      @@DaleNorris This is gonna be a long response as I have quite a few thoughts and opinions, but hopefully this helps a bit.
      If you have specific questions shoot em my way and I’ll try and help.
      I went in to possibly purchase a D15M and actually ended up trying the J45 side by side with the D20.
      First off, there is a $1000 price difference, but either way I prefer and would have walked out with the D20 and fortunately I did.
      Of course the D20 is all mahogany vs the Sitka spruce top of the J45. It’s definitely not an apples to apples comparison
      Also, important to note that the j45 standard comes with electronics and the d20 does not. BTW, I think the J45 sounded lovely plugged in.
      Unplugged, I found the D20 to have a richer, deeper & woodier tone (inherent with a higher end all solid mahogany guitar) without being too boomy. I found the d20 to be extremely well balanced as was the j45.
      Again I prefer the woodier, deeper sound of a mahogany top to a spruce top so feel free to keep that in mind when reading this comparison.
      Also, at this level I feel like every company has a unique sound that seems to define their guitars. So, in terms of comparing them, it really comes down to preference, application and how specific or general you wanna be.
      While we’re on the subject of spruce tops, with mahogany back and sides, I used to own a D18GE (Adirondack spruce top) and prefer the D20 to that as well, but again I seem to be an all mahogany guy.
      Not sure if i answered any of the questions that you have in your mind, but here’s a bit more that might be helpful:
      1) is there a difference between the j45 & d20? most definitely.
      2) do I think the d20 is a Better value for the money? Most definitely
      3) do I think it makes sense to own a d20 & a j45? Sure if you like Dreadnoughts, want varying top woods, and want the variety of the different brands and the tones that are inherent with those brands, woods and their build process.
      4) Would I get both for my studio? nope, not at this point. I currently prefer the sound of the all mahogany d20 Guild Dreadnought over others and it gives me a ton of beautiful tones to work with in the studio.
      When the time comes to add another solid acoustic, I will likely add a smaller body with different woods or at the very least a different top wood to give myself more sonic colors and tones to work with.
      But at this point compared to the J-45 & D-18 GE (both different spruce tops), I thought the D20 (mahogany top) was an all around better value and I prefer the tone, especially for my applications.
      Hopefully this helped answer some of the questions you might of had between the two guitars.
      If you have any specific questions, feel free to get back. ✌️

      @@konstantinalexander3804 People are trained to prefer certain tones. A lot has to do with artists they like. Unfortunately, this can also become a rut.
      Guilds are traditionally associated with folk music. But I also think a lot of country artists feel like they can't get on stage without a Gibson. Bluegrass? Gotta have a Martin. So the thinking goes.
      I have had Martins. They are great. I had one underwhelming Gibson sad to say. This D20 reaches beyond my Guild expectations. It has a deeper bass than on any other Guild I have played. Yet is still retains that folky midrange emphasis Guild has always had. That works really well with all mahogany (or on the spruce/mahogany D40 as well). This guitar is lighter than any Guild I have played. The finish is exceptionally light as well. Resonation blues!
      So unless someone feels like you have to be stuck in a sonic rut and impress your friends with a headstock logo, give this guitar a serious listen. The J-45 is great. But short scaled and sweet. Different tone altogether. It will fit in a place the J-45 can't go (and vice versa as well). Like a Martin D15 it will only get better in time. But I am in love with the woodiness of my D-20 and will never give it up.

    I love my D20 not only for the warm rich deep tone but the playability. I am in my 60's and my hands,wrist and large fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be.I have had some awesome sounding Martins,love 'em but the neck profiles are not suitable for old stiff aching hands and fingers.I currently have a 1980 Martin D41,a 1973 Gibson Southern Jumbo, a 1964 Epiphone Ft 45 Cortez and the Guild D20 antique burst. It's like comparing apples to oranges I know but the D20 has the best playability and is what I grab when I am alone just to play. Each of my guitars have their own individual sound but my hands prefer the the d20 relaxed feeling in my hands.

  • @bobaldo2339
    @bobaldo2339 Před 7 lety +2

    My new D20 came with EXP16 coated strings (light gauge). Surprisingly, they seem to provide more bass than a set of (heavier) MartinSP "medium/light" strings - which I tried on it. This guitar is also surprisingly loud. It is louder than my Martin DRS2, for instance.
    The neck (C shape) feels pretty comfortable to me (I have large hands but fairly short fingers). It is certainly more comfortable for me over-all than a Martin "modified low oval" neck profile.
    Oddly, the light finish on the guitar is continuing to out-gas quite noticeably, by the way. The guitar comes with the typical smallish frets that you would find on most acoustic guitars these days (not my favorite sort of frets; but "whatcha gonna do?").

      Thanks for your synopsis on the model Bob!!! It's always great to hear other players experiences with the instrument :-) I too noticed it's stronger volume as compared to the DRS2... the DRS2 seems much more mellow than the Guild D20

    • @bobaldo2339
      @bobaldo2339 Před 7 lety +1

      You are right about the DRS2 being more mellow than the Guild. The Guild , however is much more "open" than the DRS2 - which is a bit anemic volume-wise for a Martin dreadnaught. On another issue, I believe the Guild's outgassing odor comes from the hard shell case, probably a glue used in constructing it (just a guess). Anyway, the case fairly reeks with a very pungent annoying odor. I have never experienced this problem with any other case (and I have many guitars in hard shell cases).
      This is one problem Guild should really eliminate in the future.

      I finally tried the strings I should have tried in the first place on this guitar: regular un-coated medium gauge phosphor bronze (Martin SP).
      That is exactly the right strings for this guitar. It now sounds like a million bucks! Wow!

    no difference between Mohog and Sapelle tone woods. Even the prices are similar. Took my DRS1 to my bluegrass clubs monthly jam session. DRS1 held it's
    own (IMHO) against solid rosewoods and mohogany. Even better than a Collings D1 ($4,000 higher BTW) But I admit Collings guy doesn't bear down.
