Dressage Disaster + Disaster + Disaster + Disaster = Canada Sets The Bar For The Elite Team Low

  • When we first started the dressage disaster series there is always 1 or 2 Canadian dressage riders from the elite team in the mix. Those riders are set to leave a legacy as we watch the entire elite Canadian dressage roster fail in the dressage ring. Young and old alike, dressage in Canada needs to make better choices and start choosing talent over money.
This year has been exceptional for Canada in terms of dressage disasters, 3 dressage riders have actually fallen off at the Global Dressage Festival. If there ever was an argument against helmets the Canadian riders have ensured that dressage will never return to top hats.
In this video we watch Evi Strasser, Brooke Mancusi, Ally Dunlop and more have an epic equestrian fail one after another.
The bar is so low you can fall off and be on a team as long as you have money.
*Note for Karen - Instead of being mad that I posted, be mad that it happened. No need to worry about my skill level as I have ridden at a higher level than all but one of these riders. I trust that means you think I am qualified to have the opinions that I do and will accept them because of that.

the frustrating part is the amount of time and money poured into these horses but the basic training has been missed. They are ridden indoors and then in competition, you have breezes, flapping tents, seagulls flying over, unusual noises and the horses predictably spook. Can't blame the horses for the training and preparation failures. They should have been desentitized and bomb proofed long before getting into a venue that has multiple opportunites for meltdowns

Is it not common at this level (the upper levels in general) to desensitize to outdoor stimuli? Don't they ever take them on hacks around their farms or down the road? I understand these are super high dollar horses, and I'm just a Para rider at the lower level still, but I believe it's essential to take a horse I'm training on out for hacks, and even a trail ride. It's healthy for both me and the horse to get out of the ring, walk around areas we usually don't ride in, heck even a stroll down the driveway is a whole different enviroment than the ring.
I'm genuinely surprised if it's not common for all the big riders to do that. No wonder their horses spook, you're definitely correct that it's not the horses' fault.

A very famous Dressage trainer who has written many books that are now being translated from Deutsche to English told me when I was scribing for him a qoute that I have never forgotten. It has probably been heard, but this was back in 1992: " Dressed is not a sprint, it's a marathon. If you want faster results, choose another sport. It requires discipline, patience, athletic muscle strength, adherence to the basics and a healthy and sound mind of both the horse and rider. If on tries to bypass any one of these things, du bist kaput! " everyone always says no legs (feet), no horse. True. But IMHO, if your horse or you don't love the marathon, and you are going for the sprint, these are the things that go wrong. Just like mostly following a recipe for dinner, your results maybe less than palatable and you have to ask yourself what did I miss or forget. It's hard to create a masterpiece this way. Lol 😳😊🍀

First rule of horse training: preparation for the movement is more important that the movement itself. If you don't train for the venue, the rest of the training is irrelevant.

The riders all worked through these issues or excused themselves as the horse was unable to calm down. This happens when riding horses. Some days, you can ride through the tense moments and regain focus. Sometimes the horse doesn't want to calm down because they are overwhelmed and spooked, and it is very nice to see these excellent riders handle the horse behavior with dignity.

I am not saying these riders do this because I have not seen them personally, nor do I know them. It's pretty common for 3-4 years olds to be put into draw reins with their noses to their chest being forced to do piaffe and passage. Some of these horses don't even have 30 days on their backs when the riders are doing this.

  • @bqualitysnake6549
    @bqualitysnake6549 Před rokem +3

I'll give them one thing, at least they were consistent.
But for real, both horses and riders seem incredibly unprepared for spooks or sudden movements, nor feel that their horse is trigger stacking/a ticking bomb before they fully explode. The first rider could probably have gone on fine if it just stopped for a bit outside the arena, the rider in the canter pirouette should easily have noticed how tense the horse is and make the movement looser to let them "deflate" a bit before the next exercise, losing a few points vs being over threshold for the entire ride seems like an easy answer. Yes many of them train in harmful ways intentionally, but others seem to genuinely have no clue why their horse explodes repeatedly.
I think trainers, riders, breeders and their sponsors push their horses out on high level competitions way too fast, the horses have little to no emotional control or understanding of their surroundings/bodies and they seem to skip over the basic level training and exercises because their horses can look flashy enough without understanding basic rythm or suppleness, skipping collection, contact and straightness completely. The only thing they seem to have is impulsion, but stress based impulsion isn't solving any issues either...

Well if you look at videos of meltdowns and disasters, obviously that’s what you’re going to see. But if you see a real competition, dressage is not that bad, there are horse well ridden as well as horses bad ridden, but I think that’s were the beauty of this sport is. Riding a horse well is really really difficult, and is normal to have mistakes, but those mistakes don’t mean that the rider shouldn’t be riding anymore or that the horse is being misstreated.

❤ very few horses are working through their bridle... this sport has attracted riders w coarse & hard hands...:(
*"you're a beginner rider if you use your legs to make them go, and use your hands to slow & stop them".
And thats a quote for classical dressage. This what i see now in your sport, ppl up on a horse kicking them to move out and they capture all that forward motion in their hands. Their hands catch the energy created by the feet n legs. Basically you're watching beginner riders trying to ride very advanced levels. Why?
    Bragging rights.
Its just fast becoming a sport where force is used to accomplish the skill that riders are missing...
    "Anything FORCED or MISUNDERSTOOD
    Can never be beautiful".
Your use of force to create forward momentum?
To be captured by force w the hands?
    It's beginner rider level - that's all...
Hands are so difficult to develope & very telling about a person's character.
Back to the drawing board, people...;(
Start over w your training program w the horses? And begin learning how to ride w gentleness in your commands.
    No more forcing forward impetus-
Only for it be sandwiched in between your hard hard hands....;(

Most of the comments on this video are absolutely ridiculous. I saw no poor riding, I saw gentle attempts to work through issues, and a dropped shoulder and spin that could dump the best of riders. Have all of you that have negatively spoken about these riders NEVER had an off day?? Have your horses ALWAYS in every moment performed to perfection?? If you say yes to both or either of these questions - YOU'RE LYING! They are horses, we are people. There are a million things that could be off on either teammate. Things happen! And they happen in every single equine sport at every single level. This channel needs to stop! Or - here is a suggestion - how about spend your efforts and use your platform to focus on the real abuse and horrors that exist in the horse world?? Do some real good for the animals! Not this armchair dressage criticism with absolutely no merit whatsoever. Disappointing and unnecessary!
