In this video, we have a sit-down conversation with a fellow Fil-Am hailing from Las Vegas, Corin Lujan. I had the chance to briefly interview Corin during her vacation in the Philippines as she shares about her thoughts on the pitfalls of living in the U.S, Filipino-Americans leaving seeking a new life back in the homeland, and her personal life as a realtor and journalist. Enjoy!

My husband is looking forward to rediscovering his roots. He left Philippines at 6yr old. I'm Mexican American and our daughter loved Philippines when we visited last yr. The joy they radiated warmed my heart...and that is why we are moving ❤ I agree Americans are materialistic. I feel like I need to pay ~$200/mo for my daughter to have friends(classes, play dates) where in Philippines she met friends everywhere and played ALL DAY! I can't wait for our new life and learn more about my husbands and daughters culture ❤

We have been rediscovering our roots even though were not born in the Philippines. I first visited the PH when I was 10 years old also. It was also difficult, culture shock. I look back at that time now and I'm glad to have had the seed of the Philippine culture planted within me because over the 40 years since, we've gone back to visit 3 times! We look forward to visiting with our young adult children to share the culture and ancestral roots of their Philippine heritage. Honoring and caring for family are virtues that need to be nurtured and lived so that we become better versions of ourselves and promote a society that cares for one another in charity aand love. ❤

She’s 100% right that life in the PI is totally different compared to the US specially when you’re retired. I was born there and my dream is to spend the remaining years of my life in the PI. Retiring here is not fun specially if you’re alone and I consider the US as one of the most expensive country to live. Who can afford a house or an apartment if you’re just an average worker. Everything is expensive nowadays. That American dream is gone that’s why we’re lucky that we can still come home and spend a quality time with friends and relatives there. Four years from now, I intend to go home and enjoy the remaining chapter of my life in the PI.

My late Filipina wife and I retired to the Philippines in 2016 after 41 years in the States. She was from Isabella, and I was from northern Indiana. We married in 1976 in the Philippines and planned our retirement for the last twenty years of our careers. In our last twenty years, we lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, put our six children through school there, and watched our grandchildren start their lives there. I still live in the Philippines and love it very much. It's the culture and the people that make it so warm and welcoming here. I recently remarried a younger Filipina who worked for me as my caregiver. I was so surprised that she cared for me and did everything my late wife would do. Even the way she cooked my favorite dishes. I feel that God has blessed me and given me a special time with another beautiful Filipina in my life.

Good video Evan! As a half-Filipino myself, I plan on exploring my roots in retirement and more importantly contributing back to the country which is responsible for my being here. The weight of history goes back through my mother's family in the PI and resulted in me and my accomplishments. Listening to your interview, I'm struck by how frenetic she is given her ancestry. You can see the effect of her time in the USA and I'm sure she would go through a decompression phase in the Philippines. I look forward to future videos!
Quick update - your interviewee mentioned the weight of obligation to one's family (the Social Contract), but she did not really give you the reasons for why it differs so greatly in the US compared to the PI. In the end, it becomes a question of resources. Families are smaller in the US (lower cost of resources); family members all need to work, especially if they in lower paying professions (heck, even higher paying professions require both parents to work); every resource in the US is multiple orders of magnitude more expensive than in the PI. It's not that families don't want to take care of their parents...it's that they can't do it. They lack both the resources and the necessary skillset to take care of them. As you might guess, this results in a fair amount of guilt, especially if those family members came from a country like the Philippines.

There's pros and cons in living in either the USA or the Philippines.
Each and every person differ in their experiences depending on their perceived reality, perceived experiences, finances and budget, a sense of belonging, being accepted, and a family and friends network. I was born in the Philippines and came to the United States as an 11 year old. I'm 51 now and feel blessed to be here in the US with my mom (dad deceased) and brothers. I think each person has different points of view and experiences as well as expectations of what is considered happiness, success, and contentment. I feel grateful for having four seasons, and being given the opportunity, through hard work and education, to own a home here in the US. Family unity and closeness are also personal and differ from family to family. Generalizations shouldn't be made about Filipinos living in the US versus Filipinos living in the Philippines.
I want to note that not everyone in the US is materialistic and lonely. Respectfully, each person brings to their reality values that are important to them.

US or Philippines is not for everybody.

Aloha Evan, I enjoyed watching your vlogs. We live here Oahu, Hawaii, my husband and I are planning to retire back to the Philippines. I agree with Ms./Ma'am Corin about living here in the USA. I was born and raised(until I was 14-years-old) in Baguio City, immigrated to the US(California) in 1982, my husband was born and raised(until he was 11-years-old), immigrated to the US(California) in 1977, We met in High School & got married when he joined the Navy, had two sons, moved around US(from San Diego & Chicago), then we got stationed in Guam(first overseas station), then we were going to move back to California but my husband wanted us to stay here in Hawaii, then he retired from the Navy after 20 years of service( he still working right now with a great company (based in Connecticut). We are now in our mid fifties, both of our kids are married, had kids and live in (our first son )Maryland(he's in the AirForce stationed in Andrews AFB), has a daughter and our second son, lives with his family in Las Vegas, NV and has 2 kids of his own. So, both of us are "feeling very tired" of working and want to retire back to the Philippines. We've been thinking and researching alot of places to stay in Manila area, Cavite and Laguna, considering many options and a short period of time. We''re thinking of renting first before we buy a house/lot(preferably in Cavite or Laguna). Anyway, for now we're are in the "planning stage" and will continue to do alot of research(we really wanted to go back to our homeland and "relax"). Thank you Evan for this vlog and to Ms Corin for her share and experiences. Take care and stay safe always.

