Welcome to another Episode of Ross Reviews AU on this weeks Video we take out this 2001 HSV VX XU6.. This Rare HSV was basically a smaller engined Clubsport.. this had the 3.8L Supercharged L67 making 180kw.. the only problem was this was more expensive than an SS... and only available in a 4 speed Auto.. What do you think tho of the XU6... Comment down below.

HSV had its hands tied with the XU6 and really couldn't do too much with L67. Sure it was probably closer to 190kw than 180kw anyway BUT the stinker was that Holden wouldn't allow the L67 and XU6 to be as quick as Iron Holden 5.0/5.7stroker or later 225kw-spec LS1
Hence why the L67 was "choked" at 180kw and auto-only because throw a T5 or T56 behind a possible 210kw+ HSV L67 and you'd have the same situation that Ford found itself with the BA XR6T and XR8 where the six was quicker than the eight.
And in those days, even being the early 00's, a six quicker than an eight is sacrilegious. (Maybe not so much now....)
And even choking the poor ole L67 failed to stop it
The 190kw 5.0l was still getting walked on
Even the 220kw 5.7l stroker had trouble getting away from the L67
They didn't account for the instant torque
That blue FPV in the background 😍
Coming soon
much preferred watching that..
👀
Love a VX in sting red. Not the fastest thing out but the blower sounds amazing with a good intake. The other rare thing is it still has a fuel flap
🤣 fuel cap is still hanging on
This comment is gold
😂 Yep I always look for the fuel flap....it's a fun game.
😂😂
My neighbors had onw growing up, I was always confused, and saw the badges, Was like where is the V8 sound.
Would love to see the potential it’s got with mods eh

When the l67 engine first came out in vs calais series 2 as an option and also on the statesman and caprice models they claimed 165kw and the 5l v8 went up too 168kw, the l67 also know as the super 6 was faster then the 5l v8 with its low down torque and had a better power to weight ratio being a lighter engine, only autos across the board as the manual couldn't handle the low down torque, add a bit of boost, high ratio rockers and exhaust, very easy to get them into the 13's down the 1/4 mile even without a tune..
13's lol high asf 13's any decent Barra would destroy one with ease.
yeah I had an L67 stato and blew my brothers vn ss off the road lol
@@orion5813 Wow 👌 what an achievement 👏
@@matsinkal dunno when you grew up but p platers 20 years ago were all into the aussie 5L and never in their wildest dreams did they think they'd get their doors blown off by a grandpa spec mud flapped barge arse statesman. you seem pretty angry on the interwebz brah
@@matsinkal let me guess a ford boy? These are not crazy quick they are no where near the capability of any of the Straight sixes, american or australian. That does not mean they are bad engines and they are really good. There is a 10second Commodore with a cam, head work and higher boost.
Hey ross, thanks for taking the time to review one of these mate, much appreciated
Thanks for watching 💯🙏
You need to pump the accelerator don’t plant it takes to long to change gears . Plant foot lift a bit and plant watch how quick it takes off
Back in the day when hsv and Holden tried new things before money made a boring narrow mindsets.. no manuals as they fried standard clutches with the amount of low down torque
I do have to agree.. I miss car manufacturers experimenting 🥲
My mates family business used to be a well known volume engine re-conditioner. He always told me how the earlier model Holden V6 was good for business because it was quite common for them to break the nose of the crankshaft and destroy the engine.
😅 damn rip eco tech
_no manual option made sure it didn’t outshine the 5ltr Iron Lion, in its day_ 💯
Some vt ss were optioned with the l67 v6 as a engine option
Recently restored my Wifes VXII. Currently has 460000kms on the clock. Motor is still strong and healthy. Side by side with my VX Clubby, they both feel like totally different cars. Love driving it.
The wh grange also came with the l67 in about 6 models so even rarer, good review!
I had a Storm Grey one in 2005 very nice car bought it second hand with 30000kms for 32k put some Gold VX Clubsport Rims on it as the stock rims were only 17’s I left it stock as it was our family car until our second child came along was a great all rounder with the HSV suspension and the extra 9KW that the HSV Exhaust gave it and had a very cool polished s/s exhaust tip the shape of the rear bar outlet very nice family car at the time and those L67’s have a stronger bottom end than a non s/c V6 thanks for the review
You’ve got to remember these were only 15kw down on a VT1 Clubsport. Nice car, shame it’s missing it’s original wheels
The 315 in the back… surprised me once before they boogie 👌🏼
I have a mate that has a VT SS with a L67 in it from factory .. same as these not many where made
Interesting 🤔 would be rarw
I really hope thats a boss 315 5.4 v8 in the background.
Almost nothing online about them.
Yes sir Super Pursuit coming soon
@@RossReviewsau gods work....looking forward to it
Hello Ross, very interesting review. I’ve never heard of the XU6 before. It’s a nice looking car with the Clubsport body kit and a good colour. 0-100 is alright considering the power output and the weight of the car. Thanks for the review.
Cheers Peter! Interesting car for sure
Pretty surprised to hear that neither of you knew about these.... You guys must be young...They were literally on the cover of motor magazine when released! They were pitted against the au xr6 vct, the magna sports and the camry sports tourer. Pretty sure I may still have the magazine somewhere.
@@justin3131ify I rarely bought car magazines back then. I’ll have to look for one of the magazines online. They mustn’t have advertised it much besides showing it in magazines.
@petermanuel7128 They were probably a bit embarrassed about it. The vct xr6 and even the magna kick the snot out of it.
@@justin3131ify No wonder I haven’t heard much about these cars. Sounds like they weren’t too popular. Can’t beat the XR6 NA or Turbo.
As for the biggest flop, there was the Astra SV1800 & the Jackaroo counterpart from the 1980's, things that most wouldn't remember, if they'd even heard of them to begin with. Sure, the VT & then the VX XU6, didn't have the V8 we'd be accustomed to in a HSV, but i'd still say they are nice ones nonetheless. Don't always have to have a V8, to have a good car, the XU6's would show that.
@@ozzylambo8793 Those two i mentioned, they were just visual things, so they were a flop for sure. But the XU6's, not as successful as the usual HSV's of the era yes, but still are alright ones, not as good as the said usual ones. Each to their own, as it were.
Hey Ross love your videos bro always fun to watch if you ever get the chance some cool different cars you could review are
Toyota soarer/Lexus sc 300/400
Subaru liberty b4/gt sti
Nissan pulsar GTIR
Mercedes amg c32

