For some reason I liked the beast mode more than I liked the double spirit mode. It is just me?

Nope, not just you don’t worry. I loved the Beast Spirits but seeing them mixed with the Human spirits makes them look really clunky and weird looking. I much preferred Emperor Greymon and Magna Garurumon as their mega forms (except for the part where it makes the others completely useless).
