    in 2014, russia invaded crimea, the most southern region of ukraine. technically the war has been going on for 8 years in donetsk and luhansk too, just in 2022 was the full-scale invasion.

    Georgia was at war with Russia around 2008 so they withdrew understandably. It is not exactly the same but kinda like the Ukraine-Russia or Armenia-Azerbaijan situation.

    Junior Eurovision only started in 2003, so yeah, Sandra Kim had not other option than to perform on the "adult" Eurovision. Nowadays, children must be between 9 and 14 years to participate in Junior Eurovision. To participate in Eurovision, one has to be at least 16 years old (15 year olds just have bad luck haha). I'd love to see you react to more Junior Eurovision, my favourite year for that is 2011. There probably are some recaps available on YT :)

      Norway and a lot of other countries stopped joining the Eurovision and only have the national singing contest, because of the pressure for the kids in the show. I learned last year that other countries still have it.

  • @thesnesgeek

    Junior Eurovision didn’t exist until 2003. It was impossible for Sandra to compete.

    You probably just heard it wrong, but the woman in the clip said Switzerland was against the 13 old winner. Not Sweden or Norway. ;) we are innocent! Lol.
    Thanks for the video😀

    georgia withdrew because the EBU didn't allow them to perform "we don't wanna putin". why would they give in to russian pressure and change the lyrics of their entry? withdrawing was the only right option for them and actually brought more attention to their message than any censored version of their song ever could have

    do we get to see the second half of this? super interesting to see your reaction to the other scandals cos theyre acc really interesting 🧐 but if not i got some suggestions: ‘eurovision milestones’ is a series about most importants wins. 1965 is real interesting so i recommend that 😝

    In 2008 Russia invaded Georgia and occupied 20% of its territories, so Georgians decided to express their feelings about it and send this song on Eurovision knowing they would not be allowed to actually perform in Russia. How could they go to Moscow and sing there when people have died at the hands of Russians at war. It is like asking now Ukrainians to go to Moscow to sing there.

  • @alftuvik3820
    @alftuvik3820 Před rokem +5

    They can't not air everything, the fact that China for example censored it caused them to not be allowed to air Eurovision anymore at all and these rules is the main reason several middle eastern countries choses not to air it at all since that would mean they have to show Israel too as they aren't allowed to air it without airing everything. We don't wanna put in was a song that broke the rules, so they had to change or get disqualified, as much as I think the lyrics were fun, it did break the rules.

  • @henriettethoresenbreen4421

    You can’t participate without showing the entire show. I think you can’t show parts without airing the entire thing anymore either, but it’s never really been an issue in Norway as far as I know. The Spanish act in 2010 was allowed to preform again after the Jimmy Jump issues.

    In 2014 the Russians invaded and annexed Crimea from Ukraine, essentially the prelude to what is happening now. They also instigated civil unrest in eastern Ukraine, leading to the formation of two Russian backed seperatist movements in the regions Luhansk and Donetsk.
    If I remember correctly they were booed that year at Eurovision.

    Eurovision : All Political Entries 1956-2022

  • @sarahenchanted
    @sarahenchanted Před rokem +7

    Politics in Eurovision is very unavoidable. It can either be a dark scary cloud or a nice pleasant fluffy one. There are tons of political songs (there's a video called all political entries hint hint nudge nudge), but some work better than others depending on how subtle the lyrics are and whatnot. Even though there's been a lot of negative political stuff in ESC, I think a notable positive example is Israel's entry in 1983. The comp was held in Munich (where the Nazi party started and 11 years earlier, the Israel team was held hostage during the olympics and many were sadly murdered) and their entry was Chai (Hebrew for alive) by Ofra Haza. All 5 of the background singers wore yellow to represent the yellow badges during the Holocaust.
    I'm an American Jew and consider myself an antizionist and I don't agree with many things Israel's government, but that particular moment in history means a lot to me personally. Germany still has issues with antisemitism and racism (and literally all of Europe lmao) but it's nice to see some glimmers of progress after what happened in the 40s.

