- In this video, entitled Minimalist Photography "Show less say more" I show the strong impact that less information in your images can have.
Minimalist Photography is pretty close to Fine Art Photography. Some would actually say they're the same. I make a small distinction between them both and in landscape photography, it's all about the horizon. I explain what I mean by this in the video.

"I've never been so precariously placed taking photos". Made me chuckle. That's exactly what I thought when I took a similar shot there last year. That and "what the hell are you doing, you're a 48 year old man scrambling over rocks for a bloody photograph". Great video and shots as always.
lol I said a similar thing only I had to add another 11 years onto your figure :)
@@GaryGough you look okay for someone who is 65 Gary.
Rob Jorg 😁😁😁
Definitely the lighthouse. For years I have had a picture in my mind of the style of photography I wished to develop, and then I stumbled across this video; it’s like I’ve come home. Thanks for the images mate. They are extraordinarily beautiful .
Cheers Jack 👍👍
You know what they say ....less is more. I lke it Gary. Now i get to go redo my photos in a new way.:)
Whether there's a horizon or no... Minimalism and fine art - are intrinsically linked. I think minimalism, aesthetically - is much easier to define and depict - than 'fine art'... Hence, this leads me to my thought on 'fine art'... and that is ~ 'how refined that art is'... !? Food for thought... Thanks Gary... :)
I agree totally with your analogy Nick 👍👍
@@GaryGough Have a GREAT weekend Sir ! :D
Adam Gibbs advocated some wellies with Vibram soles, same as walking boots, but I have some walking boots with Vibram soles and they can be quite slippy too. Minimalist vs Fine Art? Labels with no hard and fast meanings in my book. Thanks for sharing Gary, good to see you out and about again.
Cheers Steve
Another great video Gary, i went to Dovercourt Bay to photograph the lighthouse and was really pleased with the results. Keep up the good work Gary.
Thanks 👍
Great video, like the horizon left in the photograph and much prefer the colour to the b&w, green really pops, who was the handsome bloke standing among the wave breakers lol, thank you for sharing Gary ,
lol Handsome indeed :) Cheers John
Great video Gary. Loved the images, my fave was the lighthouse at 12:06 - the soft colours. I really got a sense of scale of the size of the breakwaters when you were walking amongst them, I didn't think they were that big. Nice perspective of them as well. As long as you are safe!!! Talk to Adam Gibbs about wellies.
Thanks Susan. I love my Muck boots but even though they have a walking sole, they're still damn slippery. Gibbsy has the same boots as me :)
Long exposure shots like these are what made me fall in love with photography.. it’s been years since I tried a long exposure shot. Watching this video ignited that love again. Thank you sir.
Wonderful Photos and drone shots! AND excellent choice for your musical soundtrack! Naming the composer(s) give them better exposure, don't you know.
Very true. I usually do. Point taken though 👍👍
Great video my sister live in Wallasey New Brighton got new members in my camera club watching your video
Best wishes paul Moore
South Liverpool Photographer Society 📷👍
minimalism, that's what i like ! The first photograph with the post processing... great ! love it.
Thank you Maxence
Loving these long exposure shots Gary. I live by the sea and can't spend too long away from it and in my humble opinion these type of images you have produced recently are my favourite of yours. I personally think minimalistic and fine art are perfect bedfellows.
Glad you like them! Cheers Ian 👍👍
Great Video!!! Great Photos.!!! I hope the new drone lives a little bit longer. ☺️
I hope so too! 😁😁😁
Loved it ❤️... Great format ... Excellent images and the speed processing brilliant 👍✌️
Many thanks!
Some 30 seconds that mate 😂😂😂 stunning work though mate
Definitely need to add that last shot to the bad I’m local to that area 👍🏻
Oh good lord....I just shot the same location last weekend ( I'm not following you ,honest 😅) I adore those sea defences ,so many opportunities . Fabulous images Gary ,loving your Minimal 👍👍
I'm in that area a lot Lynne. Give me a shout if you fancy a collab 👍👍
Nice Gary - top marks for your bravery. All great shots. I actually really like the colour shot of the breakwater barrier going off into infinity.. I think you took this at the start when you were precariously balanced on the breakwater...very good...