They made a Monaro version with this engine called the CV6.

Man, I remember this motor .
My Dad had the Supercharged Calais . Sure it was torquey but It was rough. I also notice you’re sitting very high. The whole setup was awkward.
Kind of reminds me of the VT SV99 in term of rarity. Only ever saw one of those driving around.
Must be showing my age
I remember these
There was also
VS :VT Manta built of a executive platform produced as well 5ltrs
More like a base model hsv they are pretty rare as well
Great review.... These L67's are a very underrated platform here in Australia but with a bit of modifications and a manual swap, these things are very cool (you can even turbocharge them as well)... Would like to see a modified L67 on this channel someday, or maybe even a Turbo Barra vs L67 comparison!
You mean overated surely they are a joke.
@@matsinkal Far from overrated... How many boosted L67's are around compared to boosted Barra's?
@Martin Jones None because they fucking suck no was stupid enough to buy one they are extremely inefficient thats why even GM figured out they needed a turbocharged in 1986. Look up the Buick Grand national now thats a decent boosted V6 just like the Barra. Supermangs always sucked and always will.
@@matsinkal There are a few great street builds retaining the supercharged V6 layout and you could always chuck a turbo on it and make big power...
l67 are slow compared to barra and sound like poo. thats why you dont see many boosted l67s
need to get a modified l67 on the channel, with a manual too.. i did own one with a 5 speed, makes a world of diffrence in these..
im hoping to see one thats done well soon
Need to find a xu8 to review love your channel

