I've always thought that a "Pick Tool" command in the same vein as "Pick Block" would be really sweet. Especially in the new era of added functionality to the hoes and other tools. Imagine looking at a log block on a tree, hitting the "Pick Tool" button, and getting an axe in your hand.

6:20 when talking about the tools and weapons selection, my immediate thought was that it needs to be stress-tested. What happens if someone completely fills their inventory with tools/weapons? Does it matter if they are the same tool (same material and enchantments if any) and left unnamed? Would a scroll bar appear or would the list go completely off the screen? Would items that have the same selections be grouped together? I really like that the durability seems to be visible in this selection wheel, as well. That would be really important when working on a big build where you can chew through several of the same tool. Maybe people wouldn't usually have a reason to completely fill their inventory with tools, but stress-tests are more meant for the extremes that people do when goofing around and being curious anyway.
I really like most of these ideas, and it was great how people using controllers and pocket edition were considered. I've tried bedrock edition when playing with some friends, and I found the ease of utilizing the controls really went a long way. It was a major adjustment (for me at least), so it's nice seeing people take it into consideration for the many players who don't get to have the choice of using a keyboard with all our fancy hotkeys and mouse.

    • @michaelcherokee8906
      @michaelcherokee8906 Před rokem +1

There is actually a way for any of the three major devices that Minecraft can be played on to use a keyboard. On consoles, they all have USB ports, plug a keyboard into the back of your Xbox boom easy done. On tablets or phones it requires what's called a jump cable, which is a (usually very short) USB to micro USB, Type C, or Apple converter cord. Theyre slightly hard to find but cheap and such a great help if you want to connect a mouse or keyboard to a tablet/cellular device. Obviously I realize that most people using handheld devices wont want to go that route, and console users will find it a pain, but is is an OPTION, it's available, and that is what's important.

Ok, this is really cool, and I think I have some good ideias that solve some of the issues X mentioned in the video
Regarding the customizable groupings mentioned at the end, I believe a good solution would be just using datapacks. Assuming the item groups that set what shows up on the wheel are stored in a json file (or something like that), a datapack would just add a similar file with the new groupings (which would override the originals when necessary). Not officially adding a customizer UI or something like that, which could be overwhelming, but still allowing more experienced players to customize the groupings as they prefer.
For the hotkey, I think using the mouse wheel button is perfect, because it already has a similar function that fits the game really well (pick block) - the selection GUI, then, would only show up when you press the mouse wheel without looking at any blocks... that way, no new button mappings are required.
(after writing this I realized X had the same idea... I don't think backing away is an issue though, the player could just look a bit to the side lol)
Also worth mentioning - this is pretty much exactly how it works in Satisfactory... when you're in build mode with a building selected, holding "e" opens a wheel containing all the other buildings in that "group" (e.g. 1m, 2m and 4m foundations), and you can either select one by moving your mouse and releasing "e", or toggle through them by just pressing "e" repeatedly. There's also a separate wheel for the customizer (regular foundation, concrete foundation, asphalt foundation), and some other wheels in different parts of the game. Maybe there's some other interesting ideas to take from there....

This is a really elegant solution. One of my biggest issues with the current inventory is that you need to dedicate so much space to tools. With this change you could just have a designated tool box. It frees up inventory space and saves time.

    • @ThatFoxxoLeo
      @ThatFoxxoLeo Před rokem +10

Minecraft's tools have the same effect as Animal Crossing's tools pre New Horizons; you want to make sure that you have the tools to do things if they're spontaneous, but not literally everything or else your inventory becomes cluttered.
From just my memory, the tools I generally use are the sword, two pickaxes (silk touch and fortune), a shovel, an axe, a bow/crossbow, an offhand tool (totem, shield, or torch), and a hoe. Counting one for each (even for offhand tools where you might sometimes want to carry multiple, like totems or torch stacks), it's 8 slots, almost a third of your inventory.
While you're not going to use everything, it still sucks when you don't have access to a particular tool that you've made before, and so either you have to do something slower than you could be doing it, or have to go all the way to grab the tool and use it.

In sorta invalidates the idea of mutex enchants and picking a weapon type

I love this idea! I'm really tempted to crack open Visual Studio and throw together a fabric mod to make this, though there's some small modifications I'd probably make!
Minecraft uses a built in organization system to identify different blocks and items. I won't go into the details for obvious reasons, but perhaps a GUI that implements that existing system? So if you press the interact key while having a block selected (say Cobblestone) it will show any blocks in your inventory that match that type (including shulkers). So it'd show cobblestone, andesite, diorite, stone, stairs, walls, etc that match the block metadata. This also occurs with tools, armor, and certain items like foods.
Though also including a customizable option would be really cool. Perhaps the inclusion of a trinket like item that enables cycling and lets you set up X value of quick swaps? Just a thought!

