seriously I could spend all day in that computer place.. it's like nerd heaven
me too xD
That's what i did
You can even find some "ancient" boards/cards there. They import tons of used parts as electronic waste, and maintain/fix those still functioning. So if you are a collector, it's heaven for sure.
I didn't think of that as far as the collector element. This alone would make the trip worth it.
yeah and by the time you come out of that place, you'll receive a computer engineering degree lol
Being also in the same business as the tech who repaired your machine ... i must say it was a honest move from him that he told you not to reflow/reball the GPU. Thumbs up for him.
Here in eastern Europe (im Bulgarian) it is a common "fix" from PC shops to reflow motherboards (GPU/CPU) but often they are not upfront with the client, or at all do not explain the risk of the repair ... as result the client take a hit after a month or two when his machine is again "dead" or crashing all the time.
So the point of my comment is that it is a good thing to see honest people making a living, even in countries (Bulgaria also) with low wages, and not going for "the quick buck".
Like the videos, stay awesome :)
This sort of store should be in every mid size town in USA. China has got the fix.
now the cost of repair is not much different from buying new.
the cost of repair in China is also rising now. especially for smartphone.
and they dont cost too much actually. I live in Pennsylvania and every year I take my laptop back to China for fixing if needed, because fixing laptop is so damn expensive in Pennsylvania...
Add me on Facebook; I know exactly where to get most anything repaired and/or upgraded anywhere throughout Pennsylvania.
for those also in the market for new hardware I can also steer them in the right direction - for items such as laptops which are fully upgradeable and repairable.
Apple would sue to shut it down. They want there ignorant apple users buy new products at least every couple years. Apple users typically are the least knowledgeable of electronics and only buy for the name.
Hey serpentza, i've been watching your videos for a while and im already impressed about how you went out of your way to physically show us the computer market and i look forward to seeing more quality videos like this! good work!
If a laptop from 2012 is outpacing your desktop you need a new desktop.
YES ... or Windows is a snail or the Desktop has a Virus etc. problem , like many computers in China ( it a plague )
also for video editing your gpu is really important. he didn't mention that he put a gpu in his desktop when he had it built.
also yeah sounds like its time for a windows reinstall on his desktop. if it is being outpaced by a macbook something is horribly wrong, since macbook pros almost always have midrange mobile GPUs that thermal throttle at load.
I didn't hear him say that, I was under the impression that the desktop is doing what he needs, but the Lenovo laptop wasn't good enough.
I got my laptop repaired while I waited in Korea. I was blown away. Dude had computer parts everywhere, stopped what he was doing and took the 10 minutes to disassemble it completely and fix the screen ribbon attachment in high speed real time. In the USA, I'd have to drop it off, leave it for days, while the guy goes through the laptop hard drive to see if there is anything interesting on it.
Let's hope it works out this time. That Macbook is awesome!
I love ur videos cmilk. u r an awesome guy along with winston
Please do a video where you buy different parts of an iphone (separate parts ) and go and assemble them and essentially create an iphone on the cheap!! there is a guy that has done that well almost.. but he couldnt speak chinese and he didnt knew china as well as you do maybe you would do it even better (cheaper) ! :D
That model was one of the last models that are not built to be trashed after an year
Bill Killernic the guy you’re talking about live in China and they both did a vid together
hey i remember you!
I believe no one can be the No.1 if Shenzhen is the No.2 city for manufacturing and repairing of electronic devices.
don't forget Dongguan
zhuliang rd from Nanjing feels disappointed
where`s the better place to shop small quantity used computer hardware(harddisk, proccesor)? guangzhou or shenzhen?
Winston is not simply just a bike guy, he definitely is pro IT or Electronics guy. As those previous huaqianbei vids , this one is also very interesting to watch. Awesome skyviews from high def footages of that drone.
This place looks awesome,I wish we had stuff like this in the UK,Its pretty hard to come across Computer shops now that sell used Pc,s or parts and that actually have the part you need. :(
Its all on Ebay in the UK rent and rates are too high.
Nevakonaza - I do agree with you. to see and try it before you buy it is much better than buying it on eBay
Nevakonaza - Also in Amazon. I just ordered and it sent from Shenzhen.
Nevakonaza - Yup, u can even customise your own laptop
Nevakonaza - in Brazil you can’t even pay Apple to replace your battery, they only sell new stuff.
Fascinating & informative video! Keep 'em coming Winston!
