"A girl worth fighting for" is the last song in the movie because immediately after it stops, they reach the destroyed village, which turns out to be the village of the little girl who owned the doll.
The message couldn't be any louder: that little girl, who didn't ask to be put in the middle of any of this, is the real girl worth fighting for.

During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family.
Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.
This is further backed up by how she's sitting at the foot of the statue before the sequence begins.

I mean, she did get a big sword wound and needed a man to treat her and prevent her from dying. I'm actually surprised she was able to move so swiftly in the end fight without reopening the wound and struggling through the pain.
Not to mention, without Shang's training, she would have been nothing to Shan Yu. It was Shang's training, Mulan's strong individual will, and her quick thinking that helped her achieve victory. There's more to it than "saving the world on her own." Because that's not how it is for real humans, regardless of sex. Help, humility, and hardwork are what make for the best results.

The line about the recruits being "pale" in I'll Make a Man out of you is probably referencing how in many Asian countries throughout history, being pale was (and is) a sign of being of privilege and wealth because they wouldn't have to spend time in the hot sun doing the manual labor that less wealthy people would have to do which would tan their skin. TLDR; Shang is calling the recruits sheltered, whimps and weak, saying they have probably never fought or worked a day in their lives.
Also the "big deal" about Mulan being found out is that women weren't allowed to join the military as it was seen as only a man's job (women were supposed to stay home and take care of the children) and it would be seen as dishonour on the Fa family for Mulan to be found out.
Love the channel and your work! Since we're on a Disney spree, I would recommend 'Enchanted'! It's very underrated but I feel like you would have fun with it :)

It just gets everything wrong from Chinese culture to even the original ballad that they claimed the movie was based off of. No where in the ballad did it say that mulan had superhuman powers (“chi” in the movie, which isn’t even what chi actually is in the culture), in the ballad she was just a normal girl who stepped up when her FATHER was drafted (not for China or the emperor). She served her time and when she was offered a more successful role in the army she chose to live out her days as a war vet instead. Only when her battalion went to visit mulan did they realize that mulan was actually a woman (she successfully hid her identity for over 10 years in the ballad).
Long story short, the live action movie isn’t worth it in my opinion.

7:09 they used to believe, in the past, that women with larger hips and waist were more likely to get pregnant. So thats why Mulan being "skinny" is seen as fault, Also, they believed that "bigger" women were more likely to have boys, when skinny women were more likely to have girls, and lesser kids. For example: 100 years ago only men were allowed to smoke cigarettes in public, it was a no-go for woman (not to mention that they weren't allowed to vote). They stayed at home, raised their kids, made food etc. but weren't allowed to stand up for themself. It was normal and women accepted it (not always, there were exceptions). I know nobody want's to hear that but that is the hard truth, it was brutal.

the older animated movies are super great because everything around that time was still largely hand drawn and animated and has that special touch to it that you dont have these days. Pretty much everything nowadays is done with computer programs, which is great because it cuts down on the costs and time it takes to animate but definitely misses that special level of quality you can only get with hand drawn animation.

    @Cantmakeupmymindonaname Před 2 lety +17

    1) I did not care for the live action mulan.
    2) mulan is an ancient legend in china. It was a poem/written story that the Chinese turned into alot of different plays. As that is the case many of the things (about gender roles) that confused you were taken from the original ancient views. Such as woman were beheaded for trying to impersonate as a soldier (or any type of mans job, excluding the rice fields). The songs try to help you understand. Sons are to be soldiers, Daughters are for baring sons . This leads into the realm of arranged marriages and not being allowed to talk to men outside your family.
    3) The fan flipping the sword 25:22 is an actual thing. High ranking Chinese fighters (i dont remember the names) have something called fan dances which are just them learning how to fight with fans (usually in slow motion = dance) you should totally look it up!

Please, don't watch the live action movie. The animated one taught a generation of girls that being strong didn't equal being a man, that they could be their own hero by being just who they were. For exemple, the fact that she only has a fan to fight Shan-Yu is very symbolic. The fan against the sword is feminity against masculinity. (I mean, the word vagina literally comes from the latin word vagina, which meant "sheath", so I'll let you guess what the sword is in this analogy lol) For a moment there, she feels helpless, but she decides to fight with what she has. And she wins because it is enough. She's not lacking anything. This movie taught me I could fight my own battles. The live action movie spat on everything the animated movie stood for. (I'm probably being overly dramatic, because this movie means a lot to me, but yeah...)

