    Quick tip: use 3 rigging straps to make a cradle around the root ball; one strap around rootball (use a shackle to tie both ends together) and loop 2 straps around the first strap on opposide sides of tree. Slide the forks wide and get the straps on so that you have 4 points of contact. Tree rides plumb and doesn't damage the root structure. Chains also work if no straps are available

    I can finally give you some advise T. I’ve planted a ton of 48” box trees. Here in norther California. Use a tree saver strap around the trunk of the tree. And lift it with your excavator. It supper easy that way. Also you should’ve put a drain pipe at the bottom of the hole. The water will puddle and kill the roots. Don’t ask me how I know.
    Peace T

    Yo here's some tips for those: I have installed a bunch of them. Leave the box on spread the forks so it straddles the tree box or if your forks dont go wide enough get the tree very close to the edge and tip it over. take off bottom but leave sides on. Push/Slide tree into hole. Cut straps lift box and fill that hole. Lifting the tree by the trunk most certainly damages a ton of the fine root hairs that help the tree take up water and nutrients roots and will give you a much higher mortality rate. Good luck.

    • @ZethKinnettFishing
      @ZethKinnettFishing Před 3 lety

      Oh one last thing, you do not need to remove the bottom if you dont want to but if it's a tree that produces a big tap root you may want to.

    I used to work For Evergreen Nurseries in Del Mar in the 90’s. This brings back memories. Improvise, adapt, adjust. You could be part of the solution or part of the problem. The biggest tree we put in was a magnolia so big that you could put a swing on it. Delivered it on a step deck standing up because it was too big to lay down.

  • @charleswilliams7766
    @charleswilliams7766 Před 3 lety +1

    Nice! Best way to do a 48” box, bust the sides leave the bottom lay it down in front of the hole. Take the bottom off and flip into the hole slowly. Good job though!!

    Biggest tree I've installed was 3, 16-20 ft tall hollies. Weighing in at 6,000 lbs a piece. Lifted them in the holes with a boom truck. Holes were hand dug though. I work for a nursery that also installs, so that is a pretty normal Tuesday for us. My own company on the side has been only dissectum Japanese Maples, but I am getting up there!

    Remove only the bottom planks when planting these trees, strap around the bottom , put your forks thru the straps on the top of the box, lower the tree in the hole, take a big heavy 5 foot long pry bar and cut the straps, pull the 4 supporting boards out, and the tree will love you!

    Here’s a good general rule of thumb:
    24” box=tracked bobcat
    36” box=tracked bobcat
    48” box= backhoe loader
    60-72” box= 12k reachlift
    84-96” box= John Deere 644K sized loader
    120” box tree=75 ton crane
    144” box tree= 100 ton crane
    15-35’ BTH date or Mexican fan palm=12k reachlift
    15-25’ BTH Canary palm=40 ton crane
    Always strap the tree to the equipment, either by chain or strap
    Dig the tree pits when the trees arrive, or measure box depth at the nursery. Planting a tree too deep is a sure way to kill it
    Always plant large trees right after demo/rough grade. This insures that you can use larger machinery and be more productive
    Never try to lift a tree using straps attached to the trunk, that’s a sure way to skin the bark and open up the tree to infection
    Hopefully this info helps your next install go more smoothly. Great Job on using what you had to get the job done! Thanks for pumping these videos out!
    The biggest tree I have planted was a 240” box Quercus agrifolia. We boxed it, dragged it on metal pipes from its old home to its new home, 200’ away. It was going to need to be removed for new home construction. The homeowner loved it, and paid us close to $187,000 to move it.

    Over here in northern illinois we plant alot of 2.5 inch tree which are usually a 36" root ball, we get a few 48" once in awhile but people's favorite besides a 36" is 54" . Those 54" root ball trees usually range from 10 ft to 16 ft. They could be a little hassle at times.

    We spent five months slowly digging up a 30 ft japanese fern tree, digging up only a quarter of the root ball at a time, making sure the tree goes into as little shock/stress as possible.
    When it came time to move it we had to transplant it at night cause of traffic, the tree was so wide, it was hanging off both side of the trailer, even after tieing it back, it was talking up almost three lanes of traffic. Fun night!
