- Updating a previous video I did for 2022/2023 on how to download updated maps to Garmin EDGE GPS cycling computers, specifically older models that do not support loading of world-wide maps via Garmin Express.
How To:
● Website: extract.bbbike.org/
● Pre-made Maps: download3.bbbike.org/osm/garm...
● Pre-made City Maps: download3.bbbike.org/osm/bbbike/
● Download Zip / Extract Files.
● Connect your Garmin EDGE to a Mac/PC via USB.
● Copy gmapsupp.img into /Garmin/ folder.
● Want multiple maps/areas? Rename gmapsupp.img to gmapsupp_AU.img, etc.
Note: Edge 520 is very limited and requires the gmapsupp.img to be called gmapbmap.img (backup your original first!).

Always here with the info I need exactly when I need it. Thanks Shane 😁
Wonderful! Adding lots of value for all us "older" Garmin users!
Great information! I’ve been using bbbike for my 520 for several years. But I’ve always replaced the gmapbmap base maps file. This is definitely preferable. Thanks!
Thanks Shane this is even better than the last video you did back in 2018 especially that website has moved to a new location.
Simply brilliant. Thanks GPLama
Took me a while but it finally worked!!! Thanks sooooo much for this!
Dude!! Love it! Thank you, this is a great help 🙏
Concise, clear, usefull. I whish all videos on YT could be of the same quality
Nice update, thanks. Green screening is on point as well!👍
Cheers!
This site was broken for long time. Thank you for the info it works again :)
Thank you so much for teaching, it’s very useful information 👍🏽👍🏽 I have confused on adding new map to Garmin Edge before. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
This worked a treat!
Shane, Thank you so much I was struggling so much and you made it so simple 😊
Glad it helped!
Thanks for this, good way to add the Europe maps to my US 530. 😊
Not sure I had space to do that via the Garmin maps download.
Thanks for reminding me I need to download the maps.
Thanks Shane from Portugal
What a joy! Finally maps with roads 😂 on my edge 840
Not like the preinstalled Garmin maps that came with it.
Thank you Shane for the video.👏👏👏
I've watched several tutorial videos and yours was the best! How I wish I had found yours first and saved me more time! Very simple steps and straightforward! Successfully installed a Philippine map for my Garmin EDGE 1040! Thanks for the help!
i tried for my 1030, which among the 4 files you selected for Philippines?
great and informative video that gets right to the point.
The pre-made maps link is even better!!
Not a garmin user but I can definitely see how these videos would be really helpful
Thank you so much for this. It works a perfectly (you gotta insert the new map in the Garmin folder. So not in the “custom maps” folder)
Just trying this out on my edge 520!
You are the best!
Excellent.
I worked perfectly! Thank you so much!!! How often will these maps be updated in the future? Greetings from Belgium!
Been using OSM on my Edge 530 pretty much from the beggining. Not sure, if it was an issue of all the early series or just my unit (bought it just about a week after release), but even after performing all map updates via Garmin Express roundabouts were not marked as roundabouts (they were shown as many little turns), which made it especially with auto-zoom enabled pretty much unusable for navigation. OSM solved this problem and also added many small paths worth for mountain biking, which Garmin's maps can only dream of knowing.
which file are you downloading?
country.osm.garmin-bbbike-latin1.zip
or
country.osm.garmin-opentopo-latin1.zip
what's the difference?
wahoo should take note of this lol . I always have issues downloading maps . It would be nice to side load maps onto the device .
Great info as usual Shane! Thank you. Question: Do you have better experiences with bbbike or openfietslite for Garmin cycle computers?
iirc I used the bbbike ones with good success.
Being forced by Garmin into purchasing region maps for older devices is such a scam.
Shane. can you clarify the worldwide map feature from the 1030 plus. I believe the worldwide maps are topographic maps only and not routable maps. so you cannot create a route and even though you have these units you need to buy a map pack?
which is the most suitable map format? bbike or openfietmaps lite? there are quite a few to choose from.
thanks and greetings from Colombia.
Found another PLUS I've loaded one of the AU map pack's on my other Garmin an old Oregon 300 and it works too. But as before it will only see one of the new pack's img files at a time. But just removing it then copy any other to SD card it seem to work as well. The 300 haa a much slower processor but when walking or bike riding it should be ok.
Thanks ! Do you know if best bike split power target is already available?
