I tend to look at it from the customers point of view. It is now working and you have a plausible explanation for it in resetting the BCM. I would be telling her that she now needs to monitor the problem and let her know a BCM replacement is likely if it reoccurs. Great video and I liked following your logic with the wiring diagrams. thanks for all you do for the industry.

Gatta love when modules glitch out or freeze up then it locks itself until rebooted (pulling the fuse). I hate stuff like that LOL! I think finding the root cause of the module glitching out or freezing (whatever it's actually doing) is gonna be pretty hard on this one, maybe nearly impossible depending what it is. I'll tell you this though, when you spent almost half the video trying to find direction by looking at the diagrams and getting familiar with the system, that's where I learned the most information! I don't know anything about CAN systems or how they work, so it was awesome to learn what you did while trying to find direction! Thank you for another awesome video Danner! =]

Thank you Danners. Good job. Did anybody else notice the color non-OE wiring diagram information bus wiring drawn wrong at the DLC? I just looked at the OE data link wiring and it is also labeled wrong. They must have labeled the diagram and connector view as mirror image or from wire side of DLC connector. This would confuse anybody that didn't know any better. You, the viewers, can identify this by knowing and committing to memory the standard layout of the DLC. Terminals 4 and 5 are ground. Terminal 16 is B+. Terminal 6 is CAN H and 14 is CAN L.

Hey Paul! Big ups to you. You're really an inspiration. I must say, you don't have to know what everything means, as regards to the IPS thing. I mean you work on almost all manufacturers, it's pretty impossible to know what everything on all manufacturers stands for. For others reading, I'm not trying to support mediocrity, but hey, for someone who works on all brands, what you know about these things is really awesome. I personally have learned a lot from you work. Look forward to learning so much more.

My guess just shooting from the hip; static electricity. We all know everythings suppose to be grounded but we also know regardless how well engineered a car may be, static electricity will cause these modern systems to act up. So, was R&R the fuse the same as removing the batrery cables, and even touching battery cable ends together to empty the capacitors; removing the static electicity from the harness. Plug it back up and presto chango, it all works now. Its happened to us all before and it will happen again. Main thing is mechanic/shop integrity to be honest and keep your customer in the loop. Good video; 2thumbs up

Charlie a former software designer here (retired). Any module with a memory keep fuse may have a condition in it for which it was not anticipated. Example. Key on to Key off with hazard lights button pressed at same time. Sets a memory bit in the BCM memory. Now when BCM boots, it gets stupid. Pablo pulls the Room fuse and that bit goes to off. Now it booots and no problemo. I did similar deal with wifey's very expensive sewing machine. Feed dogs didnt come up. It thought it was in free motion mode(dogs down all the time). So I told it to got to greem motion then not. Works. Had to sew in between state changes. Stupid programmer. Not stupid module. Ship it as Eric O would say. I held back on dogs ref and not refer to the enemy Browns. And yes I was screaminf back porbe the BCM powers and grounds!

I agree... I believe it was a bit corrupted in the BCMs memory from who nows what and it probably won't return in all of the car's life... A software routine within the BCM to power up those power feeds read the bad bit and turned off those outputs... Nothing within your power or diagnosis will make it reoccure. It happens often within computer controlled modules... Don't be hard on yourself... And count it as a cure... Dave

The memory room fuse reminds me of a bios battery in desktop pc motherboard which stores recent settings of the bios firmware. When the pc crashes and restarts then all of a sudden it loads to the black screen and stops loading the operating system and you’re locked out.
In a similar way, the bcm may have crashed and was probably only loading the last known settings from memory until you pulled the memory fuse and reset the memory chip therefore defaulted it to factory settings. (My theory).
You’re a legend in this game. Keep it up 👍
I think all us techs will be studying IT to fix cars soon! Damn computers! 🇬🇧

Don't beat yourself over it, the video still teaches important steps to follow in any diagnosis : verifying complaint, system operation, learning how to read a wiring diagram, learning why there's no " NO COM " faults in the other modules, identyfing component and location, checking power and grounds...if all present, replacing and programming the faulty component(I might add...). Many BMWs had a problem with their FRM modules(which is essentially how BMW calls their BCM),where the FRM would stop communicating and all the components controlled by the FRM would stop working after a simple regular modules scan using a BMW factory computer. And the " fix " was to disconnect the negative cable of the battery and most times it would come back to life. But many times it didn't and you had to replace the FRM.

