Coach Nick breaks down a part of Jalen Brunson's game that has gone unnoticed - and extremely unique for one of the shortest players in the league, as he excels with supreme footwork as a post up player.

Jalen brunsons footwork is honestly beautiful
Bachata on the court
@@tubeguy172 no cap bruh 🇩🇴
Hakeem-like
Fax it’s awesome to see
To the point that I question whether he traveled or not.
Never before seen a 6’1 point guard with his frame post up on bigger players and constantly cook them. It’s unprecedented.
It’s crazy…
I what him as a Knick fan n i don’t understand how he gets the ball over defenders hands 🙌 he so little
Coach Nicks' advocating for Guards posting up is finally looking like a good investment
I mean all bigs can shoot, so there is space in the paint and point guards are often the best passers on the team so they can pick apart defenses when doubled. Seems very efficient and like a natural evolution of the game
gotta hit the squat rack or face brunson's back
He only wants certain point guards to post up
As a Knicks fan, I wouldn't want another PG in the game right now over him. He's the man.
i agree bro
I’ll take luka curry shai over Brunson anyday but he’s so nice. I knew Brunson was gonna be nice but not this nice
@@Poosee_11I wouldnt. Brunson is their calibre.
@@justsomejusstsome8994you’re insane then
@@isakmaaan0326definitely not…Brunson is as good as any of them overall cuz he plays D too
Jalen Brunson got that Mamba Mentality and 90’s post up game and footwork!
Mamba mentality means throwing up bricks all game?
I can't remember the last time I've seen a PG legit post a bigger man and dream shake to get a bucket
Gotta go back to like Baron or D will 15-20 years ago. Both were super physical
If you mean PG as in shorter player, then yeah it's been a while. But we see Luka do it often and he is a PG.
Mark Jackson was known for posting up
Kyrie
you must be forgetting luka is a point guard he posted up on all big man destroyed them. go watch how he destroyed ayton and other suns premier defenders. dont tell me he isnt pg due to his size cause magic johnson was bigger than luka and hes a pointguard.
Crazy how in two seasons he ascended from "pretty good microwave scorer" to "probably the best guard after Luka and SGA"
he can get to sga not luka tho
He has one of the best footwork of all time. How he gets to his hook shots, fadeaways and step throughs is unstoppable.
He can do a fake reverse spin fadeaway and use the step through wit even using a right hand layup off the glass as counters. His post game off the dribble is unstoppable, never seen anything like this.
He has a ground bound style of game with not a lot of fancy stuff, just a bully ball style wit finesse. There’s a certain rhythm he has that gets defenders constantly off balance
Well said, love he’s style of play poetry in motion
@@clumsyaf6250 He can literally get any shot he wants in the midrange or in the paint. Teams got to trap him & double him in order to stop him but sometimes he splits the double by doing that up & under step through move across the lane & he makes the shot over 2 guys.
It’s hard to double Brunson, it seems like u got to double him from the top of the key & double him before he even makes a move or a shot. Also Coach Nick only broke down his midrange & post game arsenal but never broke down his 3 point shot.
Brunson is also taking and making more 3s this year compared to last year, attempting 7 threes per game on 40% and he’s taking more pull up 3s & stepback 3s.
Knicks can win it all wit the roster they have now and they maybe better without Randle cause Randle is a ball stopper that’s inefficient. Brunson is such a hard matchup, teams will be in trouble if they don’t find a way to gameplan against him
@anthonycelestin3559 not better without Randle. Brunson has to score too much. In the playoffs it's asking alot 35 pts per game. Randle was a beast b4 he got hurt. It gave Brunson time to rest on the floor and less interior work meaning less wear and tear. All that post play along with the charges. We are fortunate he hasn't gotten seriously hurt
@@WHG369 I understand what your saying but Randle can be detrimental. These last few years in the playoffs Randle has been a brick machine. Sometimes Randle hurts the team more than he helps it.
But you’re right, it’s a large offensive load for Brunson to carry by himself without Randle. I’m just unsure about Julius Randle, he’s just a wild card and he’s consistently bad in the playoffs
@@anthonycelestin3559after that hawks series I don’t wanna hear Randle and playoffs in the same sentence 😭 he’s still a great player
Jay Wright had a huge influence on Brunson's game that's still seen today. He coached playing off two feet, stride stops, step throughs, and turning drives into post ups (he used the term barkley) at Villanova. One of the best coaches of all time and Brunson is the best player he's ever coached!
Hell yeah he talked about it a lot on tv
He’s the best guard in the post in recent history. It’s so much fun to watch man I swear
Him Kyrie Shaun Livingston
Finally, Coach Nick you got off your ass and did Brunson a solid and did a deep dive on him.