Precariously balanced indeed :) Cheers John 👍👍
I got that shot of the curvy breakwater from on top - yes it is dodgy, I got it, its good, one of my best. Not planning on doing it again any time soon. I was up on the groynes when the tide was coming in, a life guard was waiting patiently further inshore.... :o)
lol I thought about going there a couple of days before hand but bottled it :) Dodgy indeed, especially with 2 tripods and my vlogging gear 😃😃
Brilliant Gary and some stunning Minimalistic images to show for it. The lighthouse is my favourite. Cheers Keith
Cheers Keith 👍👍
Dear Gerry,
What insanely beautiful pictures. For you, it is only a 30-minute journey to the location where you took these photos. Much longer for me from the east of the Netherlands. But it does inspire me to apply this technique, vision and view on a somewhat smaller level.
Thanks for your video.
Excellent video Gary, never been to photograph there but quite often fancied a trip as we have a workshop in Wallasey, so could combine work and photography. In relation to non slippy wellies, I was a fly fisher and you can get thigh waders and then a pair of wader boots with studs, non slippy even on the green stuff. All the very best and thanks for another informative and interesting vlog, appreciated.
I'll look them up, thank you 👍👍

Hope it helps out, cheers, Andy
Hi Gary, I finally became a member . Took me a while. Will you do more post processing vids for your members?
I know you can teach me and others so much more about the cleaning techniques, lighting the image, drawing a viewer into the picture etc
Would love to hear from you
Regards,
Marcel
Hello Gary, great video showing your commitment to get "that" shot. It would be rude to choose a favourite shot as they are all awesome. Thanks for sharing and remember to stay safe 😷
Thank you Malcolm 👍👍
Wow, the master of long exposure! brilliant as always Gary, would love you to slow down that editing process. Mrs G will be really upset if you destroy another drone.
lol I don't think I'd tell her :) Cheers John 👍👍
I like and enjoy you layed back down to earth 🌍 style. Easily understood and Absorb. Thank you.
Cheers Ralph
Gary you should have a tutorial on how you process these long exposures, would be worth paying for!
On the cards John
@@GaryGough Good stuff, I have always admired how you do those long exposures.
Hello Gary ! Always enjoy watching your videos. From a viewer across the pond in the Colonies !
Cheers from this side of the pond :)
Welcome to the Wirral. The whole north and west coast of the Wirral is great for pictures. For a while they put a light back in the light house.
I have been up at new Brighton lighthouse lol with a friend and this video has helped a lot in are photos thank you Gary for sharing. Look forward to more of your work
Wow, impressive ... some of your finest work in my opinion ... can't wait to get up the Wirral myself.
I see you took your twin brother with you then ... lol
Ambiguity can be such a useful thing to have in photography. Audience interpretation really furthers the discussion of photos I believe. Nice video Gary!
Agree totally Ben, cheers 👍👍
Nice one! 👏🏻📸🎥📷 I’ll give the drone 3 weeks....
lol Thanks for the vote of confidence 😊😊
what a great location and not too far away. You captured some inspirational images, I loved the vlog Garry looking forward to the next
Thanks 👍 Cheers Paul
Hi Garry, Thanks for the great video. My favourite is the one before the penultimate. If you go back on Monday 20th July (New Moon) you may get the high tide you were hoping for. New moon and full moon give spring tides and a day or so either side. The tides come in further and go out further, so you get higher and lower tides than normal. But, beware, because if you get trapped by the tides, the currents are stronger in spring tides and what may be safe in a neep tide may not be safe in a spring tide.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm away photographing elsewhere all next week. I'll go back though. Cheers
Great video and wonderful photos ! Thanks Gary !
Many thanks 👍👍
Wotta spot! As always, the location is superb, the advice sound and the photos inspirational. Cheers from DownUnder.
Much appreciated! 👍👍
Lovely images, I’d love to see a video of your post processing of these images. I appreciate a lot of people are far more advanced than I am in photoshop and might find it boring but it is those little tweaks you do that take these type of images to the higher level and I’d love to learn how to do it.
Thank you
Minimalistic as you say is a very fine line from fine art, liked the shot of the lighthouse but my preference was the breakers, keep up the good work as I'm loving your video's 😊
Cheers Philip 👍👍
Gary, get some wellies with studs on the bottom they help a lot. You can also buy studs to put on existing wellies (they look like little screws).
