This is more of a how-to video than anything, where I have trouble with the auto choke on this Troy Bilt push mower and decide to convert it to a primer bulb setup. It is a pretty easy process, this video shows you how to do it.
To install a primer bulb, you can also use a socket large enough to push the bulb in, minimizing the risk of damaging it. Also, if the air filter gasket isn't sealing properly, you can try using some high temperature JB Weld silicone sealant to glue two air filter gaskets together.
Wait ? New CLEAN CARB AND A SUPER DIRTY BACK PLATE YOU ARE INSTALLING ? Why not do this the correct way and clean the used parts ? Blow the mower off at least with air !
Good Luck
I've had nothing but problems with my 6hp Quantum XTE that is mounted to a Sears pressure washer, always been hard starting even with the improved primer carb, absolutely need the choke on, and need to prime it really well for it to start, once it's running it runs good, but shut it off, better hope it starts again! I replaced the carb, coil, plug, did the updated primer bulb modification seems to help some, but also took the bottom case off to check the cam gear was ok everything is spot on seems like there is an intake leak maybe has a new O ring on the carb base, but thinking it's sucking air from somewhere at low speeds, I've taking the intake manifold off verified no leaks there intake manifold gasket is in place an in good shape.
Good video on explaining how to switch that over to a primer bulb from an auto choke
Thanks John!
It’s a must if you have the parts from other engine
@@philliphall5198 that is true
I went from a primer to auto set up recently. Turned out pretty good.
Want to try that one time!
Heh, heh! Show off!
Great job Ellis👍 I've done this fix a couple times myself. Also on the old quantum's with a choke & throttle.
Thanks Alan, yes this makes them a little more reliable.
This is kind of funny. I, along with a LOT of others are having huge problems with the primer system due to the poor design of the air filter box where it mounts to the carb.
Hope this all works out for you but I was thinking of doing the OPPOSITE of what you are doing!!
That's the biggest issue with the primer, I think I converted this one because it's what I had around the house that worked. Sometimes using 2 or 3 gaskets will get it priming again. Sometimes you have to spray a little carb spray to get it to run a minute and that sometimes helps with the primer after putting it together on the first start.
The primer bulb plate is more trouble than the auto choke system I think
The air fin arm usually has to be filled down a tad for it to move freely
And new thermostat will new gaskets
Easy fix, make sure air arm has the tinny spring #790849
Main failure points of a Briggs and Stratton Quantum auto choke that I've seen:
-Bad or missing throttle and/or air vane spring
-Bad thermostat
-Damaged air vane
-Damaged carburetor butterfly valve linkage.
I think this one had many of these. That's why I went with the primer setup.
I had one that sat for a long time. The vane screw bore and were hopelessly screw bound up and the thermostat did not work after that was fixed.
Great job!!! What's the part # on new carburetor. Thanks!!
For primer bulb carb Briggs 799868 should get you what you need.
@@EllisMowersandmoreThank you sir. Well appreciated!!!
This is my kind of video. Great stuff
Thank you Bruce! Trying to do more of these in the future.
Thanks for the video; been looking for one on this. In my experience, avoid using a screw driver to load the primer bulb as it's too easy to cut the rubber. Best to press it into place using a socket. Thanks again!
Thanks for watching! It's an easy job overall. Yes the socket trick works great putting the bulbs in too.
Wonder why it wouldn't run with auto choke. My quantum 35 runs perfectly with the auto choke. Couldn't be any better.
This may have been a situation where I had a good primer carb and needed it done that day.
Soaking the gaskets helps most of the time and oem gaskets are thicker than Amazon gaskets that you might have to add several
I now check the bowl nut on new aftermarket carbs. I’ve had a couple where some of the metal debris from boring out the pickup holes has remained behind , partially or fully blocking the fuel flow from the bowl. The first one I came across was hard to start and surging like yours was when you first started it. I also had one with the needle disconnected from the float. Frustrating.
This batch of carbs I got seem to have the jet drilled a little smaller than usual. Most others I get are good. Still hard to beat for $10 though.
WHAT KIND OF CARBERATOR DID YOU REPLACE ONTO THE ENGINE - YOU NEVER SHOWED - DID IT HAVE THE SMALL HOLE FOR AIR TO BE BLOWN IN FROM THE PRIMER BULB - KINDA CONFUSING !
Yes, and I had to swap the air box to one that would accommodate a primer bulb as well.
You were missing the Choke Spring
Yes but I didn't have an adequate replacement for the missing spring and even manually throwing the choke open didn't help.
You need clean all parts is perfect time
what was he starting issue the primer didnt seem to help
I think I had a plug that was on the fritz and I had also just washed it which can mess with it.
@@EllisMowersandmore thanks for the update i was wondering
It’s surging like crazy you can’t sell that thing
Would you have been able to use old carb with the primer bulb if cleaned and good to go?
Not compatible. I had a mower with a primer setup come in with an auto choke carb once and it didn't work.
Noticing you didn't replace the air vane, did you install one off camera? Or is one not required?
Not required going to primer set up. The correct springs and armature set up are essential however.
Correct, not required for primer bulb. Still need the governor spring though.
Can this be done the opposite way around.....convert a primer choke to an auto choke or are the block castings different?
Yes you can convert the other way but you have to have an exhaust with the temp vane on it so the auto choke works properly.
Nice one thank you. I have the autochoke version but the engine has let go. Cannot buy anywhere the same engine, but can find a manual choke version. Need autochoke else I'll be changing control cables etc
Thank you for your reply 👍👍
Pretty straight forward, a bit of faffing about but job is done!! Cheers for your help 👍
Great video! any fix for a quantum engine with the prime system in the morning won't start unless spray with carb cleaner?
Sounds like the gasket between the air filter housing and carb isn't sealing which causes the primer bulb to not work. Replace and double up the gasket to see if that fixes it.
@@EllisMowersandmore Thanks for the help so quickly, the primer bulb works fine, i removed the air filter cover and see it pumped up gas at the jet no problem. should the throttle plate be wide open? also this is a new carburetor kit i just put in.
@@robindpan If the carb is working right and only runs on carb spray, I wonder if you have water in the fuel or bad fuel. Another thought is if you have a cracked intake tube or are missing the o ring gasket between the carb and intake. Yes the throttle plate should be wide open. Starts full throttle and then the governor regulates once it fires up.
@@EllisMowersandmore Thanks for your good advices, I will check those areas.
what the heck, why is everybody converting from choke to bulb? I want to convert from bulb to choke. I hate troublesome primer bulb mowers.
Parts - 799868 -Carburetor, 795259 - Air cleaner base
No gas getting to carb cause of vise grips
Can't tell you how many times I've done that!
I just use a socket to push the bulb in.
Another great way to do it.