Did u miss the video I did on him 2 months ago?!
@@bballbreakdown Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that one more on the Knicks in general?
Damn man has a personal life 😂 plus if you watch Brunson yourself don’t need a breakdown, Brunson has perfected Luka magic as a small guard with tenacity foot work and other world touch around the rim.
@@bballbreakdowni think most knicks fans are just tired of the brunson ignorance/disrespect in nba media with how well hes been doing ALL season
@@S-TierIguess First of all, I was being sarcastic. Second, viewers' requests like mine are commonplace. If he has an issue with creating content he's in the wrong business. And lastly, if it were as simple as watching Brunson play there wouldn't be a need for his channel.🤦🏾♂
Jalen Brunson INSANE FOOTWORK & ELITE MID RANGE 💪🔥💪
i remember coach nick, said this when james harden was in his prime. to make guards post up.
My friend. You are the Legend
And literally the first one to do it on CZcams.
Awesome to hear a John Cheney shout out. Clearly you were a true student before you became a master sir!
This video is very informative and all but what was amazing, masterful , bounding & astounding was that transition to your Seat Geek ad , huzza sir!
Haven’t seen this type of footwork honestly from anyone else. Truly amazing.
His footwork is extremely Kobe like though
Ayyyy another Knicks video on BBallBreakdown Lets Gooooooooooooooooo
as a fellow guard who loves to score in the post, Jalen Brunson became my fav player when he was in Dallas. I was SHOCKED they let him go
Perfect timing Brunson just smoked 🚬 the Celtics in their house 😂
Yep!
@@bballbreakdownhey coach Nick what about the Knicks defense? Is it good or what? 😁
Great Job Coach
There's the Sistine Chapel. And then there's Jalen Brunson's footwork and the speed with which he makes decisions in the paint to give himself a chance to score. That's something even someone who doesn't really get the sophisticated details of basketball can see - with his mouth open. Nothing gives me more joy than watching him go to work - and hard work it is. No individual payer since I became a fan - '68 - has me shaking my he'd so often that I need a neck brace. The world sucks. Jalen Brunson is an artist who has the chance to create a masterpiece every time down the floor. I wanted 40.
Thank you! Knicks fan, I followed you at our worst, lol
He's become an absolute monster! I'm supporting him and the Knicks in the eastern conference this season! Really happy for him!
Great video !
Coach KNick! 🔥🙌
That was a beautiful Segway for your sponsor 👏🏾
Love this kid you never ceases to amaze me
I remember watching him in dallas when he got drafted, second round and with luca in front of him and I was always shocked with how good the little man was for a second rounder, doing a lot of the same stuff luca was doing...
Hi Coach Nick, thanks for showing Brunson's "post up / inside " game where his strength, quickness, touch , footwork and lower center of gravity are masterfully put together ! Looks are deceiving but results are in your face ! ha ha
NYK4Ever Love it coach Nick!
Had to read this twice 😂😂
He's like Mark Jackson or Gary Payton with Olajuwon and Garnett moves. Josh Hart and Archie used to play like this at Villanova as well just not as physical.
Jay Wright's Villanova was a factory for mastery footwork.
He is literally baby Luka
@MemesOfProduction69 im a knicks fan and thats my exact thought. I watched mavs game and would be like luka has the most beautiful footwork ive ever seen. Its like hes playing in slow motion and the defense slows down to try to catch up. I watched jalen play and im like that footwork looks so beautiful but it looks familiar
ahh finally coach nick doing a knicks vid.
JB FOR MAYOR
That boy nice he’s carrying the knicks.
oh he's definitely carrying
Buddy crafty and has great feel for the game, Back in the day play style with a modern day twist
I remember seeing him doing an interview and on court demos of post footwork before the 2018 draft. Very interesting stuff and it’s something he did a lot of in college. It makes you wonder why he fell so far into the 2nd round.
Hes short. They didn't believe in him only because of his height. Then get got drafted to mavs and didn't get the looks because luka is 1st option
His game is so advanced and complete. I’m not necessarily comparing him to Kyrie but other than Kyrie I’ve never seen a point guard with that game
Kareem abdul jabbar? He a PG. One of the great
Agreed. Him and Kyrie are the best at getting their own bucket but i think Brunson might be better in todays league
@@yurimargarin11Stop lol
One of my favorite players today. He's like a mini Luka
Brunson is not like Luka
not a shot chucker like luka
@@schlhq he is so very clearly just like Luka. He plays like Luka but 6in shorter.
@@Killerqueen2000??