If I found a place like that in the USA I would never leave. That's like a utopia to a Geek/Nerd.
I love that place! Thats the kind of stuff I love seeing and being taken to in videos. More please :)
If you are into old IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads, china has an awesome community for it.
Some people developed an i5 mainboard for an IBM T60 thinkpad.
But the language barrier...
REALLY?! Link me some of that! I want to see.

Yeah I had a similar issue with my good old Asus ROG G53SW, last year I ordered a motherboard through ebay from China, and from the shipping details it seems to have been in the area you were in the video. I have to say, I'm surprised to see that the motherboard from China has never failed in any way while the original one had a lot of issues which Asus themselves couldn't fix when I had sent it on warranty. Anyway, this laptop from 2011 is still running like a new one as an SSD gave it a new life (well even the SSD is old these days, a Crucial M4), but can't play current games with it but it's good enough fro what I want to do when on trips. for the gaming it's my desktop.
Anyway binge watching these videos, Would've loved to know about your channel last year.
What an awesome video thanks for sharing Serpentza. Soon I will be sharing my videos also I see so much stuff on the road people don't believe so now I will record my adventures. You're an inspiration.
mate, you forgot to wear a suit!!!
I love these types of shops! Thanks for the great video!!!
Nice I'm glad that worked out for you. Good use of older resource. Kudos Serpentza
Spotted Kaze no Tani no Naushika ! Cheers!
Enjoyed your most of works men.
Really enjoyed this video, I like when you go around the electronics markets.
I esp enjoy your intro/outro montages, very introspective. Also your choice of music tends 2b very good.
Nice. Reminds me of your old videos where you went around to get a particular chore done. Miss those old days.
+syncmaster915n more of those coming I'm sure
+syncmaster915n more of those coming I'm sure
Oh cool, Thanks :)
Love these old gold videos 📹
I have an HP G60 that needs a few parts, wonder if I can buy one to use for parts in Shenzhen ????
hey man, nice video's. living in the USA i don't get to hear much about China and i find it really interesting. seems like a very beautiful place. anyway i really like the video's you have put up in 21:9 aspect ratio. and a small tip, that if you upscale your video's that are shot in 1080p to a higher resolution and upload them to youtube we the viewers can get better viewing quality when watching that 1080p video in 1440p setting on youtube. it just allows for more detail / youtube uses a better filter. it's especially noticeable in high motion video. take it easy!
Wow the subways are amazing there!
jakemf1 it's all shit in China our media says that everyday that's bullshit you are a lot more free in China I've been there here in America you can't even piss off your front porch
GET A LIFE.
Enjoyed the video. Stay Awesome !!
I love places like these, Everytime im in a new place I look for places like these.I can spend hours looking at the different little shops.
Do they have a website that you can order parts from?
AidanZMiner you could search on alibaba.
+SerpentZA kudos on that Naussica Manga, and really good job putting back a macbook back together, they are purposely painful to put back together.
how is a 2012 laptop almost the same power as your pc? do you have the first ever i7 in there?
What camera or gimbal do u use
the GPU was an extended warranty thing on this.. louis rossman goes on about it... shitty apple design
Yes it is, a colleague of mine had his go bang and got it repaired free (in the UK) even though it was out of warranty.
Yep, your experience with MBPs is fairly typical. Been a ton of melted GPUs. Reflowing/reballing is at best a temporary fix. Techs have suggested that it's not the BGA array that gets damaged but the GPU die itself damages through overheating because they have poor heat dissipation.
One thing I can heartily recommend - Grab macsfancontrol or another similar fan control application, and really speed up the fans in your MBP. This will keep your laptop running cooler and really extend its life by preventing this from happening again.
must be her most hated sentence. "welcome to another video".
Good Information. I have the exact same MacBook Pro ( gave up on Windows 15 years ago). Never any issues. Also appreciate the advice about the "touch screens".
my laptop died can they really fix it? It has a touch screen and dvd writer... The hard drive went bad. I live in Yingde anything like that here? thanks for your help.
Almost every city in China has a electronic world like this one, not just Shenzhen. My favorite place to shop or just look around.
theres one thing i dont think you have covered yet and its western music vs Chinese music is it better or worse or is it just out right different?
Thanks mate for ur guidance, cheers.
