You can even find some "ancient" boards/cards there. They import tons of used parts as electronic waste, and maintain/fix those still functioning. So if you are a collector, it's heaven for sure.

    • @timtigerz1
      @timtigerz1 Před 8 lety +8

I didn't think of that as far as the collector element. This alone would make the trip worth it.

Being also in the same business as the tech who repaired your machine ... i must say it was a honest move from him that he told you not to reflow/reball the GPU. Thumbs up for him.
Here in eastern Europe (im Bulgarian) it is a common "fix" from PC shops to reflow motherboards (GPU/CPU) but often they are not upfront with the client, or at all do not explain the risk of the repair ... as result the client take a hit after a month or two when his machine is again "dead" or crashing all the time.
So the point of my comment is that it is a good thing to see honest people making a living, even in countries (Bulgaria also) with low wages, and not going for "the quick buck".
Like the videos, stay awesome :)

for those also in the market for new hardware I can also steer them in the right direction - for items such as laptops which are fully upgradeable and repairable.

also for video editing your gpu is really important. he didn't mention that he put a gpu in his desktop when he had it built.
also yeah sounds like its time for a windows reinstall on his desktop. if it is being outpaced by a macbook something is horribly wrong, since macbook pros almost always have midrange mobile GPUs that thermal throttle at load.

I got my laptop repaired while I waited in Korea. I was blown away. Dude had computer parts everywhere, stopped what he was doing and took the 10 minutes to disassemble it completely and fix the screen ribbon attachment in high speed real time. In the USA, I'd have to drop it off, leave it for days, while the guy goes through the laptop hard drive to see if there is anything interesting on it.

Yeah I had a similar issue with my good old Asus ROG G53SW, last year I ordered a motherboard through ebay from China, and from the shipping details it seems to have been in the area you were in the video. I have to say, I'm surprised to see that the motherboard from China has never failed in any way while the original one had a lot of issues which Asus themselves couldn't fix when I had sent it on warranty. Anyway, this laptop from 2011 is still running like a new one as an SSD gave it a new life (well even the SSD is old these days, a Crucial M4), but can't play current games with it but it's good enough fro what I want to do when on trips. for the gaming it's my desktop.
Anyway binge watching these videos, Would've loved to know about your channel last year.

Yep, your experience with MBPs is fairly typical. Been a ton of melted GPUs. Reflowing/reballing is at best a temporary fix. Techs have suggested that it's not the BGA array that gets damaged but the GPU die itself damages through overheating because they have poor heat dissipation.
One thing I can heartily recommend - Grab macsfancontrol or another similar fan control application, and really speed up the fans in your MBP. This will keep your laptop running cooler and really extend its life by preventing this from happening again.

2012 Retina 15 inch laptops have a very common fault with the chip that supplies power to the GPU. The solder joints on the board crack and cause loss of display and or random crashing. Probably what caused your issue. People always blame the GPU and it's usually not the GPU on this model. Just some flux and fresh solder on that chip and they are usually good to go!

I'm so jealous, i have a mid 2009 17'' mac book pro, stopped working, typical motherboard issue, might actually be that failing capacitor every tech guy talks about for those models, .. not to mention it cost an arm and a leg back then, it just died on me a few years ago. All tech groups, companies, specialists i've been to here in Spain, want to sell me a new motherboard bought from US, and prices are just crazy expensive. If only we had a similar go-to Mall like this, i'd probaby end up living in it !! Thanks for the good work, keep it up, you Sir, are a Tech' Gentleman !! All the best.

For about 4 - 5 years Mac laptops have solid state hard drives. Much better than the old spinning hard drives, much faster and no more hard drive failures. The newer Macs sometimes have other problems (bad screens, etc) that Mac usually fixes for free.

The process is called reflowing, it is temporary, however the process is repeatable, and you can do it at home.

I repair laptops too as a profession. Wish had this sort of market here in Florida instead of just relying on ebay all the time for spare and replacement parts!

I had a 10 years old desktop (using it right now) that turned on and then off. The problem happened on June 2017. I easily found the problem without a multimeter and it was the motherboard's capacitors. The capacitors were rusted, bloated and most importantly, they became extremely hot right after I turned my computer. I changed the capacitors, which was extremely hard to remove from the board. Even the brand new capacitors were not properly sticking to the board. Finally, it works but the soldering is messy. Imagine you're painting the wall, but it now has a rough surface because of overlaying paints.

There were GPU problems affecting these models, but many people didn't know this and spent money while it was covered by Apple even outside the guarantee period:
MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues
An affected MacBook Pro may display one or more of the following symptoms:
-Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
-No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
    -Computer restarts unexpectedly
(MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, Early 2013))
The program covers affected MacBook Pro models until December 31, 2016 or four years from its original date of sale