HiShane, always a pleasure to watch your videos. Just wondering , you show nice colorful maps, yet, when I install them on my edge 1030 the maps are greyish . I just replaced mine for a new 1030 under warranty and through Garmin Express updated , still the maps are grey and much less clear .... any idea ? Thanks!
The 1030 doesn't have the best colour contrast. Have you tried turning the brightness all the way up? (this will be at the cost of battery life though).
There are many format options. Which format do you most recommend? Thanks!
Hi Shane, thanks for the instructions. Any idea how I can get inland lakes? more specifically just 1 small area in Ontario Canada?
Thanks Terry
Hello, Great video. Will it help me with Climb pro feature for my Garmin Edge 840?
Just got my Garmin 540 and looking to install these maps.
Hi Shane. I have a edge 530 from UK and I’ve now moved to Aus. I tried downloading the Aus maps and copied it to the device but when I go on the maps is just all white. Do you know what I may of went wrong? Seems like all the other maps have sum files along with the img files?
Very informative video, but it seems many of the links are no longer there for full country maps. I can only find the US divided into regions or states. Is there a full North America map that I may have overlooked? Txs in advance.
To use a specific map should I disable the other maps that are enabled by default?
Very good!!! Can you tell me if those maps can work with other brands gps units like Igpsport or Magene?
Very unlikely they’ll work in other units.
What we should do for Edge Explore 1st gen please.
An issue I have is when downloading multiple files to cover big countries some of the files don't work (don't show up on Garmin edge 530). I'm using the Garmin openfietsmap lite. When using Garmin cycle map I have no issues adding multiple files. Don't like Garmin cycle maps much though
Very helpful BUT, I now have seven maps listed in the select map mode. How to you select which map you want to use for a specific activity profile. All maps are enabled. I've experimented with selecting different maps but the map for navigation pretty much looks the same for each.
Nice! Can I manage normal maps using this method for the 1030 plus? For some reason, updating maps is such a pain it’s hard to even tell what’s installed and taking up space on Garmin Express and coupled with the dire download I’m sure I’m well behind on a map version. This is the only app that I struggle with!
You can load these on a 1030 Plus. Not sure they're /that/ much better though. Those units have pretty regular updates from Garmin.
Super useful for upcoming mallorca trip! Will these maps be fully navigable and allow me to navigate preloaded routes on the 830?
I believe so. 👌🏼
A couple of years ago I used these on my 810 when I went to Mallorca and central Portugal, they were fully routeable - when I remembered to actually select them 🙄
Got the full Au Maps working on the Edge 800 by putting them on the micro SD card but it will only allow me to put one on at a time. I did change file name and they do work No big problem really but the full packs (4 of them) what are the differences ?. I have my original Topographic V4 file and have worked out one of the new maps it marked as Topo so this must be the topographic one but what about the other three?. I like ridding my Mountain bike on NSW South Coast trails and looking forward to trying these out.
How do u think: do these maps work on garmin navigator gpsmap series?
I live in Portugal and just bought the 530.
Next week I'm leaving to Las Vegas to do a bicycle tour through the southwest.
While planning the daily routes with the garmin connect app I've been able to pinpoint the route and zoom in that area even though I bought it here in Portugal. Even in the garnin itself I can zoom in in that part of the world with good precision. Is this normal?
Should I download the map anyway or do you think I'm good to go?
Hi there Shane. I've done the entire process for the Canary Islands on my North American Garmin Edge 830 but oddly while Morocco and Western Africa (and even Cape Verde) show on the base map, the Canary Islands do not actually show when browsing the maps. Will it simply load once we are there?
what is the difference between bbbike nad ontrail maps?
Hi Shane, I have Garmin Europe pre-installed on my 830 but am unsure if it offers turn by turn navigation. I tried using this video to install routes for France when I was there last year but did not have turn by turn. Not sure if I did something wrong.
Im using the map from OpenMtbMap
I can't get any downloaded maps to load. They don't show up on my maps list. Deleted all the Garmin basemaps, all I have now is Trailforks.
Downloaded Colorado in many formats, my 540 doesn't recognize any of them.
Hi Shane, I seem to remember that there was someone loading enhanced maps for Wahoo. Did you know about that? Maybe a future video
It was quite the process to get them loaded. I’ll revisit this if it becomes easier.
Which is the best map source to use for an Edge 530?
It depends how much area you want to have on the unit. The 'Garmin Onroad' maps are the smallest, iirc. The 530 should have enough space for most countries using the standard OSM maps over on BBBike.