Hey Ross. If your ever in Melbourne again, I have a built l67 if you wanna give that a go?
would love to see you do a review on the vy gts stuff all vids on them
Let’s hope one day
I have a storm grey one. The 87mm pulley is a must. Wakes them up. A stainless steel cai brings on the whine 😎
Ahh you got some mods too, It does make a big difference those 2 simple mods, add 3.46 Diff gears and a shift kit and theyre really fun to drive, very predictable power, love the linear response
yeah it must be a real weapon champ
@@matsinkal do you need a cuddle? Ask your mummy 😎
@Jason Linnell Show me where the Barras hurt you bro It must suck always getting chopped by both Ford and holdens that actually go hard. Oh and the every turbo jdm car ever made lol 😆
@@matsinkal yeah... I bought a xu6 to be the fastest car ever. Get a brain. How's your mum? 😎
supercharged v6 are the funnest to boost, skid and still daily absolute godly supercharger aswell and yea not many around anymore
Would like to see one that’s been boosted more
I have avs calais s2 l67, thing is amazing to drive, only 170 optioned with l67
XU6 was a anniversary model for the Torana to celebrate 60s 6 cylinder performance models
That engine with the supercharger was available from GM in the states as is
There was no manual on any model from Holden or HSV with that engine
I remember when these came out.
Then soon after, you could get a ba xt falcon with more power on standard ULP 😂
yeah it was a big jump from 157kW (top end) in AU to 182kW (top end) for BA, all came from going t a SOHC 16-valve to DOHC 24-valve head and more powerful ECU to control advance cam timing as they all got VCT.
Meanwhile GHM still offered that awful pushrod all iron crap until 2004 and then gave us that even worse GMHFV6 complete with timing chain issues.
That ancient M90 needs to be thrown in the bin and a more efficient supercharger fitted, or a turbo - Buick Grand National style... M90's are heat pumps at the best of times. A unique and interesting time in Holden's history though.
You need to track down a 99 hsv manta for a review 😎
I have a mock up hsv vx l67 .. well a vx with fibreglass kit an l67 top swapped to turbo 😅
Wow this really is a hidden gem
Interesting car
Not hidden but forgotten, no gem but possibly fossilised poo.
Had a 2006 svz 3.6 that had factory 180kw i put 3.9 dif gears and a tune it ran a 14.2 with 4 speed auto
my brother has l67 swapped out of a vx calais into a vs wagon and has had some mods, she goes pretty mint 🤙

Hey Ross love you’re reviews would you like to review my vz wagon l98 manual cammed
Would love that shoot me a message on Insta or Facebook
The supercharged engine was put into vy commies as well such as the S pack, ran through to 2004. No xu6 in VY as rightly stated. What's interesting is that the power output in non HSV models was 171kw and not 180kw as per the HSV model.
All hsv engines l67 5L and LS engines were tuned up compared to Standard
It was probably the hsv cai and headers/Zorst system that gave the extra 9kw
I have the VX pilot/test car that was being used to test the VY updates.
VY was to be 200kw, 3:45 diff gears and 87mm pulley but cancelled at the very last minute.
@@live0on0y0utube They really should have released that last model, those 2 simple mods make it a very fun car
@Ross Reviews I'm a Old guy and I have seen them back in 2000's. XU6 - 185 KW I saw.
😂 old guys rule 🤘🏽
The Ultra Mang Scotty from street machine would love it.
There’s a really sad one around the corner from me on someone’s front lawn. Same colour, but custom faded 😅 not a lot of love shown, & never driven. A bit sad really
I fear their wouldn’t be many mint examples of this car
Would be good to see a comparison video between this and the C32 Amg Mercedes. Similar cars in many ways
C32 has 260 kw mate, not similar
@@Lotus-S70 thanks Einstein. V6 supercharged and similar price point. Yeah not similar at all
@Cheyne_CLK500 The Merc blows the holden out of the water. their only similarities are that they have the same engine configurations and are the same body types. The merc is a sophisticated performance sedan meant to, 20 years ago, get upper-class folk to their jobs on time comfortably and quickly.
While the commodore is some Bogan named Dave's wet dream and uncomfortable and slow as all hell for the MSRP.
even for the late 90s and early 2000s it was a sluggish car with that God-awful 4L60, If Holden wanted to make a performance car they should've put the T-56 in it, too bad they were a bunch of tight asses and wanted to put the getrag, or should I say wet rag, in everything they could if it meant penny-pinching. GMs ass were so tight in the 90s and 2000s not even the biggest, blackest man in the American prison system could dream of getting a root in.
By your logic, I guess that'd mean my Volvo 144 and a Lada are the same because they both are 4 cylinder sedans 😂
@@Lotus-S70 boring…. you put a lot of effort in to a comment that to be honest I can’t even be bothered to read. Back to my original point, would like to see a review of a C32 amg.
@@cheyne_clk500 you must be one sad sack of shit to not be able to read 😂
L67's predecessor(s?) that its based off were interesting engines, like back in the late 80s , but even with the updates to the motor, by the early 2000's they were just too dated to be interesting at all IMO. mainstream N/A engines with less capacity were putting out same or more power by then.. Granted, the old pushrod V6 was pretty light for an iron block due to its simplicity, the S/C just added weight anyway. Lastly pushing boost into them made them even noiser and harsher . All that aside, as a cheap, simple engine to play around and upping the boost on, certainly would be fun.
My uncle had VS Calais with supercharged V6, Holden lie about real hp figures, it was a weapon n faster then stock V8. I remember when HSV release XU6 with fan fare, it was unfortunately in heavy VT range not VS, imagine VS GTSR style with supercharged V6? Maybe Maloo?
I have the s2 vs calais. The l67 definitely suits the 2nd gen platform 👌
....you're right about that 👍
Nice looking car i wonder if this is more rare than the cv6 monaro
HSV should have fitted 3.46 diff gears to liven it up a bit
But yeah the reason for the lack of 5 spd manual is due t9 the torque the only manual Holden had available that would bolt to the 3.8 couldnt handle the torque (tbh the 5spd couldnt even hand the 302nm the N/A 3.8 had)
they had 3.27:1 diff ratio, the issue was the actual transmission with its tall gearing,, as seen i the video 1st gear to 70km/h .. still better then Falcon XR6 VCT auto with its1st gear to 80lm/h.
I actually saw one of these a couple weeks ago and initially thought it was a V6 powered VX with a HSV kit and some stickers on it as a nod to the XU8, looked it up the same day and learned it was a real thing lol. Definitely odd but it's certainly unique, kinda lame that it made the same power as every other L67.
Surely could have beefed it up to atleast 200kw
@@coreykeane755 You'd think so, I can't imagine it was cheap given the HSV name and people have gotten pretty good power out of L36/67s, a shame really.
Yeah the 180kw is sad
In the USA GM released versions of the L67 with upto 224kw at the crank
But Australia just got the boring detuned L67 with low compression pistons and rods with softer valve springs and different cam and smaller TB
Essentially handicapping it before it even came out
@@ESISTTIGERno idea why they didn't just put a smaller supercharger pully on to make more power to make it competitive 🤔 The L67 made 6psi standard, but they can safely run upto around 10psi without an intercooler.
My thinking is because L67 was introduced late end of VS model Commodores which still had a 5L V8 option and S1 VT aswell, which didn't make huge power unless in HSV form, so holden and HSV didn't want to embarrass and cannibalise the 5L V8 sales...
But from S2 VT onwards with the new LS1 V8 I personally think it left enough breathing room to increase the L67 power with the easy and cheap 10psi pully upgrade, but sadly it never happened. The auto box was a stronger unit to take the extra torque too, so another few PSI wouldn't have hurt.
@@craigsampson3386 honestly no clue i reckon they should have put an M112 or M122 on it as both those chargers are very similar to the M90
Wouldve opened it up abit