Studs for wellies? I paid £90 for my Muck boots. You'd think they would have better soles. I'll look them up. Cheers
Great vlog Gary, giving the drone a nice run out with the b roll. Fantastic minimalist images really loved the speed processing 👍
Cheers Chris 👍👍
If you're after wellies with grip Gary then you need to buy some Hoggs Field Sport Neoprene wellies, they have a walking boot sole and are insulated, you will pay around £75 but worth every penny. Great minamalist shots too.
I just paid £90 for my Muck boots which aparantly have walking soles. they're still slippery though :(
@@GaryGough how bizarre, maybe the planet is just getting more slippy!
The concrete breakwaters looked more appealing to me before you did the monochrome conversion. In a rather colourless scene, even very muted colours magnetically drew my eye. I'm a big fan of simplistic monochrome but this was an exception that proved the rule. An entertaining, interesting and inspirational Vlog. Many thanks.
Well well! Back in my neck of the woods and you did it in style matey! Not annoyed that I’ve just done the same sea defences, not at all! 😂 only kidding, excellent shots Gary. I’ll give you 4 vlogs with the drone 😂 what was the drone? Mavic?
lol Yes m8 I bought another Mavic. I was going to call you for the trip but you're really bad these days. Putting your kids and family before me pfff outrageous m8 😃😃😃
I'm hoping for at least half a dozen trips with the drone :)
Hi Gary, a few weeks ago I "found" you're channel here. In the mean time I already watched many posts of you and just like always this one is again very learnfull and inspiring! Thanks a lot for this one, next week we going on holidays at the sea and I'll keep this video in my mind ;-). One note as you asked, I prefer more your "old" style of video posts. But again, many thanks! Looking forward to your next video.
Agree totally, I only made this one different because I didn't record enough video. Bit of a mistake on my behalf :)
Brilliant Video and fantastic images Gary, love your work and thanks for sharing.
Many thanks Tyrone. Cheers xx You've got a couple of nice images on the way. I'll upload them in an hour. THANK YOU
Very very nice indeed Gary, awesome work. 💪
Thank you kindly
You have a great photographic brain and a fantastic eye (eyes) Gary, always a real pleasure to see your work.
Thank you! Cheers! 👍👍
Terrific shots Gary. I like the lighthouse on it own, with the lighthouse keeper looking out
lol Cheers Vincent
Wow, what awesome images, just love this Minimalist photography. Apart from the lighthouse at 12.06, I tend to like your image at 13.00. Very hard to pick a favourite, love your work and appreciate you sharing your knowledge
Awesome! Thank you! Cheers Ross
As an enthusiast photographer and its only my personal opinion I preferred your minimalist to fine art.
Your opinoin can never be wrong, that's what counts :)
Just stunning. Always inspiring, I know this is why you make these vlogs, another success. I'm inspired. ❤
Very kind, thank you
that's great, friend thanks ! :)
Top vlog again Gary, not to far from me to, just over the water, love it
Thanks 👍
Beautiful images Gary. Love your work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Since May I have my own new camera. Since then I haven't been watching any video's but.... At least I should keep watching yours Gary. Loved every second of this one! Great pictures as always and your music chose is sublime ❤️
Thank you 👍👍
Hi Gary, definitely more fine art please. I love it , wish I could do it...
Just learn long exposure photography, it's easy
Great work! Love this video, very inspiring 😎
Thanks so much!
wow. Another fantastic set of images.
Many thanks!
Cracking video Gary and lovely images , yes I noticed you keep passing by on the lighthouse b roll .
lol cheers :)
Awesome pics Gary, just awesome!! I was there also at weekend scouting the area, cant wait to go back. Keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍 Cheers Jason 👍👍
Another very enjoyable and inspiring video Gary!
Many thanks
I agree that it's a fine line between fine art and minimalist photography - I guess the line is down to how much you extract from the original image before it crosses over into art. Either way Gary your images are stunning. Hope the drone lasts a while...avoid those low piers with wires and don't go too close to Heathrow airport!
lol Cheers Nick 👍👍
You are Great Photographer & Good Person also.
Many many thanks
Great video Gary always look forward to your vlogs, i think every picture is stunning, my fav is the one with the three wave breakers almost alien 👍
Thanks 👍 Cheers 👍👍
Very very nice job and images, congratulations and thanks for sharing !
Thank you! Cheers!
Great vid, great location, great photos 👍 love the minimalism / fine art you do Gary
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful spot! Wonderful shots! Congratulations for your new drone! Greetings from southern Chile!
