Patreon: / danielhiteshew I recently tried putting an air stone in my HOB filter instead on in my tank, but within a very short time, I had all the fish in the tank at the surface, gasping for "air".
Dan, you mentioned the water in the filter and coming off the filter (the ripple area in front) was as gas exchanged as it was going to get. I agree. I'm guessing the air stone aided with the ripples, but maybe just as important, helped circulate the water from the bottom of the tank to the top (in tank circulation, not just around, but bottom to top). Perfect placement on the air stone. Tank looks like an example of whats important vs whats not.
Thanks. I just read up on gas exchange today and learned some important new info I've never heard mentioned before, so look forward to video about it very soon. I now understand why this didn't work.
More air is definitely not always a good thing. It’s all about the balance. I love when people experiment and observe. It’s how we grow and learn as hobbyists. Thank you I look for calm active fish. I once over did the air. Live and learn.
Firstly I love science 🧪 love it! I have a planted tank. During the day the plants produce o2 creating a lift of co2 . surface ripples can be very gentle like a rain drop or a fish surfacing or wind…. So I don’t run the air stone during the day. I make my plants work a little. At night I turn the air stone on because the plants are now using o2 and which creates a dense o2 water on the top trapping heavier co2 below. The stone then breaks that up to rise co2 to the top and remove it.
The exchange mostly happens at the surface so I'm led to believe ..so an airstone near the bottom is good as it circulates the water from the deep to get re oxygenated from the surface..The bubbles dont really do much other than lift the water from the bottom so it gets oxygenated at the surface . Im not good at explaining things but it makes sense to me. lol
Hmm. Prehaps because the HOB within itself its also doing some sort of gas exchange, by adding the air stone inside you're removing something beneficial? Just a guess, I was just searching if someone done it lol, since I was literally about to do it too, luckily I watched this video first.
Airstone lift CO2 laden water up to the surface to exchange it out for O2 which is then caused to sink by the return action of the now falling water. Moving your airstone away from your filter would make it mre effective. placing it near/under the temple plant would be the best placement for total tank gas exchange.
I topped my (2) upstairs tanks off today as well. My (10) gallon is a bare bottom. The Mollies eat so much that there is hardly anything to clean. I got the (3) Black Mollies last weed as a replacement for my (3) dead ones from good ole PetSmart:-) This time I added SeaChem's Paraguard for a week. I notice their excrement is no longer white. I wonder how effective Paraguard is for internal parasites or if I need to add an envelope of API General Cure? I'm really sorry my female that gave birth to (4) live and (3) dead is gone:-( She was such a pretty velvety black. I stuffed my Aqueon HOB w/ (2) Mr Clean white sponges. I am going to get some Black Lyretail Mollies next. I have a (20) and (30) gallon cycled tank in the basement. These cheap filter sponges are nice bc they come as twins and you can put one into another tank for quick cycling of course. My heaters are set at 79 deg Fahrenheit. I don't use a light on my tanks so I am hoping to create some algae outdoors for my Mollies to eat. Mollies also like spirulina so I will have to find a food w/ the highest content. If anyone has economical suggestion for food please chime in::-)
I use airstones in all my tanks...usually put it away from my HOB filter. Q...I see that you don't have a top...does your Guppies or any other fish jump out of tank.
I haven't lost any from this tank yet, but it does happen sometimes. I don't keep fish that are known "jumpers", and guppies are the only type of "surface" fish that I feel ok doing it with. Killifish and other surface fish will definitely jump out. Gouramis too.
I’ve had my GBR pair for about a month now and I run my tank at 82, with a nice big air stone ( as I know warmer water is crucial to GBR). I often worry about how my other fish are dealing with the higher temperature, particularly my neons but I see you also have some and your temp is somewhat higher than mine which is helping me worry a little less!
At 82 there's not much worry especially with Neons. They do really well, as do guppies, at 78. Higher temperatures will increase their metabolism shortening their life span a bit.
James Hande thanks for taking the time to reply. I’m new to this and I’ve made my fair share of mistakes already but I’m enjoying it no end. After all this research, buying plants, testing kits and a lot of prime, I’d hate to kill them with too much heat! Again, thanks for your reassurance.
How do I get ammonia lvs down? My water is fine till I seem to add the instant ocean. I test my water and get 0.50 reading for the past week. I have down small water changes all the way to 75% water change. I'm scared my fig 8 puffer won't tolerate the ammonia lvs much longer. I do use seachem prime everytime. I have 2 filters running with bio wheels. What am I missing?
Are you using tap water? Sometime tap water has chloramine, which is chlorine bound with an ammonia. It doesn't evaporate fast like chlorine (which is why they use it) and it will show a positive test for ammonia. Try testing your tap water and see what you get. That's odd that your oxygen runs out so fast. I can leave my tank filter off for days, maybe longer (never tried it) and my fish are just fine. My tank is less stoked with fish than yours though. Maybe that has something to do with it.
AirStone in HOB think works with a AquaClear filter (Or similar design) cuz the media doesn't get in the way of the water flow. I thought the ram only needed 82 to 85 Degrees? Years ago I kept mine at 82. Either way he looks happy.
you can have a billion bubbles and if they dont make it to the top of the tank they dont do anything it when the bubbles pop at the surface is when it oxygenates the water
Actually each bubble adds surface area for gas exchange and oxygenation, which is why small bubbles are better more surface area for the volume of air. The accumulated surface area of bubbles is more then the surface of your tank. If it was all bout circulating and surface agitation then a power head would be a much better option
@@306varminthunter5 it has nothing to do with air bubbles at all it has to do with a surface agitation of the water you can have a power filter and as long as it ripples the top of the water and agitates it that oxygenates the water and they have no bubbles at all

So you think that entire column of water will be depleted or recharge with oxygen in a matter of minutes? I think you need to think some more.
I'm down to three tanks now but at one time had 27 and I never used an air pump, or heaters. Those were large cichlids and oscars though, so....

i would really like to know what that "tree" is sticking out that aquarium. very cool root system.
That's Temple Plant or Swamp Weed (Hygrophila)
Co2 is higher in density… making it heavier than o2 … a good example of this is heat trapped in the atmosphere which then leads to smoggy air.
Airstone lift CO2 laden water up to the surface to exchange it out for O2 which is then caused to sink by the return action of the now falling water. This is a really dumb question but what is the plant in that tank? It's looks amazing like a bush.
It's Temple Plant or Swamp Weed if you prefer (Hygrophila)
Nice tank! So it’s ok to have air stone and live plants? Can I run it in the day only?
As long as you don't inject CO2, an air stone isn't going to hurt your plants as far as I can tell. I run them 24/7 in the tanks that have them.

Did you move the air stone from the bottom of the tank to the HOB or did you add a 2nd one to the HOB?
I moved the air stone. When it was in the HOB, it was the only air stone in the tank.
Is it ok to put the stone and filter on the same side long term? Or is it better to put the stone on the opposite side of the tank?
As long as you have good water circulation, I don't think it matters.