Love how you left in Caleb asking the questions, like your final thoughts for example. And you and Danner joking around in the beginning - it's like icing ... on the best cake ever, lol. 👍😊 Never once in HUNDREDS of videos you've made did I ever think just ONE was bad. They're all gold!!
Oh man, I'll tell ya - it's cars like this that make me lose my mind and want to continue fixing lawn equipment. Half the time I can't tell if it's my lack of skills here, or just getting myself worked up for nothing ... or the car screwing with me, exactly like this one did! I wish I had learned OBD-II at a younger age - I'd probably be a lot better at it. Caleb will be great at this! He'll have a solid foundation early on that will stick with him forever. I just can't let go of how enjoyable it was for me to get an old school carbureted, HEI, or points car in with some problem, and fix it, or at the very least, diagnose it, with not a single manual in front of me, nor with any internet available, in a half hour - sometimes more, alot of the time less. I'm just not as good with the electronics - it just doesn't stick in the ol' brain like things used to. Just venting I guess. I wouldn't have ever even tried if it weren't for you, though - just want you to know that! It's me, not you .... Boy, that didn't sound real good, did it ... HAHAHAHA! 🤣 I hate modern cars, Paul!! But, I'm stubborn, and I'll keep battling with them until they either completely kick my ass, or I finally win every battle. Something tells me I'm going to end up somewhere in between. 😉

Unhooking then battery for 15 minutes then hooking it back up, doing a “master reset” so to speak.

I have an 04 Hyundai tiburon (Hyundai and KIA are basically the same company) and one day when I was driving on the highway the engine acted like I switched off the ignition for about 1/10th of a second and came right back on. no engine light, readiness was set, cruise was still set, everything was working, but the radiator fans were stuck on whenever the ignition was on. didn't matter if the engine was warm or cold, if it was off for an hour or a day, if the ignition was on the fans were on.
What ended up fixing it was disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, and it hasn't acted up since (happened about 8 months ago). No idea what happened, but I had that feeling of: well I sure hope that wasn't a sign of things to come.

The Kia room lamp fault, that’s the second time I’ve seen this in the past week. No remotes key fobs working the door locks, power door lock on the drivers master door switch only worked when key was on first position accessory. No chime from key in and no key detect showing in live data on the scan tool and No interior lamp working.Followed the wiring in the etacs system to find key reminder circuit and voila! It shows the key reminder circuit was fed by the 10amp fuse for the room ( interior ) lamp circuit! You would think that the wiring diagram for ignition barrel would show the key detect wiring as well, but no, the good old Koreans put it out of sight in the ETACS section.
Another one that I’ve had was park neutral switch not allowing the gear lever to be shifted from Park position due to a bad ground from the BCM to the switch on the micro switch at the gear lever Paul, you need to lift out the centre console to gain access to it! I’ve seen so many bad Kia electrical faults in really new cars, not just the old ones!
    Every days a new lesson!

Like someone else said, it was very likely a software issue. The software may have gotten corrupted and caused the glitch. Resetting the bcm cleared the software corruption issue. I've seen that happen. It also happens all the time with desktop and laptop computers. A reboot usually clears the issue. As has been pointed out, check for tsbs/recalls. Should check what is hard wired, horn, front wipers, headlight are likely hardwired instead of being controlled by a module.

This is the reason that IT folks generally ask you to reboot your computer, or the cable people ask you to reset your cable box.
The issue with this car is likely an edge-case problem that the programmers didn't imagine, or was too expensive to bother including in the firmware for the BCM.

(split between a student fund at Rosedale Tech and a homeless shelter, Light of Life Rescue Mission in Pittsburgh PA). This month has been slow so far with only about $75 raised. Let's make it more! I think this month I would like to send my missionary friend in Panama a little extra help.

    Il tell you a story...
I'm working as electrician in dealership 0 years of experience...
Toyota yaris 2020, turn the headlights off no key in ignition, they light up, rather than have parking lights only on when key is out,
Push hazard button you hear click from cluster, but no indication on cluster, either on the outside they don't light up,
Experienceded 30 years electrician in dealership says it's fuse box in front,
Guess what I diagnosed it it was bcm,
He decided to charge battery it reset! And worked fine
He changed fuse box, it didn't work 😂😂😂😂
Thansk to your videos knew from start it was bcm

The logic Hyundai /Kia used on that generation and up until the last new model launch (Europe) was the BCM received the signal from the switch then sends actuation request to the Smart Junction Box which uses Intelligent Power Switches (IPS) which are just transistors to limit the current. Once the circuit is activated the Smart Junction Box sends a confirmation signal back to the BCM. The reason your headlights still worked was because they have a back up hard wire set up. They use PWM for the headlights when battery voltage is over 13.5V when it drops they go to a direct circuit must be for safety and I think that's why you still had front wipers.