But I just checked prices on a little tiny 5 x10 storage space the other day in San Diego and some of storage spaces cost as much or more as a furnished studio apartment in the Philippines. In some some big cities like that in the US you can make a hundred grand a year and be considered broke

Very true taking care of our old people is much better in the Philippines than in the States. When my mother was unable to take care of herself, I hired a 24 hour caretaker and she took care of my mother till she died. It was a one to one care and cheap at that. I was very happy with the care she had. The States is very good for the young but when you grow old and unable to drive then life in the USA gets difficult. For one thing everything is so commercialized in the States. Americans have no patience for slow old people and that is understandable because the workers are required to do other things. Americans are wired to keep moving but when you are old and your bones are crackly , you can't be as snappy as you used to, you get very frustrated with the young ones who rush you.

Bottom line is that we all have our own personal reasons why we prefer one country over another. I will be retiring in the Philippines next year but respect each individual's decision to settle wherever he or she wish to and for whatever reasons. I watched a lot of vlogs about the Philippines as I love the Philipinos hospitality. One thing that touched me in your interview is the sandwich that my generation are face with today. I am 54 years old now and I think even in our small Island state we are the last generation that will take care of our parents, for those that still around. My parents are resting in peace since many years ago. I remembered when I started work, I will give half ofy salary to my mother. We all simblings contributed to her wellbeing when she retired. We take care of my mother until death. My dad passed young so he was a different. Today both my child are working living their own life. Not one of them have ever give me a cents or care to visit me regularly. I am not in perfect health conditions and on invalidity pension early. That is that sad part of it even I have gave them both my heritage land given to me by my father to keep the family property instead of selling it. I came to the USA when i was 22 years old, i stayed there for over 40 years and im 64 years old now. I always vision my self coming back home, this happen 2021 and never look back. Philippines is not for everybody as well as USA, especially if you are aging like me. For me, i feel that USA is totally a different country when i first moved there. I remember buying my first car for $6000 dollars, brand new, you will never get a decent brand new car for that price now a days. Gasoline price is 99 cents a gallon, crimes are not prevalent like today. The first work related shooting i remembered was in the Post Office. He got fired and came back and shoot his suprvisor and coworkers, and the rest is hiatory. It became a copy cat.
We were paying $2800.00 dollars for a 2 bebroom apartment plus utilities. We are literally living paycheck to paycheck and sometimes using our credit card just to survived till the next pay.
Also, one of the main reasons that i move back is the discrimination that i felt it still exists. We, as a brown color will always be discriminated more often than other skin color.

After the pandemic, Prices of the basic needs had gone up. Although I am earning enough before and I’m able to save some for my retirement money, now my income is now enough for my expenses and hard for me to pay all my bills without resourcing from my savings because my income is not enough anymore. I am basically just working everyday and nothing to do other than going to work, no time to go places to spend time with friends here plus it’s gonna cost you a lot of money to go places. I have been watching the savy expat for a bit and I do agree for most of the content he has made. For me coming from the Philippines and becoming an immigrant of America, there is just that one thing that makes Filipino leave manila or any part of the country. Locals are severely underpaid. If the issue in the states is paying bills, the issue for a true local is actually having the means to pay for it. Yes HMO is usually better than having to pay co pay and insurance in the states because it is offered by the employer. This is the minimum wage is 500 php lets say that's an equivalent of 80 USD here in Texas on a daily, it just evens it out. The beauty of being an Expat is you can still keep your citizenship even if you don't live America, just pay your taxes and applying for dual citizenship is not hard. Having a US salary already bridges the gap of living paycheck to paycheck because of the exchange rate. You will definitely get a bang for your buck. But for the true local that's the hardest thing to accomplish getting that US salary.

On the supply side builders cannot build fast enough or they get buried in red tape losses. The American dream still has 50 states and dozens of friendly countries to choose from. I am looking at Thailand for cheaper housing and Philippines for the language barrier. Utang na loob is easy when its spread out among 10 kids but Americans only have 1-2 kids. I listened to all the factors you guys discussed in the VLOG; and I heard you; I guess it is a matter of lifestyle preference that you guys want to have in your retirement years; TRUE the US is expensive and depending on the lifestyle you guys had prior to retirement ; this would greatly determine your area of preference be it in US or the Philippines ; BIG winners for me for the Philippines is the food; the cost of living and people that you surround yourself with; I know there will be lots of family around ; but as to everything there will be pluses and minuses ; at this time; the BIG(++) to stay in the US is prevalent for our family; but you never know what it will be in the next few years; THE BIGGEST (- -) for me is the political landscape in the PHILPPINES which I feel is not conducive to safety and security and the HEALTHCARE system would also be a MAJOR factor once you retire to insure one could maintain a healthy lifestyle on your retirement; there are ONLY a handful of really reputable hospitals with adequate modern equipment to give you the assurance of excellent healthcare. We might re-examine our priorities in several years but for NOW it is still NORTH AMERICA FOR US !!

$5,500/mo in LA or San Fran (I lived in San Fran and LA many years, still have houses in both cities), is not enough and you will deal with high crime, homelessness, woke mentality, anti-Asian hate, discrimination, lack of law enforcement, defunded police, stupid DA policies, they favor the criminals rather than the law-abiding citizens, they are SANCTUARY cities for illegals, etc etc etc ...