Been there and that place is seriously a hidden gem! amazing stuff comes out of that place
MORE computer market videos PLEASE .. just walk around and film the shops :) ... WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER .. Great vids, BIG fan! :) Thanks serpentza :)
+Simon Sykes (SykeMedia) Monday we will for ADV
2012 Retina 15 inch laptops have a very common fault with the chip that supplies power to the GPU. The solder joints on the board crack and cause loss of display and or random crashing. Probably what caused your issue. People always blame the GPU and it's usually not the GPU on this model. Just some flux and fresh solder on that chip and they are usually good to go!
Hey Winston, saw that you got an ultra wide monitor at the beginning of the video - def a correct movie for video editing :) is it 1080p or 1440p ?
Lovin' this market for repairs as shown by you 😁😁😁
Good job, very impressive!
My first time im commenting, I would absolutly love to take a walk in that store! Awsome!!!
i thought when you said they fix everything, i was like oh, they X-ray it on a microscopic scale and solder loose connections.. but no they swap parts which means....they have connections with the suppliers for brand products like APPLE .
+MASSAD SPETSNAZOVICH SEALOV they also have reflow stations and the like
tbh, the connection is not something official. For the biggest apple assembling manufac is within 20 km :)
MASSAD SPETSNAZOVICH SEALOV the components are also available elsewhere
Yes, Massad, sometimes you x-ray and find out the PCB itself is so far out of spec (warped/etc) that you wouldn't warranty replacing anything. I did this for about a decade, and while it isn't common-place, it happens.
How do you know that which shop is more professional & cheaper in repairing?
Wish the UK had stores like this.
Where is this in Shenzhen.. please tell me the location
Looks like I should wait till I'm there, to have my iPad Air repaired and hopefully upgraded there. Can save a lot of $$. And my 27" '08 iMac too!
Great video as always! I would be interested in seeing a market that sold things like automotive tools, welding equipment, turbochargers, etc. I definitely like buying that stuff on ebay!
Hey Winston, I know you're busy but I was wondering if you could help me out. I know you're an IT guy and I have a 17" Macbook Pro with a jacked up screen. Apple tells me they no longer offer replacement screens. Do you think the repair shop on this vid would have one? How bout the possibility of upgrading the CPU and HD to current standards? Thanks for your help.
Winston, what is the URL for that shop? Also is it wise for me to send my old laptop to these people to get it fixed? I live in the US (Chicago) and around here nothing is repairable. We replace it all.
what do you use to edit videos?
Fantastic place, I spent most of a day wandering around on my first visit to Shenzhen. You can get anything from individual components on the ground floor up to industrial network equipment at the top. The only bad thing was someone hanging around the entrance who tried to sell me a blatantly stolen laptop, followed me for ages with the price dropping all the time :)
This is the most awesome thing in China, if you want to do anything fix in hand, this is the place, My friend had a similar experience with you, he bought all the components on Taobao, and resemble a new macbook air
Nice! I have been to Akihabara in Tokyo many years ago. For that age of MacBook sometimes just getting out all the dust wads and putting some fresh heat sink compound on the CPU and GPU could fix the problem, but with the previous "work" on it before you got it, the motherboard could have been damaged.
Ahh such a nice memories on that Green Field and Blue sky at 10:25!!
I wish we had places like this in the states, all we have are little rinky dink shops that'll fix your iPhone for way too much
You will find places in almost every country that will fix anything you throw at them. You just need to find a repairer that does micro soldering.
Louis Rossmann in NYC specializes in mac board repair. He has a youtube channel and commented on here.
Such places are there in India also . In Kolkata , Delhi, Pune , Bombay, Chennai. , Bangalore, Hyderabad , repair is a regular thing . Try it out when you get there .
Winston, i work in a company dealing with used electronics, so thats why i so much apprieciete for You posting this video.
I have recommended Your channel to my friends in Poland, they like it as much as i do. All the best !
Just one question: Can You do the similar repairs with broken, beaten used mobile phones there ?
All the best! Radek
Yes you can! And I'll make a video about it one of these days :)
Looking forward for it Winston :)))) Larkhill21 - you're right. Its almost impossible to import refurbished phones from China. Polish costums arent relaxed either ;) If You want to export them to China they have to be min. Powering On and have good LCDs. Otherwise they could not pass the costums.
My son in law gave me his old Macbook Pro from late 2013 with 500gb SSD. Awesome machine.
How long does it take you to upload one of your 4K videos, Winston?