@35:59 to be fair to those people who advocate pulling fuses to check them, that 0.1% chance does seem to happen an awful lot to you when you film no comm videos 🤣🤣🤣
As to pulling the fuse and replacing it to get it to work again, an almost identical problem was notorious for happening with the OnStar modules on mid 2000’s Chevy Trailblazers and GMC Envoys. The fix on this was to replace the module because while simply pulling and replacing fuse would restore functionality to the system, it would eventually start acting goofy again. Haven’t watched the entire video just yet, so you may have already said this, but if it were me in your spot, I’d tell the customer to keep an eye on it, and if it does this again, they’ll need a new BCM.

With the room fuse being the memory fuse, removing it whilst the ignition is on, engine on will still make the hazard, turn signal and all depending on the room fuse to work will work. The test I would do will be to remove the room fuse, turn engine off, key off, and then turn engine on, key on, and see whether the computer can still retain any memory.

IPS may be Intelligent Power System, or fuse box. If you look at the wiring diagram, it shows the location. Nissan calls it IPDM Intelligent Power Distribution Module which is under the hood, I know, I have an 06 Frontier. Maybe a road test over a rough road would cause the "intermittent" to show itself. Other than that, Nice Diag under the "non cooperation" of the module! Intermittents are like that.

Another reason why in the live debugging line of work on automated computerized systems in buildings, we always say don't reboot anything or pull power unless specifically told by the expert specialists who are qualified to diagnose the problem.
There's a highly likelihood you will be back again to figure out the issue on even worse timing/circumstance than now.

I do not remember many if any come backs on those issues. leaving me to believe cars have become like our phones and computers and play stations as you said requiring a complete module drain system wide and reboot once and a while. maybe could it be?

  • @chrismechanic2000
    @chrismechanic2000 Před 4 lety +4

i think in this case the bcm crashed, i have had this before, you pulled the memory fuse with ign off and it wiped it, now the reason everything still worked with the memory fuse pulled was because you had the ignition on, it wont need a memory supply while its all powered up, i would give the car back at that point and see if it played up again in the future.
good vid anyway, even though with a job like this you will always be second guessing what you did.

Didn't the room fuse being removed turn off the interior lights and when it was replaced @45:32. Could the room fuse be linked to the dome (room maybe?) Lights? Maybe an intermittent short on the dome light circuit causing the bcm to fault and go into some sort of protect mode? Just a few thoughts as I'm watching.

One thing I noticed right away was that the key was in the ignition and the engine running when you pulled the Room fuse and everything started working. Try Engine off, key off, pull the room fuse, wait 10 - 15 seconds for memory to clear, plug fuse back in, key on, engine on. Still works? Disconnect the battery for 60 - 90 seconds and see if the problem reoccurs.

Just a thought to consider, as I work on Class 8 trucks but there could be another cause that I'm not sure you mentioned. That being yes you could have a power issue to the BCM but don't forget were the power comes from. Here is an article from Navistar, -DESCRIPTION
Low battery voltage is the only known cause for BC lock up. This condition will occur if the trucks battery voltage is in the 5.0-5.5 voltage range. This is an indication of bad or damaged batteries. Ensure that each battery can effectively sustain a charge of 12.5 Volts or higher. The way to tell that a trucks body controller has locked up is to check if the dome light, headlights, fuel gauge and voltage gauge are functioning. If ALL of these are not functioning the body controller has locked up and will need to be reset. To reset the body controller, power to the module will have to be cycled. The easiest way to cycle body controller power is to disconnect the batteries for a short period of time. Body controller power can also be cycled by removing the driver side kick panel and disconnecting the power feed to the body controller.

I've replaced several for all sorts of problems, but haven't replaced any when the B/C is locked up. Resetting it I believe was the correct thing to do, asking if they had to be jump started or anything would be something else to ask.

Thanks for the "real life" scenario. I'm a fairly big and old guy and the contorsioning that goes with " working " under the dash, just drives me crazy. Patience is lost and plastic clips just get busted and now I have to figure out how to mend broken panels. I wish the factory would realize that vehicles break down and someone with joints of limited range of motion has to get the repairs done. Maybe the panels attaching methods could get a little more predictable. How much would a shop charge for something like you showed in the video? Poor engineering and someone has to eventually pay for the day it needs repair. Hello actual cost of ownership. Better design and accessibility for repair should be just as much important as " sexy" ( whatever that might be) looking vehicles. I understand that leasing clients don't care, for about three year, just make the damn thing work and is not the lessee's problem.
    Thank for the great video
