    Hi Sameer, that was a great video. It had cleared most of my doubts on EMBA. Is the EMBA program at ISB applicable to someone with a pure technical background without managerial experience? Does it help the individual to transition to Product Management from a technical role?

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  Před 3 lety +1

      EMBA programs are a little more tricky compared to regular full-time MBA, when it comes to their perceived value. The best way to find out is to check with your HR team if getting that qualification will give you a leg up in the race. Do the same with HR folks from the company you want to target as well. That'll give you an idea of whether the investment would be worth it.

    Question, if accepted into a top tier EMBA program, is it still plausable or acievable to switch industry by applying for mba graduate schemes independently? Of course in this case the EMBA will be self funded or funded through a loan.

      EMBA programs are typically marketed towards working professionals, many of whom are sponsored by their current companies. So it wouldn't work in the bschool's interest to show this degree as a career change tool, as it would conflict with their sponsors' interests.

  • @bonnyphilip8153
    @bonnyphilip8153 Před 4 lety

    Hi Sameer thanks for the video.In order to pursue an international MBA, you will have to leave your job in India. Are there eMBAs that are fulltime in that case and dont require you to be working part-time? eg: does INSEAD allow this for the GEMBA course?
    On the other hand, is being in your early 30s a hindrance for regular MBAs?

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  Před 4 lety

      EMBA programs by design are part-time. We've worked with several candidates who're over 30 and aiming for full-time MBA. You'll find some stories on our blog. As long as you're familiar and comfortable with the risks/rewards, you can consider it. A full-time degree has better market value than an EMBA, specially for career changers.

      You haven't shared the reason for quitting your job, without having an alternative in hand. MBA application process takes over a year, as you might know. Which means it wouldn't be a good idea to just wait for an MBA to turn the tide. Specially when you're unsure about what you want to use it for. Better to search for a job first, and get back into the corporate world. And then continue thinking about where you want to take your career, whether an MBA is really needed etc.

      We've worked with several folks working in govt orgs with similar aspirations. But we have to point out that it gets tough to manage a big career change after 30. You'll need to plan at a more granular level, about the career path you want and then evaluate whether an MBA still figures on the list.

      Among the 3 (A/B/C) you've converted the best one. Good work there. But none of those 3 would give you an edge over someone who's completed a 2-year PGP from those IIMs (given the difference in selectivity between their two formats). Or for that matter others just like you've who've already got an international MBA. European MBA programs are more cost effective for mature (30+) students. Indian salaries have grown to a level where it's not to difficult to service an education loan on an INR salary, if you can get the right role. Of course, you're better aware of your personal priorities and constraints than anyone else. So take the call based on what you think is right.

    Not everyone is able to forgo their salaries, opportunity costs and pay a premium for a top MBA program.

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  Před 3 lety

      Depends on what you want to use the degree for. While the brand is important, the format of the program matters too if you're looking for a big career change. A top EMBA program can cost as much as (if not more than) a full-time MBA. What you save in an EMBA program is the opportunity cost.

Thus, I wanted to use the MBA/EMBA as a platform to discover what people in these roles do and have it easier to move around post graduate studies. I had preferred the EMBA route as the opportunity costs from salaries is significant and the guys I network with are > senior managers with some experience in each of the fields that I had mentioned earlier. Brochures are marketing tools. Given the intense competition in the industry, most bschools tend to oversell what their programs can do. We see many full-time MBA grads from top schools also scratching their heads after completing the course, since they still don't know where they want to go. Which is why we suggest being clear about what a program can and cannot do for you, before you sign on the dotted line. Of course, if you've done your homework well, you will not have much to worry about.

      What you've found from your research is correct. All the good MBA programs will ask for experience and a good GMAT or GRE score. Bypassing them to get into a mediocre program won't be a good idea. Why are you not looking for a job first, considering the career gap that you already have?

      @@MBACrystalBall Sir wouldn't it be better if I take an exam of GMAT/GRE and then apply to the top Universities as many of them don't require work experience.

      @MBACrystalBall  Před 4 lety

      We're not in favour of going for an MBA degree with zero experience. It'll end up being another theoretical degree that won't help. And even if you graduate from a good bschool, the question about such a long career break will still come up. Do you have a good reason to justify it?

      @@MBACrystalBall Actually I have done internship under a Senior Counsel from 2014 till 2016. And thereafter I went for Coaching for Judiciary in 2017-18. Does it justify the gap !?

    • @MBACrystalBall

      Internships don't count. And while it may be common in India, it's unusual for international candidates to take a career break after undergrad. That's why we think it's important for you to not keep delaying things further. You'll keep losing out on important and formative years of your career.

      Part-time/evening programs are typically positioned for working (and often sponsored) candidates. So bschools cannot aggressively promote their careers services as an added benefit to such students. The EMBA candidates we know who've managed career changes are those who've proactively managed to reach out to prospective companies.
      For the full-time Fellows programs, reach out directly and check with them directly, as OPT rules are also being reviewed along with their focus on H1B candidates. Best to get such updates directly from the schools rather than relying on third parties.

    dear sir ,in your online articles you mention isb ,iim abc executive mbas .How do you compare and rank them with XLRI GMP Executive MBA as XLRI is a top brand.Also why in india Executive mba isnt seen to be as valuable as compared to a full time mba.Also if someone is from a core area for eg a teaching profession ,will executive mba help him to transition into a corporate job.

      XLRI is a top brand when it comes to the traditional 2-year MBA. Like most top schools, it also offers a range of other management degrees, including the EMBA format. However, it hasn't gathered as much momentum and buzz as the other names you've listed.

    Hi, I have 6.5 yrs of experience. I am planning to give GMAT by May. Is 1yr MBA in ISB a good option than a 2yr MBA from other Colleges?

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  Před 4 lety

      In most of the top two-year MBA programs, the average work experience in the class is around 5 years at the start of the program. The average at ISB is also around the same. With your current experience, you'd have 7.5 yrs at the start of the program, which pushes you slightly away from the median. Of course, the RoI from a 1-year MBA looks better since the costs are lower. You could consider ISB, if you're only looking at an India based career. If not, there are plenty of 1-year options in Europe where the average age and experience is more aligned with your profile. How much are you expecting on the GMAT?