Why the fuck wasn't there a Turbo VCT Intech XR6 with I.R.S.......seriously. ...it'd be a legendary collector car now
@@lancecooper4646 - why? Tickford had 2 XR6 for AU, the XR6 HP (re: no VCT or IRS but everything else) and the XR6 VCT (which was also offered in de-tuned spec for the Fairmont Ghia), then there was FTE (remember that? ford Tickford Experience) with the T-Series cars all based on V8 Windsor power either 4.9L of 5.6L stoker. the only reason why they went turbo on BA onwards was due to the head now being DOHC 24 valve, even then the OHC 3-valve V8 "Bara" was the gong to bread and butter engine as the quad Cam "Boss" was a turd and they knew it.

Motor Magainze done a fantastic "Aussie Hot Six" comparison in 2002 between a VX XU6, AU XR6 VCT and RalliArt Magna (all autos).
The XU6 was quick in a straight line (but was rubbish everywhere else), the XR6 had the dynamic's but even the VCT 4.0 struggled with the BTR's auto moonshot gearing. Magna was quicker than the XU6 on the road (Magna 5sp auto too good for dopey 4L60) and its Koni-dampened chassis was equal to XR6.
The Magna won that comparo by a decent margin in the end but was still a great read.
I think a manual Ralliart still would have won over a manual XR6 VCT (keeping in mind they both had manual options, the XU6 didn't hence why the comparo was all autos).
But hot damn the VX HSV's still are bloody good lookers even with cross-eyed cambered stance from its goofy AF front and rear suspension.
yeah , remember that edition 😂.
Vaguely.
*Motor/ Wheels back in the day, couldn’t wait to get my hands on the latest copy , fresh from the newsagent
its a shame that MOTOR did not include the XR6 HP in that shootout test which lacked VCT and IRS but had everything else.
The Magna Ralliart (and BTW: have a look at MotoringBox channel as he is restoring a Magna Ralliart) issue was FWD torque steer and bad ride for da to day use, sure out on a smooth surface it was great but on backroads? yeesh it was a handful.
As for the Commodore, at the time GMH did not want the S/C V6 to beat there 304ci V8 (that was up until like 1999) but when GMH dumped the local V8 for the (crap) GEN3 (re: piston slap LS1) they no longer cared which is a shame as we know that GM in the USA were easily getting 210kW/405Nm however here they were heavily detuned.
