  • Plugged Up Combine and Wildlife!!! Montana Wheat Harvest 2021
In today's video, I take you on the combine with me harvesting wheat on our Montana farm. The wheat is pretty moist and we have to go really slow. Uncle Chris has to stop and unplug his combine. I see hawks and the cutest little bunny rabbit. I think I see three bunnies but Dad thinks I see the same one three times! LOL I have to harvest through the coulee, which means I have to line my combine up to the wheat swath across the coulee first. The swather guy swathed our field and the neighbor's field together and that presents its own problems figuring out where to run the combine. My Dad leaves a little present for me in one of the wheat swaths!!!! I hope you enjoy my video. Thank you for watching!

    My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Yes, over in the UK rabbits used to be so common that people would use harvest as a sporting opportunity. As long as you were safe and not shooting towards the combine or anything else, you were generally quite OK.
Earlier though, when combines weren't in use wheat was cut into sheaves, and these were stacked in farm yards. A threshing machine used to then tour round all the farms in an area, threshing the grain from the crop at each time. This started off with stationary steam engines (horse drawn) to provide power, then moved on to steam traction engines, and finally early oil-powered tractors were used.
Threshing day was always a bit of an occasion, since when you harvested all the mice and rats that had been out living in the crop generally tended to move inwards towards the farms, and take up temporary residence in the stacks of wheat. The time-honoured practice was for everyone not involved with the actual threshing to turn up with sticks and any local dogs capable of killing rats and trustworthy enough not to attack other livestock. The farm chickens were also let out for the occasion for a very special purpose.
Then the threshing machine would be lined up next to the stack or stacks, so sheaves could be thrown over onto the top of the machine. Feeding a threshing machine was an art, to prevent it jamming or overloading, so that was one man's job; another was there to catch and untie sheaves. Two men on top of the stack to throw sheaves over (generally using pitchforks to do this). At the start, nothing too exciting but as you worked down the stack the wildlife in the stack would get agitated. It was usual to always make sure the bottoms of trousers were firmly tied, to stop rats running up them. This wasn't all that dangerous but the tale tended to get told down the pub forever afterwards. Then rats and mice would start leaving the stack, and generally getting nabbed by dogs, or people with sticks. The hens, previously let out were there mostly on mousing duties; chickens are fairly efficient predators of anything up and including mouse-sized animals, and not too many pests escaped all of this (although the eggs tasted a bit strange for a while afterwards, apparently).
The very first combines were a revelation, and revolutionised harvest over here; you went from very labour-intensive to very efficient indeed.

Hi Kate, with you working so many continuous long days no one will ever be able to think of you or any member of your family of being lazy. With your youthful beauty, your high intelligence and your never ending enthusiasm you're like a pretty pearl amongst a bunch of rough and tough hard working farm hands. How is it possible for you or anyone to spot one of those tiny hawk feathers in a huge pile of straw and wheat? I'm sure you must know that Mr and Mrs Hawk would love to invite one of those cute little bunny rabbits home for supper. Everyone loves your politeness and good manners, they're very refreshing to see in todays world. Love you, Keep up the good work.....

I always looked forward to it at my family’s rice farm in Southeast Texas. I can remember being your age and getting promoted to a combine (7700 John Deere- showing my age) from a Rice Cart. It was a very special time and have many fond memories of working on the family farm. Enjoy every time you’re in the field with family and friends. Those are moments that you will always cherish. Just looked up Billie Lou's obit and it gave me chills. What a wonderful full life she led. And a regular globe trotter with her travels. I'm sure a lot of the viewers might imagine a cloistered life tied to the farm, but she bird watched on the Orinoco river in South America, skied in Switzerland, and had winter getaways with her husband (here known as Grandpa), to Roratonga, Fiji, and Mexico among many others. To paraphrase a popular you tube creator, your Grandma was "a w s o m e".

Kate, you might be able to disconnect the weight sensor in your seat. Discuss it with Dad. As long as you know, I cannot see that it would be a safety issue to allow you the comfort of stretching your leg every now and then.

Yes, Kate, there is a so-called dead man's switch in your seat. If the driver falls off the seat for whatever reason, you want that juge thing to not drive into something. You have that in forklifts and all kinds of heavy machinery. It's an OSHA thing. :)
