About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

Edith was my hero when she stood up to Archie. I just loved when she showed she's no push over
Yeah, the way Edith paid her half of the mortgage. Oh wait... Why didn't she just ask for some money. My wife of 42 years does. And guess what? I never refuse her. Somebody put Edith up to this feminist nonsense. Husband and wife are a team, not a business.
@@jeffreygranger6913 "Why didn't she just ask for some money?" because she wanted to buy the TV for Archie herself. She even says so in the episode.
@@pisto30 That puts a different light on it. It wasn't like Edith to act that way. Now that I see the motivation, it was quite in character. Thank you for the correction.

@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadona With what? I feel great.
There are/were literally women who held the home front as did Edith. They were unheralded, yet the true backbone of families. Great respect and ♥️.
While men are expected to work and act like an ATM for women while being blamed for EVERYTHING!

That's telling him, Edith. I loved the Edith Bunker character. She was sweet, lovable and even-tempered. But, if the issue was important, Edith wasted no time putting Archie in his place. God bless and RIP to Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor. They made a terrific pair.❤😊🎉🙏
They sure did!
When Edith starts bobbing up and down you know she’s really upset!
A great actress draws you in and makes you feel and care about the character. That was Jean Stapelton.
She was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT as Edith Bunker. I’ve watched her interview on PBS called “Pioneers of American Television.” & she exemplified Grace & Intelligence.
#RIHJEANSTAPLETON
Factz! She made u love Edith's character. I hope I Marry a woman like Edith but loves sports too
I agree with all three of you!!! Jean Stapleton was great as Edith Bunker!! A great actress and a great character!!
She was absolutely a gifted actor. Pure genius.
@@verlinden80I hope you can find her
The fact that she was able to put up with Archie's bs for 30 years, is a testament to the type of person that she was.

@@michelinelalonde2217 Yes...I know that All in the Family is a tv sitcom.
Why would you ask such an asinine question?
Love this show!! Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor were absolutely fantastic ❤
I love Edith's comment: "I ain't a communist; I voted for Jimmy Carter." So true.
I also love it at the end telling Archie to clean up and that she isn't paying HIM for doing it either. Archie hoisted by his own petard.
This is an astounding scene! I absolutely love it. I can only imagine how many women this helped at the time it aired. Edith helped women to stand up for themselves.❤️
Yea now they're all single with kids with no fathers and miserable.
Yeah, until Archie takes into account paying for all the room and board and everything else Edith has for 30 years. She and women like her need to Stifle!
@@JohnSmith-yb1imIt's not about money all the time. Housework (especially raising children in addition) is often under appreciated. Going to a 9 to 5 job is easier than that. Archie totally underappreciated Edith and was often cheap.
@@JohnSmith-yb1im omg you're a horror. She worked NIGHT and day. Was she ever really off? No weekends, holidays, sundays.
She was so unappreciated but beautiful 🥰
Archie always underestimated Edith. Edith at times thought out a process down to it's lowest terms and left brain-fogged Archie....deer-in- the-headlights crazed.
Like Archie said to Edith in an episode, "Without you, I wouldn't be nothing."
YOU GO GIRL, dearest Edith...You put Archie in his place and show him who has the backbone to be boss of the household! Without you, he's lost!
"Maybe I should work overtime. When would I work overtime, when I sleep? Maybe I shouldn't sleep! And maybe I should go paint the house in the middle of the day!" OMG, this scene spoke for so many of us out there! Love love love!
Loved these shows especially Edith. "Tell you what, let's make a deal." When things don't go her way she let's Archie know it. Loved the end telling him to clean up the table.
"You got a wild look on your face,
like your aunt Louella up at the Funny Farm."
😹👍
@Ari Kinnunen...Aunt Louella 😁
1:09 I love Archie's expression when he realized he what Edith was up to! Priceless.
You feel sorry for widowers when they lose their wife of decades like Archie does, but they sure do finally understand ALL that their wives had been doing for them all those years!
Are married five months later. And they find another nurse (or the casserole ladies discover there's a widower on the Block) with maybe a purse till 💀
@@winendesertrose even if they do quickly remarry they still usually spent at least several months realizing that their laundry doesn't magically appear clean and folded in their drawers, the dishes don't magically wash themselves etc etc .
My husband and I have an old fashioned agreement: he goes to work everyday and makes the money and I keep the house clean, cook, pay the bills etc. After I had spinal surgery and was down for a little while he soon realized everything that goes into keeping a house tidy and running lol he certainly doesn't take it all for granted anymore!
Behind all his bluster Archie really DID love her!
@@garymattscheck9066 yes that's 1 thing I like about the show: they get a lot of laughs showing them bickering and stuff (which will inevitably happen when 2 people live together especially for so long, i know, I'm about to celebrate my 25th anniversary!) BUT underneath it all it's clear they love each other:)

Maude also can handle Archie and put him in his place
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Love when she got him.
Edith really went out in a blaze of glory 😂
Shes soooo good that I dont at all see someone acting I see nothing but Real Edith.
Women really were taken for granted still are. I remember how it was growing up in the older generation when women were expected to take care of everything in the house and never got a day off and holidays are always more work. She was expected to provide all the meals. Clean everything, take care of the kids, run all the errands and look pretty doing it. She couldn't show any emotion without being called crazy. I really admire who Edith was as a woman. She really embraced the challenges women of the older generation went through and what was expected of them.
I kind of wish it were still that way. You never saw women shopping in their pajama pants and slippers, covered in tattoos with nasty looking, ratty hair, their breasts hanging out and a huge muffin top. They took pride in the way they looked, and even more pride in the way their homes looked.