Never thought I’d get to see this vid 🥲
Brunson is a player who has great fundamentals. again and again, players who have that are very successful. it may not be as flashy for some people (it is for me though) nobody can negate effects of players like Brunson, Luka and TheBigFundamental Duncan. While Duncan is in HOF, Luka probably is already in it if he stops playing today, if Brunson continues this trajectory in the future he will be in as well.
Coaches of young players should take notice of that.
What Mavs were thinking when they let him go is beyond me...
Hi Coach, been waiting for this reason and actual reason to watch the Knicks for a long time. It looks like they finally got something going here. I still feel they are one high quality player short from being a real contender. If they can get KD for a reasonable price, it has to be considered. It takes about 2 1/2 all-stars to win a ring imo.
In my 40s and using Brunson's moves. Post game was neglected as a guard. Love him
Fuck yes coach! Brunson has been nothing short but sensational. Think Jalen is going to be a player people look back at when we talk about short guards and footwork.
Andre miller and Baron used to do this. Imagine Brunson does and is left handed and also can shoot the three off the dribble.
Anthony Edwards has been adding this to his game. I don't think his moves are as clean and as varied as Brunson yet, but he's working on it. Definitely likes the fadeaway.
adding an extra step to his game lmao. Dude is MJ if MJ was allowed to take another step after establishing Pivot foot. There's no beauty in Travelling...
Best free agent signing ever 👍🏼👍🏾👍🏼👍🏾👍🏼 I saw him snapping for the Mavs that one post season but I never thought he was this good my goodness!
thanks
This is how you play on 2k when you’re speed and speed w/ ball are low but you have the giant slayer badge
That thing he does with his right arm reminds me of what i do in football its called an ice pice i trap the o lineman's hip causing that leg to freeze up and gives me a lane to the quarterback
Ice pick mb idk why it auto corrected
Brunson always been nice in the post so nice to see in todays NBA. Truly an elite player
Every game is a Jalen Brunson legacy game at this point. His scoring and IQ are both so good and even for a small guard his defense is solid. He can take a charge and he's completely unstoppable. I'm not even a knicks fan but I really want to see him lead the Knicks to a championship. Jalen Brunson is him and nobody stands a chance against him.
Im so glad to see jalen brunson get the credit he deserves. Hes the greatest new york has ever seen, and he came from stevenson
Brunson may not have the dribble combos of a Kyrie or curry but he’s herky jerky dribble style is lowkey harder to guard 1 on 1
U really need someone strong enough to able to absorb contact frim him but also wuick enough to keep him in front. But u also need someone disciplined to stay patient through those step thrus.
This guy is a unique point guard talent
When you going to do a video on OKC and the Thunder, Coach?
I hate when my Kings play this guy. He is so good!!!
This has always been part of my game ever since losing my quickness.
He reminds me a lot of tony Parker. Or a smaller, craftier jimmy Butler. I have high hopes for this knicks team and wouldnt be surprised if they make it to the conference finals. That might require beating philly and Milwaukee but i feel that is possible.
His footwork in the post is unique for a guard. He reminds me of Hakeem with some of his post moves.
That Boston Beatdown tonight
I’m happy he playing for nyc
Coach Jay Wright made all his players do pure footwork drills during practice. Brunson quoted him that he said “you might not incorporate foot work into your game but it’s an important skill to have at your disposal” Brunson based his game around what he learned
DAT BOY GOOD
he aight!
Guard post ups will reintroduce big paint isolations
Out of college he was my favourite player, honestly couldn't believe he fell to the 2nd round. The NBA puts to much hope in 1 and dones instead of quality ready players like Brunson
At some point from 14-16 I had a mad step through game. Somehow I lost it and getting it back is hard. It requires repetition in practice. Thats probably it. I probably stopped practicing it in downtime.
Always got made respect for Hakeem and Brunson for that footwork.
reminds me of when you advocated for harden to post up more in houston!
Let GO NICKS AND LET go J.B and O.G.
Brunson out here playing rec ball with the Youngblood 😂😂😂😂
It's impossible to guard someone that can be lefty or righty faster than the speed of thought. It takes a decade to be good enough to master it under the lights and whistle.
Brunson Bangs the paint
It’s a mentality with the post up step through isos
Guy's a magician.
So interesting to see how many of those moves are similar to what Luka does.
I definitely think he picked up a few of those step through moves in Dallas 💯 while Luka is better at decelerating, I think Brunson is quicker to accelerate which allows him to put up those quick release floaters Coach Nick showed
How does he compare to Tony Parker and Ja when it comes to in-the-paint lil man hook shots and step-throughs?
