  • Slow tutorial is at 1:11. Three finger roll versions are at 2:34. Theme song (written by Paul Henning) of The Beverly Hillbillies sitcom is in the key of A, so the 1st string is kept open to play the role of the 5th banjo string.
The melody has to be modified a bit as there are no low notes (down to E) below the fourth string, even if it is in low G tuning. First round is played only by the thumbpick (you may use flatpick too), then the index fingerpick is added for the off-beats and also middle and ring finger for the RIM bursts for emphasis. See the video at • RIM burst with fingerp... for the tutorial of RIM strum.
At the end of each verse (behind the spoken lyrics e.g. oil that is, black gold, Texas tea) there is played the hammer-on by the index finger at 1st fret of C string.
Then the slow tutorial follows at 1:11 and finally the bluegrass version starting at 2:34 closes this video.
Ten years ago I uploaded two videos on tenor banjo in open G tuning DGdg (capo 2 to move into the key of A). This is similar tuning to BEbe ukulele tuning shown by James Hill at