Thank you very much!
Loving the drone shots as well
Thanks Steve
Well done. No, very well done! Enjoyed the video and enjoyed the images more. Great work! Thanks also for the interviews you've been doing on your channel. Cheers from Texas!
Very kind of you to say Gary, thank you 👍👍
Yes it was noticed :) and love your minimalist photography style.
lol cheers :)
Great vlog, and brilliant images. I can't pick a favourite as I like them all equally. I prefer your ususal style of vlog (no voiceover after the event) as the passion, emotion and excitement that your feeeling as you shoot really comes through.Fine art or minimalist - doesn't matter, just wonderful images to look at, and for me that's what counts.
I had to do a voicover, I didn't have enough talky bits for the video. You'd think I would have nailed it by now lol Thanks for saying though, appreciate it
@@GaryGough You're welcome Gary
Always enjoy your videos Gary,
Thanks
Cheers Benny 👍👍
Hi Gary, one word.....Awesome photos!! Right down my alley, have always loved long exposure and now getting into photographing it. Great videos, thank you for the simplicity
Loving the photos Gary, and the new drone looks great too. Just avoid piers!
Good call! 😁😁
Great vlog as usual buddy really enjoyed that thank you
Thanks 👍
Excellent video and love the drone footage. I think my favorite is the lighthouse but with the pastel colors instead of the B&W. (@12:10)
Thanks Mark 👍👍
Wow 👍👍👍 ,I'll dream 😂 one day my photography will get half as good as this , normally i like black and white long exposure but I think the colour was far better
Thank you! Cheers! 👍👍 Just keep practicing Brian or you could of course come on one of my workshops lol
Really enjoyed your video. So glad I stumbled onto your CZcams channel. You have a new subscriber from North America.
Thanks and welcome 👍👍
Another good watch this week, I am never really convinced with the wording although there must be some truth that it is indeed fine art rather than good photography! and the knowledge how to do things differently and you certainly know how to do that! I have never been to where you shot these pictures so thank you for taking us there!
Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your kind comment 👍👍
Enjoyable vid, Gary. All the images are nice, but my personal favourite is at 12:06 (love the muted colours!) .
Many thanks 👍👍
Best photographer and vlogger bar none.
Consider yourself on my Christmas Card list 😍😍
Great video Gary & super photos, loving the drone footage 👌🏽
Thanks 👍
really enjoyed this gary going back to the same location is such a wondeful way to learn more
Cheers Mark 👍👍
I really love the minimalist photos .. i have tried several times to capture in camera what i see in my mind but so far i have not achieved what i wanted .. getting closer though so will keep at it.
Videos like this really help when learning a new skill. Thank you
Great video Gary and stunning images, my son lives just across from the lighthouse and we have been many times but your photos will make us see them a little bit different from now on. Keep up the great work and be safe.
Thanks 👍
Gotta say your pretty quick for a big guy lol loved that panning portion through the blocks where you kept reappearing well done 👍🏻
Amazing pictures. You got a new subscriber. Would love to learn your editing techniques
Love it love it love it👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Ronny
I loved thge vlog as usual. As per Finer Art and Minimalistic I think it is a very fine thin line and both could be in both categories.
Cheers Martin 👍👍
Great video. I liked the new style. My favorite shot was Lighthouse at 240sec. Thanks for the helpful content.
Cheers Drake 👍
Briljant! I am definitely going to try this at home!
Go for it!
Wonderful. I really enjoyed both the content and the videography. Fantastic.
Thank you very much!
Excellent images, Gary. And I like the new style of your videos.
Many thanks. A couple of nice images coming your way. THANK YOU as always xx
I enjoy the variety, Gary.
Engaging and entertaining as always Gary. Love the way you are so clear about what you want before make the shot - such an underappreciated competence, borne of years of experience I guess.
Thank you Paul xx
Wow! Inspiring and extremely beautiful. Thanks, Stefano
Many thanks!
Great vlog mate, always love your b&w minimalist shots and always learn something new. I also noticed the text if you were wondering 😉 cheers Jase
lol cheers Jason
I like the idea of minimalism
Cheers
Great images Gary, shot the lighthouse many times I only live 10 minutes away. Need to be careful on those groyne’s a couple of lads had to be rescued by the RNLI back in July after they were cut off by the tide