Very useful information, what’s the trick to actually use these maps? I have downloaded, unzipped and placed the map file into the Garmin folder, but it’s not showing up in the devices map list, I have rebooted but don’t have it as a selectable item 🤷♂️
In my testing they show up when next rebooting. What Egde model are you using?
@@gplama I have loaded the file to an edge 830 and a 1040 rebooted a couple of times but no sign of them in the map list
Does this technique work in GPS MAP 66 sr??
Curious, my old 530 have full EU maps, but when I went to US I was able to follow gpx courses I loaded on a map totally fine. Map displayed correctly. Those same US courses load onto a correct map on my 540 that doesn't have US map loaded. So what's that all about. Why do u need to load maps if they display anyway?
Hi, I have a Garmin 530 and the official maps in europe is from late 2021!!! Garmin have stopped updating gps MAPS in Europe? I Am using some aftermarket maps, but is a shame that garmin just dropped their Europe users!!!
I asked Garmin Support the same question, they replied that a new Europe update is coming in February 2023. 🤞
Coming to Berlin?
i saw that there are 4 files for PHILIPPINES, which one will I choose?
Does someone know if it is possible to install these maps or any other non official garmin maps also on the edge explore 2 ? Thanks for any feedback.
good question. I also have the same concerns
i have garmin 1040 asia unit. i dont see any elivation profile if i create map on device itself. no climbpro or climp explorer. i am on firmware version 17.29 no new update
This maps don´t have contour lines, right?
not showning me any details of the map, I don't know why
Does this work on Edge 1000?
If so, to get best performance do I disable all maps and just keep this one enabled?
Thanks Shane
Likely. I don’t have one of those to test myself.
@@gplama i too have an edge explore 1000. Stuck on what format to download. Choosing a format from the drop down list was not discussed in your video, could you please clarify that part, specifically for routable bicycle map. Does bicycle use type affect which format....i am doing road and gravel trails not MOUNTAIN biking. Thanks!!
I have a 530 that came with the US maps installed. If I download the maps for Europe from this site
1. Will I still have my US maps on the device
2. If both sets of maps are on the device does the device automatically know which maps to use
It'll use both.
GP….? Any idea of this will work on the Garmin XT satnav?
No idea sorry.
I don't know why when i am trying to connect my Garmin 520 to my laptop with windows 10 my laptop wont recognize my garmin can you answer if you know a fix Thank you!
Wondering what "map type " to use for my older Garmin 800? I got it to work last year but no luck today!
The Edge 800 doesn't have a lot of storage space. I've loaded the Melbourne city maps "Garmin OSM (UTF-8)" which are around 40MB uncompressed successfully today as a test. gmapsupp.img copied into /Garmin on the 800 works.
@Shane Miller - GPLama Shane, thanks for your reply. I am getting a "corrupted disc" message. As I mentioned last year I was able to create ma for Denmark and Sweden downloaded them onto a micro SD card and they worked perfectly. Last night I was trying different Format options but no luck.
What format type should I choose for Garmin 830?
Go with bbbike.
I have a Garmin Zumo XT GPS. It is not a bicycle GPS, but rather a motorcycle GPS. I do use it while riding my bike. Can I download custom maps onto it?
I have no idea sorry. One for Garmin support, or maybe an online user forum.
Can these BBBike OSMs be used on traditional Garmin GPS' like the DriveSmart 61 - or are they only for bikes?
No idea sorry.
Shane, Can you do this same thing for a Garmin zumo 396 ??
I’m not familiar with that device.
It's a motorcycle specific Garmin.
Can you download these maps to Garmin Basecamp ? or does it have to get downloaded to the device itself.
So which file does one download from the bbbike file, ontrail, openfietsite or opentopo?
Try the bbike ones first. They work for me.
Are the maps you download from bbbike routable?
Yes
Hi, I live in Western Cape, South Africa and have an old Garmin Edge 800. What is my best option in your opinion for map? I can buy a blank =- 4 GB Card.
That'll be one for Garmin support.
Is it still worth it to buy Garmin Edge 530 at the moment?
I'm still using one daily (along side the 830/1030/1040). It's a good unit for what it does.
Would I need to do this with the 840 as well?
No. The x40 series comes with global maps that are pretty good. Map management is done with Garmin Express via USB cable on Mac/PC.
@@gplama cool thanks
Would this work on my Edge 800?
You’ll have to find very small map packs for that unit. It doesn’t have a lot of storage.
@@gplama Did the one England only map and it worked perfectly, thanks.