Can't help but imagine him and Luka working on their footwork together
One of the best paint scorers in the NBA.
Leadership, footwork, iQ and angles = Jalen Brunson
brunson is exactly what the knicks needed
My favorite players to watch Brunson, sengun, and kyrie
him and kai's bags so deep
the one at 7:45 is amazing
Caught KCP so bad with the fake first, then the spin, then step thru it was over
"When is the league gonna catch up? Pretty soon."
Maybe. Maybe not.
Jalen reads and reacts to his opponent's moves. He has a counter for any situation, or at least that's what I see.
It's a good analysis on his post game though, I thought Jrue Holiday has been doing some of that. Whether Brunson can keep this up in the playoffs when teams scheme on it & put pressure on him on the defensive end remains to be seen.
This guy is the definition of a knicks player. When they signed him I was the first to say that he was overpayed and that he will do nothing as always with knicks' "big" signing and oh dear i was wrong. He is the best player on the team since his signing (even though somehow before this year only randle was an all star) but he is also their soul and heart. He gives his all during the playoff he is tough ,he is incredibly skilled and crafty he just made me fell in love with the player. He is the kind of player that you know everything will be good as long as he's on the team.
~A Knicks fan whose hopes were brought back by Brunson
His style is very similar to Luka (he is smaller but faster though). He even dominates the ball more this season too.
Yessirr
A shame for the injuries on the Knicks, I thought they would be conference finals lock and could maybe upset Boston. With Randle out it's gonna be very hard
What does the NBA rule book say about shoulder checking the defender with all your weight over and over? I see Giannis doing it too and wondering how this is legal? If a defender started shoulder bashing the dribbler it would be a flagrant. If I tried this in a pickup game I would be fist fighting people every weekend. It’s odd that this is allowed.
He learned a lot of these post moves from Luka in his time in Dallas!
I know this might sound crazy, but imagine a backcourt that featured Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson. Two young stars both entering their primes and playing off each other really well. I reckon if you had them on the same team at any point, you really wouldn’t want to let one of them go because you didn’t want to pay one of them… I reckon that’d be a big mistake, it’s just a good thing no one has made that mistake before…
JB is a wonderful revelation for the Knicks and it's fun to watch him play the right way
The Villanova Knicks!!!!
Nba teams should watch these videos during their scouting report
Posting up? Midrange? In the nba?
His shot makes so much sense
Always good but this one was exceptional.
Thx! I’m definitely proud of it
As a Mavs fan, I'm still mad about our front office letting this guy go. But at least he has an opportunity to be the star of his own team now.
You are no mavs fan you just talk for the sake of talking. We are doing just fine without him. Top 3 team in the league after the trades
@@happypill6195those aren’t mutually exclusive… there’s no question Donnie and Cuban royally fucked that situation. Brunson was willing to sign the 5/$55M extension twice and the Mavs said “we’ll see” then tried offering it immediately after the trade deadline passed (ie they were absolutely trying to flip him for a “superstar” and got no takers) to which he rightfully said nah. Idk if Brunson becomes THIS good-or gets the chance to demonstrate it-playing 2nd to Luka but letting him walk for literally nothing in return when you could’ve locked him up through 2026 at $11M/year? That’s one of Cuban/Donnie’s worst screw ups ever. At that money you still could’ve gotten a Kyrie or another max guy AND had Brunson on the best value contract in the entire league.
Just because it seems to have worked out well for both sides doesn’t mean the Mavs didn’t fuck up. And we still don’t know if there will be future consequences that’ll be traced directly back to that decision. You’ve already had to spend your entire decade’s draft capital to in part overcome letting Jalen walk just to finally put some pieces around Luka. That’s a massive sunk cost. Now god forbid Luka doesn’t sign his supermax or sours on DAL-Kyrie will be gone, you’d instantly be a bottom 5 team or worse who has to give away unprotected lottery picks through 2030. I’ve just painted the apocalyptic scenario, but I bet you’d feel differently if it occurs knowing you could’ve at least still had Brunson if every Mavs fans worst nightmare does become reality.
@@dsmith2420 bruv i m not gonna read all that lmao. We got Kyrie who in a playoff situatio is a much better player. You will see brunson exit in first round and you will see us going to the WCF
@@happypill6195 100% nobody can dispute that. Doesn’t mean failing to lock him up for $11M/yr through 2026 wasn’t still a bad mistake. You’re still going after a Kyrie type #2 with Brunson at that value. And he very well may lose round 1 facing a 7-seed PHI or MIA is brutal.
@@dsmith2420 i dont think we would get kyrie if we resigned brunson
