    Interesting design choices, this one doesn't look like your typical North Korean kitsch pastel colored building. I dig the minimalistic look though, It's even more minimalistic than your average story because of the lack of publicity posters all over the walls (at least I didn't see any).

    Very interesting.
    As a question, the presence of makeup and cosmetics suggests to me that there are salons in which high status women have their hair and makeup expertly applied, such as exist in Beijing or Shanghai.
    In China such salons are often near the stores that sell the makeup so that ladies out shopping can accomplish both goals of shopping and being coiffed and expertly made up.
    Is there a salon near the Daesong store ?
    In China prestigious brands of alcohol and cosmetics are often used as gifts, and there are often references to gift wrapping such items in higher status shops.
    Alcohol tends to be a gift amongst men, and cosmetics clearly a gift for women.
    Sometimes the gift wrapping itself in China is almost an art.
    Are there such gift wrapping services in Pyongyang ?

    • @ZoeDiscovers
      @ZoeDiscovers  Před 2 lety +8

      Thanks for your interesting questions once again Charles! Always keeping me on my toes with these. So firstly, I have never heard of gift wrapping services and professional make up services in Pyongyang but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Also, it should be noted that these professional brands have not deliberately "set up shop" in Pyongyang - it will be imported from China and so I can't see Chanel sending in a professional after a space in the mall or a salon next door. The homemade Korean brands, however, may do this.
      Indeed, they do have such gift-giving culture such as alcohol for men and cosmetics for women. I always recommend these items if people want to bring gifts for the guides :)

      @@ZoeDiscovers Thanks for the response.
      I like your videos because they do not focus on the politics and policies of the DPRK but rather focus on the everyday life issues of what can be observed about Pyongyang and the DPRK.
      And things like clothing, makeup, alcohol are not so fraught with ideology so that an expert Korean speaking foreigner like you can observe and gain insights.
      Also, because the DPRK tour guides are so often women, you can give insights into the lives of women in a society in which the vast bulk of formal power is held by men.

    Like always, a great video! Very modern store.
    I have a question, I know foreigners are allowed to buy food, souvenirs, alcohol, clothes, etc... but are technological products allowed to buy and then bring out of the DPRK?
    Curious how at 04:33 they use a random font for Sony and Philips, looks funny hahaha, but later in the video they use the real logos for other brands.

    • @ZoeDiscovers
      @ZoeDiscovers  Před 2 lety +10

      Yes of course it’s ok. Actually anything you buy in North Korea you can take out again - but some of it won’t be of much use. For example the North Korean made mobile phones work on a different frequency so won’t work outside DPRK 🤷🏼‍♀️

    I'm just so confused by this contrast from what the people who have left DPRK have to say about it.
    Why would a country, who has clearly communicated on several occasions that they are self sustainable and reliable and do not wish to have sanctions with anyone, feel the need to produce "inviting" videos?
    They clearly are not open to the outside world besides the few pons they are using. Im just not sure why...folks can say she's not in cahoots all they want, but something is definitely weird about her being so "free" as a foreigner in this Notorious Hermit Kingdom and having such "recent" footage.

      Many people from the communist countries who traveled abroad were offered lots of money and permanent citizenships by the US govt and its allies if they defected and agreed to appear in videos designed to smear their countries. Scripts were given to them to recite during interviews. These people left their countries with valid passports hence the idea that they were not allowed to travel, or that they escaped, was a lie.
