Hey thanks for the heads up. I realized this later as I got even more familiar with the camera. I think that I may make another video to compare the two. IMO the loss of quality is important but depends on your end platform.
If you added some good lighting you can expose for the windows and lower your ISO to get way more resolution and better color. But, you already know that.
My man! 5:00 you are the only dude in the whole yoo toob universe that clearly said and told me what Recording Setting and Frame Rate was/is to a new Sony menu user... that sh*t was confusin' ... too many sake and naked hot bath makes translation to simple use "boom" 120 fps set/save to a more confusin' unnecessary set up options. Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that this 20 minute video with detail failed to provide you with one step that most if not all people understand how to do. 🤷🏾♂️
I am glad I came across your page could not find anything on +120 SLO mo shooting , im going to need so fire luts for color grading I really like that glossy look
You can create you're own custom menu and the Sony menu really isn't as messy as it used to be. And this is coming from a long term GH5 user who has moved over. Also SQ isn't best way to shoot 120p
Thanks for your comments. I like the custom menus but I just wanted to show people how to get in and out of slow motion in a basic way. You are defiantly right about getting better slow motion.
I noticed shooting in 4k in S AND Q. when you get to final cut, trying to slow or speed up a 4k clip it comes out glitchy , however shooting in 1080 p 120 fps you can slow down a clip or speed the clip up and its smooth however shooting in 1080 is not as glass as 4k so I guess when you shoot a scene shoot 2 takes in 4k and one take in 1080 120 fps so you won't miss the butter slow motion . shooting in 1080 120 you don't have to shoot in s and q at all.
In recording settings I only have an option for 24p and for the frame rate I don't have an option above 100fps. I have the same exact sony mark III camera. Does anybody know why this is the case? I don't think I need to do any software update.
Naff Media hey thanks for your question. You don’t need to be in a specific movie mode to shoot in slow motion. Those just control the look or colour of the footage not the frame rate.
Focusing is hard in slow motion because the image is much softer. The way I get around it is by using the focus peaking settings in the camera. The other thing is that when you are shooting at this speed things don't need to be in perfect focus all the time. IT actually helps with the effect IMO
Here you go www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07D7K5L9D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - This cage is super dope and really handy. Thanks for your thoughts!
Putting this comment here as well as in my reply to someone earlier. If I want 120 FPS I have to go to NTSC mode. I see that if I'm shooting in PAL mode in the UK that going to NTSC for the 120FPS means I will have to format my card or delete the footage already on it, even if I take the card out before the NTSC reboot and put it back in after, unless I'm mistaken. Seems I may have to use a seperate card just to go for the slo-motion shot that I need to film film for an upcoming project I have. A bit messy, not sure if there's another way I can do all this without having to use a seperate card or risk deleting the other footage that I'll be shooting that day, or just go to 100 FPS?
Hey thank you for the question. If you follow this particular method the clips have already been conformed to slow motion inside of the camera. So all you have to do is import them into FCPX and they will be smooth and sexy.

I have a question for you, I'm about to buy my first Sony A7III monitor and I'm breaking my head which one to pick, so, I thought will be a great idea to ask the professional. Since I'll be filming mostly outside and the sun here is extremely strong, it will have to be bright + I'm looking for a touch screen monitor with a super good focus picking, last thing will be happy if the battery will not end too fast, can you please recommend a model or 2? Hi Tristan, when you go to the S&Q settings and adjust them as you did, is it related to the S&Q on the dial on top of the camera (where you choose your mode M, A, S, 1-2, S&Q)??? Thank you so much in advance
this was super helpful but question when I film in these settings will it playback slow-motion on the camera? Hi! Thank you for the tutorial. I used all the same settings but when I put the footage into premiere, I don't get slow-motion at all. Would you be able to assist me with that? Thank you!!
so, if i'm shooting and on that specific location of shooting I may want to slow the clip down in post do i need to change my camera to s&q or can it stay at movie mode?
Hey Tristan thanks for the great tutorial ! just wanted a bit of help on this - iam shooting a few samples with the a7iii on the record setting of 100p100m (iam using PAL) ... the s&q settings for both record and frame rate are set at 25. i have chosen to go with the 100p100m option since its a better bit rate than using the s&q for slow mo. But when i play the footage back on the camera , it doesnt seem to show me that its been shot in slomo (100fps)! what do you reckon the issue is? would i be able to view it only in the edit? or is there some setting that i seem to have missed? thanks
Hey thanks for watching and also thank you for the great question. When you record with these settings the camera captures everything in 100p and plays but as such. Once you bring it into your editor it can be slowed down in there. So no worries at all.
I use PP7 for most of my video capture with Cine3 or Rec 709. It really depends on the delivery of the project. If I'm under a time crunch I tend to use less flat settings because I have not time to CC. Whereas if I have the time I go with the SLOG or flatter settings.