2:25 "2020 all that nonsense"
Prophetic words :D
hey, how much did the screen for the macbook cost?
I'm a computer technician myself and found this video very intriguing. More, please! I'm estimating you spent around $500 US for the entire repair process, which is not bad at all considering how much this particular Macbook Pro goes for on eBay.
Computers repairing is always very convenient in China. But remember always go to computer centers with larger scales in the city, don't go to those small places, such as the repairing places in universities, they do replace some components with cheaper ones.
What a place. Love it.
Wow so awesome!
Very cool vid really enjoyed it
Good to know:)
Awesome place! Do you know if those shops sell their stuff online and if it would be worth it?
Some of them have online shop on Taobao, but I think go to their retail store and talk with the IT guy would be better
This place is for me !!!!
I love it !!!
what camera are you using?
I'm so jealous, i have a mid 2009 17'' mac book pro, stopped working, typical motherboard issue, might actually be that failing capacitor every tech guy talks about for those models, .. not to mention it cost an arm and a leg back then, it just died on me a few years ago. All tech groups, companies, specialists i've been to here in Spain, want to sell me a new motherboard bought from US, and prices are just crazy expensive. If only we had a similar go-to Mall like this, i'd probaby end up living in it !! Thanks for the good work, keep it up, you Sir, are a Tech' Gentleman !! All the best.
Can I change my laptop soldered procie i5 to i7 there ?
Anyone know if there is ANYWHERE even just a little like the computer market in the UK or USA ??
love these places, I remember once I lost my old GoPro charger which required a special one and I knew in my country I was never going to find it, my wife was said no problem I know a place, we went to a place like here in a different city and very quickly found what I needed along with other neat stuff.
For about 4 - 5 years Mac laptops have solid state hard drives. Much better than the old spinning hard drives, much faster and no more hard drive failures. The newer Macs sometimes have other problems (bad screens, etc) that Mac usually fixes for free.
Winston,
I have an older Dell laptop with a malfunctioning fan. I'm thinking of bringing it to Guangzhou when I visit later this month. Where is this place ?
Best, LA Guy
Great video! Does this place fix both Macbook and PC laptops? I'm in Shenzhen next week, and need to get a couple of my machines repaired. Keep up th great work Winston!
The process is called reflowing, it is temporary, however the process is repeatable, and you can do it at home.
Synthwave music, heck yes, you rock man!
I repair laptops too as a profession. Wish had this sort of market here in Florida instead of just relying on ebay all the time for spare and replacement parts!
I had a 10 years old desktop (using it right now) that turned on and then off. The problem happened on June 2017. I easily found the problem without a multimeter and it was the motherboard's capacitors. The capacitors were rusted, bloated and most importantly, they became extremely hot right after I turned my computer. I changed the capacitors, which was extremely hard to remove from the board. Even the brand new capacitors were not properly sticking to the board. Finally, it works but the soldering is messy. Imagine you're painting the wall, but it now has a rough surface because of overlaying paints.
There were GPU problems affecting these models, but many people didn't know this and spent money while it was covered by Apple even outside the guarantee period:
MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues
An affected MacBook Pro may display one or more of the following symptoms:
-Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
-No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
-Computer restarts unexpectedly
(MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, Early 2013))
The program covers affected MacBook Pro models until December 31, 2016 or four years from its original date of sale
My idea of a great vacation there would be to shadow serpentza.
I've learned more about his city than I know about my own, and his interests overlap mine. He is much more cosmopolitan and cooler than I'll ever be.
What about your Hard drive. Did he needed it in the computer for diagnostics, or did you take it out before you handed over the computer to him for security/hacking/privacy reason?
why did you change it from Churchill to ADVChina?
Are they gonna replace the mother board for u ? Or u have to do the labor, think they will from what I seen ,what u said ...
I want to buy those used laptops and resale in my country m, what's your take on that?
You sure he can read so much Chinese?
He lived in China for more than 10 years, so surely he can.
What size is your ultrawide? 29? Cheers man keep up the good videos!
What a great introduction. To Huaqianbei. I was there in January 2016
Thanks for the video, i’ll be there next week, and will bring my old laptop.
this seems like a great place to buy a laptop for cheap, i wish there would be more places like this everywhere.
Looks similar to the Golden Arcade in HK that I used to visit in the 80's/90's and you could basically get anything !
my indoor market has only two computer booths like that