    You really shouldnt cross Turkey off your travel list cuz you have to visit Istanbul and Cappadocia. You can do it tho if they do to Greece(my country) the same thing that Russia does to Ukraine (apparently thats what their dictator wants)

    The Iron Curtain was a deadly, almost impassable border that divided Western European countries and Eastern European countries in 2 halves (the Berlin Wall was also part of the Iron Curtain). Europe was divided into 2 parts for almost 50 years. This division arose when the Soviet Union (Russia's communist empire, founded in 1917/1922) brought its tanks to Berlin in World War II to defeat Nazi Germany. On the way to Berlin, the Soviet Union annexed + occupied the Eastern European countries and introduced "Soviet Communism" in the countries. In addition, in 1939, shortly before the start of World War II, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had agreed in the Hitler-Stalin Pact to divide Eastern Europe between themselves. While 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania and 🇲🇩 Moldova were annexed by the Soviet Union and incorporated as Soviet provinces into the Soviet Empire, Czechoslovakia, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, 🇷🇴 Romania, 🇭🇺 Hungary and the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany) became communist doll states of the Soviet Union (called Warsaw Pact). 🇺🇦 Ukraine, 🇧🇾 Belarus, 🇬🇪 Georgia, 🇦🇲 Armenia, 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan and the Central Asian countries (🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, 🇹🇯 Tajikistan, 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan, 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan) have already been 1917 - 1920 (approx.) annexed by the Soviet Union. At the end of the 1980s, the Soviet Union fall apart + the communist puppet dictatorships were overthrown in the other Eastern European countries. Furthermore, there were two other communist/socialist states, the also communist 🇦🇱 Albania and Yugoslavia, which were not doll states of the Soviet Union. Yugoslavia was founded as a socialist state by Josip Broz Tito at the end of WW2 after he and his partisans liberated the entire territory of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia was a kingdom before WW2) from the Nazi occupiers in a guerrilla war. Tito became the leader/dictator of the state and broke ties with the Soviet Union in the 1950s, establishing Titoism, a particular path between capitalism and socialism. Tito was probably one of the most popular dictators in history, who held together the many different ethnic groups within Yugoslavia with his steel strength alone. Tito finally died in 1980 and 10 years later Yugoslavia was engulfed in a series of bloody civil wars in which all ethnic groups fought for independence, eventually breaking Yugoslavia apart. Furthermore, Czechoslovakia split into 🇨🇿 Czech Republic and 🇸🇰 Slovakia. 24 new countries emerged from the collapse of the Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia): 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇧🇾(⬜🟥⬜) Belarus, 🇺🇦 Ukraine, 🇲🇩 Moldova, 🇬🇪 Georgia 🇦🇲 Armenia, 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan, 🇹🇯 Tajikistan, 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan, 🇸🇮 Slovenia, 🇭🇷 Croatia, 🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina, 🇷🇸 Serbia, 🇲🇪 Montenegro, 🇲🇰 North Macedonia (Macedonia), 🇽🇰 Kosovo, 🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇸🇰 Slovakia and 🇷🇺 Russia. Also, 🇵🇱 Poland, Czechoslovakia (🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇸🇰 Slovakia), 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, 🇷🇴 Romania and 🇦🇱 Albania became democratic states again + West Germany and East Germany were reunited to form 🇩🇪 Germany. Today there are only 2 dictatorships left in Europe, namely 🇧🇾 Belarus (dictator Aleksander Lukashenko) and 🇷🇺 Russia (dictator Vladimir Putin). 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan, 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan, 🇹🇯 Tajikistan and 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan are also dictatorships, while 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan, 🇬🇪 Georgia and 🇦🇲 Armenia are democracies. 🇭🇺 Hungary and 🇷🇸 Serbia are half-democratic/half-autocratic.