I wish Edith had stood up to Archie more often.
He treated her like a worthless dumbbell even though she was really smarter than him
She stood up to him when it was most important to her. She knew when to pick her battles, and knew how she would win them prior to doing so. She was a very shrewd woman.
Anyone who is a housewife knows how much work goes into it, and yet is largely unappreciated work.
And housework is invisible work because it is mostly done when the working spouse is away from the home. But stop doing the housework and it becomes very visible.

Touche' Edith, touche'. Your work is worth a lot more than $1.00 a week. Too bad Archie doesn't respect that. He should give you something for all the work you've done through the years so you can treat yourself.
And she wanted the money to buy Archie a new television. Edith was an amazing woman. Archie was lucky to have someone like her.

All the work women did and do is worth a damn site more than $520 a year. In fact when you think about it, us husbands couldn't afford our wives if we actually paid them for all the work they do.
Thank you for being honest.
Of course, it's worth more. Edith used $1 because it was an easy way to get him to agree with her.
In Germany if a woman is a stay at home mum or vice versa, then the husband has to give her pocket money that is NOT attached to household expenses! It's part of the law! I'd love to see this enacted in the US. Then each spouse would do their fair share of household work and get rewarded!
Wow that is amazing. Thanks for sharing
How much pocket money? How does the law define that?

I'm surprised he didn't faint a heart attack when she told him she voted for Jimmy Carter. Archie was a Republican who supported Richard Nixon, and most likely Gerald Ford who lost to Jimmy Carter.

TV Guide (does anyone remember), used to conduct a poll of best mothers from television history. I never remember Edith winning because it always contained mothers with multiple children. I always wondered why the woman who instilled in their child to love and respect others, put up with the demanding husband that never helped at home had prejudiced views and really wasn't that smart, NEVER won the poll.
And if I remember correctly, she wanted the money to surprise Archie with something 😅

This show's principle objective was to shift the American mindset...and in nine years (when all was said and done)...it accomplished just that!
WRONG. It was simply an excellent comedy. Lear himself confirmed that.

$1 a week. Trying hiring someone outside the family to do all that and see what it costs.
She knew that, but, the smart person she was, knew the math had to work out in the end so that it wasn't so unfathomable that the whole argument would be over.
@@dbrunsrtrom Yes, I know.

You go Edith! 😊 What l despise the most is when people don’t consider housework and being a full time mom a JOB. I know the difference bc l had a full time job before having a family of my own. Here’s the difference you work from 9 to 5 and after five you simply end your day of work but a full time mom and or housewife works from morning to end of evening even sometimes during the night depending on the needs of her children where the next day continues on whether you are tired or not. No sick days paid and no vacation paid so you tell me if it is not a full time job. I consider it more than a full time job and l am super proud to say that l am a full time mama and was super blessed to see my children grow up, have an amazing husband who recognizes the difference. In the long run the love you give your family will reflect upon you. You just can’t buy love you have to earn it and give it and share it. ❤️🥰❤️
I agree with you - except for one thing. Staying home with children and everything that goes with that until they are out of the home HURTS YOUR ABILITY TO GO BACK OUT INTO THE WORK FORCE - so you should actually be paid MUCH MORE than a regular job so you can "make it last" for when you are forced to take early retirement. Unfortunately, the world doesn't recognize this.
Ah for all the times we wished she would have stood up to him!!
OMG I love her! 💗💖💝
I love edith, she is such a great actress and a great friend
“Alice Kramden” would be PROUD!!!!!!
It always irked me that every time it was brought up about Mike living there for 5 years not paying anything, but that when he finished school and started working he'd pay Archie back with interest. Nothing was ever said, not even once, about all that Edith had done to allow Mike to live there. She cooked his meals. She washed his clothes. She did all the housework to make the home comfortable for him. Didn't he owe her something? But Edith wouldn't have asked for money, she never even got a thank you!
One of the funniest episodes!! Love it!!
Idea: Archie can take unpaid leave of absence from back breaking work at loading dock and relax whilst Edith figures out how to keep the lights on
“The man is the head of the house but the woman is the neck.” Maria Portokalos- My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
I always thought women should be paid for running the house and staying home to raise their kids if thats what they want to do. It's an important job and you know it when no one is behind the wheel so to speak. I always wanted to do that but had no choice but to be the primary earner in our family.
Pure genius acting!
One reason I divorced after 28 years of marriage and being in a moneyless marriage and raising three kids. And they think you will never do it lol

Good man.
I believe in happy house, happy spouse. Both parties should be happy.
Just the best !! ❤️🤩🤩
Brilliant actors; no two ways about it.
One thing I respect about this show is the reality. One thing that I believe this shows is that one the reasons the American family has been destroyed the way it has is not just that woman have been degraded but womanhood has been degraded. One reason women should be at home taking care of the family is not simply because it's putting their place is because they are the best at it. And their is no job more important than taking care of the home. I would say in a most case situation if you show me a successful man I'll show you a man that had a good mother.
They were the best!!!👏👏
I don't think a Husband should be paying their wife for house work... A wife should have the freedom of choice to be a house wife or to earn money but she's not taking account for Archie going out and earning a paycheck to pay for the bills they all use and all Archie expects is a clean house and dinner at an appropriate time. He shouldn't look down on the effort she puts in but she shouldn't expect to be paid for it since she's getting a house and food
That’s Right Edith ❤❤❤❤Go Get Archie