    • @OsSas3

Also, Mulan ALWAYS uses witt over brute force. She's not the greatest fighter and I love that, she's not a Mary Sue who after a song is able to do everything better than anyone, she still needs training and she defeated Shang Yu twice because of her mind. Your main character doesn't have to be the strongest of all to be a great protagonist and Mulan live action didn't get it.

The animated Mulan is a classic with a great message and representation of womanist and queer issues (although it’s depiction of Chinese culture is certainly flawed). The Live Action is none of those things.
It’s full of human rights violations behind the scenes including supporting the genocide going on in China and full of nationalist propaganda since it changes the idea of protecting the people to just simply protecting the emperor no matter what evil he’s done. Plus, to add insult to injury, it’s literally just a bad movie. It’s got some gorgeous aesthetics/cool fights and the cultural representation isn’t as muddled as is was in the animation but those are the only good things I can really say about it. They undercut the main messages by making Mulan essentially magical so she doesn’t have to work for anything, took out/cut down the vast majority of the supporting cast of beloved characters while simultaneously managing to leech the life out of Mulan’s character, got rid of the songs which are literally some of Disney’s most iconic ones, failed to achieve the gravity of the original depictions of war, failed to establish the familial bonds that drive the entire plot, need I go on? I would absolutely not recommend it.

So excited that you reacted to Mulan! She is one of my favourite Disney princesses, and the one I respect the most. She is so brave and courageous, specially while being a woman at a time when women were seen as the lowest class. Her and Tiana are my favourites! This is my childhood :D

Mulan is my FAVOURITE Disney princess!!! She's such a badass. I love the OG film and I actually really loved the live action.
If you like Wuxia films likes Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Hero, you'll love the live action. They went with a more serious, action film take. A lot of people hate on it because they expected it to be an exact copy paste of the animated. But there's no singing and no Mushu. If you can look past that and accept it for what it is, I think you'll really enjoy it!!! 😊

The only good thing about shan yu is that in his country women are seen just as valuable as men in war and so he didn’t question it when mulan revealed herself he’s not disgusted she’s a woman just shocked that it’s the same person but still treats her like a worthy opponent

There are some jokes in here that are, eh, borderline for Asian-Americans (I'm half), but I'm sure most of those problems would go over the heads of non-American Asians.
Despite the iffy jokes, most Asian-Americans (including me) still like the movie overall because (especially when this movie came out), we are still pretty lacking in representation in American movies.
Here's a big difference between Chinese and Japanese:
In ancient China, a woman who tried to join the military was put to death. In ancient Japan, women were free to become warriors or even samurai, but few women chose to because they generally weren't taken very seriously by the men. In military camps, female warriors were made to perform the most menial tasks.
Mulan was played by Ming Na Wen, who went on to do other stuff you might be familiar with (Agents of SHIELD, The Mandalorian).
About the big guy: in Asian cultures, they don't really see a difference between a fat person and a person with big muscles.
Do not watch the live-action Mulan.

Big facts.. I hate it when I just have to cook outdoors, or start bbq-ing.
    🤣🤣🤣
The pale lyric in the song, was to insinuate that they weren't very manly. Meaning most of their time was spent indoors, not getting dirty, and not out in the fields under the sun, doing 'real mans work'. So it was a way of calling them coddled, spoiled, pampered, un-manly, brats lol.
Loved the reaction! Mulan is my favorite Disney Princess.

Her granny is my favorite character in this movie. XD
According to the culture, only men hold true value, bringing honor and mainly serve the family. It's been like that in China for thousands of years. Mulan's father was the only male alive in the family, so he was the one to go to war. He knew he wouldn't survive, but he was still going to go, just so his family could be honored.
The epic music came in when Mulan made the decision to go to war in her father's place.
There was a car sound effect because Mushu's back scraped the ground when he was thrown.
The reason Shan Yu only said "The soldier from the mountain." is because the Huns had women soldiers, too. They didn't hold China's prejudice, so Shan Yu only saw her as another soldier to defeat.
Do NOT watch the live action one. It screws the story up.

They say that this movie has one notable mistake. At those times only the emperor had the right to wear yellow (which is obvious), and if anybody non-regal was caught wearing this color, they could be easily executed. However, there is at least one character with the signature color yellow, and it is Ling (this color is present in all his outfits)
