or no repair options if possible, their moto is "you will own nothing and will be happy about it " Toyota must follow this path as well, unfortunately. The reliability and longevity is not number one goal anymore with no one.
@@TheWinwin4all You sound like a wise man. Congratulations on your new 460. To be brutally honest if i had to choose between a 460 or 550 i would also go for 460. But like i said we need time before passing final judgement on the new engine. You know i remember when hybrids came out everyone said ohh so complicated but now the 2.5 hybrid camry easily does 500k km without issues. I know this because i live in Dubai where many taxis are Camry hybrids and i often take feedback from the drivers.
@@fahedsayed2201 The main reason why I got 460 is that new 550 with it's huge lcd panel, lack of wood accents, cheaper looking interior and plain Toyota steering wheel has lost it's Lexus soul. 460 with it's push buttons and ambient real incandescent bulbs light has the warmth and comfort which the new 550 is absent from. I drove back home 14 hours , 8 hours during night time and I was able to turn off the small lcd panel and dimmed to the minimum the dashboard lights, just this makes the older design cars driving at night more enjoyable and stress free. All these new big lcd panels are the true distress to the eyes because of the constant frequency getting projected in to your eyes, even though you can't see it with naked eye.
@@fahedsayed2201
So one would have to wait several years to get the feedback data on the GX 550, I could not wait this long and my Dad always told me not to buy a car in its introductory first year because inevitable issues are going to arise. I bought the 460 with these facts in mind, plus the GX 460 had many years of engineering under its belt.
Oh! You got one👏👏
Unfortunately doesn’t seem like the turbo motor will be as reliable as V8 GX460 over time. More that can brake it seems, but may be wrong. We will see, will definitely wait some years before taking a chance.
Don't have to wait, it's going to cost half the cost of the car for a repair in 10 years.
@@UncleSarkis What is that based on? I have a turbocharged 2015 Ford and it's engine has been perfect now nearing 10 years of ownership. I think most people would suggest that a Toyota/Lexus product would be even more reliable than a Ford, so if ours has been fine dont you think this thing will go 150-200% further before anything emerges?
@@ALMX5DP very well said and excellent observation. This engine seems to have been purposely reconfigured and implemented to operate in a constant condition of very minimal stress which is always a strong indicator of longevity over time.
@@ALMX5DPnotice how there was no reply to your comment. Very possible to make a reliable turbo engine. People are acting as if it’s new technology or Toyota’s first turbo engine. Turbocharged engines is old school tech and has improved lots since the 80s/90s. Only one thing has to be said though is that basic maintenance is more important than ever and when something does need to be done on this specific engine it will cost more. But I wouldn’t worry if anyone knows how to make a good engine it’s Toyota