Just put Topographic full map on my microSD card and it's working on my edge 800.
When using this free map I can't navigate to an address or intersection. Do I need to get the Garmin made maps if I want to do so? THank yoU!
It may depend on which Garmin Edge unit and which mapset you're using.
@@gplama I'm using the edge 830 from Japan. But I'm in Canada now and I'd like to navigate to an address or intersection. I downloaded my province's map [british-columbia.osm.garmin-bbbike-latin1.zip].
This is a copy of correspondence with Garmin Europe. I am considering buying a Garmin Edge 1040 whilst I am in Australia, but as I spend a lot of time in Europe will I be able to download the European Map and if so is there an additional cost for the Europe Map. I already have an Edge 820 and an Edge 830 and I have the European maps on both of those devices and my computer. So would I be able to simply connect my New Edge 1040 to my computer and upload the European maps ? I believe there is a way of transferring data from one Edge to another Edge if this is so would I be able to transfer my European maps. If it is not possible to add my European map to the Edge 1040 would you let me know that it is not possible. At present I am in Australia but spend most of my time in the UK. I would really appreciate your help
GARMIN REPLY
Thank you for contacting Garmin,
From looking into this for you if you were to purchase the device from Australia then it wouldn't come with the Europe maps, also not able to transfer them from different device. you would have to purchase this again.
The Garmin information does not correspond with your detailed information. WHO IS RIGHT ???
The Edge 1040 series has access to GLOBAL maps from Garmin at no cost. These are managed (added/removed) by using Garmin Express on a Mac or PC. Feel free to reach out to Garmin with this information so they can correct their reply (and possibly replies to others in the future).
For reference, see the section "Which Maps Are Included With the Edge 1030 Plus and 1040 Series?" on the Garmin website: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=1sYQRWxUh55jMyl1pGo2Z6
Does climbpro and free climbpro work with these maps?
ClimbPro, yes. The x30 and prior don’t have that in free ride. For the x40 series global maps are available for free via Garmin Express. Best use to use with the newer Edge units.
@@gplama thanks for the reply, I asked because the 540 can't have all of Europe installed at once and the way garmin set it up without manually managing the files there are cases where you can't have neighboring countries installed (France/Germany for example). Really they need to add map management to connect and allow either per Country or multiple EU zones
does anyone know how this relates to the 540?
The 540 comes with global maps you can swap in/out using Garmin Express on Mac/PC with a USB cable.
@@gplama yes it does but having trouble with space to load Western Europe maps
Does this work with my Garmin Edge 800?
Yes, but you have to select the smaller map types/areas due to the limited space on that unit.
As I said before I've got all the Australian map pack's working on my edge 800 I put a Garmin directory on a microSD card and put the img file in it. I did change the file name as was explained in the video.
Just one thing for some reason it would only work with one img file on card at a time but all work just one at a time.
For garmin map at least 530 model?
It depends on what maps/areas you want. These maps will work with all the models I list.
It doesn't work on Garmin 540.
Doesn’t really need it as the x40 range have free global maps within Garmin Express.
@@gplama You need to put in the description it doesn't work on the 540.
You are wrong in thinking the quality is the same with different maps. Openmtbmap was specifically designed for MTBing, includes the trail difficulty.
Let’s look further into getting them working on the x40 range then.
@@gplama That would be awesome!
Can u do a new video for the edge 540, where due to the stupid free climbpro data in the maps u can only have one region of ur mapping on it... So it comes with full EU 2022.11, but when u update maps in express u can only put one EU region on it... & the regions are split vertically across the EU, which is so dumb, especially if u live in certain countries u can't have neighbouring countries that u would ride to/through because they are in the next region.
Need to be an option for maps without free climbpro so u can have 2 regions... So disappointed in 540. DON'T BUY IT, get 840 or another brand
Garmin scam
I bought 1040 and need new maps, thanks for the help GPLama !!! Love your work 🤍🤍
What format should I use for a Garmin 520? In the USA? My 520 (not 520 plus). Thanks.
I use Garmin BBBike (Latin 1) on my 520. Remember you have to rename the gmapssupp to gmapbmap. Save the orignal gmapbmap 1st incase you somehow mess up.
@@westcoastlife9659 Thanks. I found a format that works. I think I had the map zoomed in too much, and there were no features on it. Trial and error I finally got it. Using it all the time now.
Great video! will this work on Garmin Edge 1000? thanks
Likely. I don’t have an Edge 1000 to test.