Could even be both. If you have a shulker in your off hand, only that shulker is considered (even if it's not a dropper shulker). But if your off hand is not a shulker, your stacks are refilled from any dropper shulker in your inventory. That would also allow you to deactivate refilling, by placing any unrelated shulker into your off hand.
The advantage of only ever being able to refill from an off hand shulker is that there would be no confusion as to where the refill items would come from.

Absolutely perfect implementation of a concept. I think the middle button would work best, since already fewer people use it outside creative, and even in creative, the default if you're looking at a block could be that block, with the wheel bringing up the variations available as well, so someone could switch between them by just looking at a similar block. When not looking at a specific block, it would then do variations based on what is selected on the hot bar, and the other set of variations when crouched either way. Simple and easy to use for four potential sets of blocks to switch between.

What also could be a solution, is something i believe the mod quark (correct me if im wrong on this) imploments. Its a simpler idea thats easier to setup. Instead of having you using a inventory just to store things to swap into your hotbar, you could use the inventory as a hotbar itself! With a button press you swap from your current hotbar to another row in your inventory, basically making it so everything in your inventory is decently accesable when needed. You could have a hotbar with all your tools, and another row in your inventory is a hotbar with all your building blocks, potions, shulker boxes, etc.
This allows for quick and easy swapping, but as a dowside you would need to organize your inventory more.
You can also use this, and instead of swapping your entire hotbar with another row of your inventory, you could swap a singulair item in your hotbar with another item in that same collum.

This is certainly interesting, but I do have a couple concerns. First, as you mentioned, it takes up another button on a gamepad and I'm not sure I like either suggestion for how it would be bound. Second, how would it handle block categories that aren't a set of 8? Say, different wool colors? Leaves? Redstone supplies? Flowers? etc.
I do have a suggestion involving the bundle though. What if the bundle was given a new function? Instead of just storing 64 random jumbled up items, it could store one full hotbar? When you hold it in your offhand and hit the "swap offhand item" key it takes your hotbar and swaps it into the bundle, rather than putting the bundle in your main hand. Then, if you do it again, it would swap the items back out to where they were on your hotbar originally. Of course, if you refill your hotbar before doing that, it would be able to swap the two hotbars back and forth. It effectively doubles the hotbar space without taking a new key or even adding any new GUI players would have to get used to. Plus, since it takes up the offhand and requires rabbit hide (assuming that recipe sticks), it'll be relatively balanced since I know Mojang are worried about that.

Also, you should also add the list for the potions. But, I think the GUI is good enough by itself, so even just adding this without adding the shulker system or the new shulkers you speak of, would be a huge advantage.
I think that the new shulkers or the skill of taking items from them whitout putting them in the world would take out part of the challenge of managing them. It could simply be an optional gamerule in the world. Is one of those thing that feels that should be on the hand of the player.

As mentioned in the opening, the limitations of the inventory provide constraints for the player to navigate; this idea recognizes the constraints and builds a system for the player to evaluate their actions even more. Strategic questions arise like “should I include 2 weapons on my hot bar to be able to quickly switch, or bank on being able to swap fast enough and open up that spot for another useful item?” These decisions are not arbitrary, and leverage the players ability rather than an overpowered game mechanic.

This can be compared to the Toolboxes feature of the create mod

This perfectly describes the problem and proposes a simple solution that would easily fit the game. Well done!

a work around for the middle click button thing could be that if you already have the block you’re looking at in your hand, or if you just don’t have it at all, then it opens the new. this would make it so then you don’t have to look away every time :)

I understand where you are coming from and with the recognition that as we place blocks from the hotbar, moving items to the hotbar is where the additional time comes from, whether it's from the inventory to the hotbar or shulker boxes/chest, to the inventory and hotbar.
As such, it seems the solution needs to be about reducing that time of getting the block to the hotbar in order to place it, which this solution seems to offer the solution to.
However, often when building with similar blocks or variations of the same block type, we are frequently switching between them.
This solution seems to propose preparing the hotbar with different blocks and having the similar blocks and block variations in our wider inventory.
Generally when building we are blending similar block colours/texutures, or contrasting them, however, the variations in the pallet are often the same blocks being mixed and most of the time we aren't needing more than 9 available slots to build the section of the build we are working on.
In my opinion, this solution seems great for quick one-off/long term switches between items, however, when frequently switching between similar blocks while building the time you save in not having to open the inventory/place a shulker box, is gained back with the constant switching back and forth of the similar blocks.
As a secondary note, I don't feel the access to shulkers from within the inventory itself, feels vanilla or more so survival. From the survival/adventure aspect, it makes sense you would have to place the shulker in order to open it, I feel it would take away from the game, rather than add to.
I do think this would make a great mod that people would find useful, however, in my personal view, I don't believe it is the correct solution to the inventory issues itself.

To add to this, having thought a little more about it, perhaps the solution is not about Mojang adding something, however, instead player preparation.
Often times I find inventory issues in my builds stemming from the fact I have items I need for the build in it, despite not needing them at the current moment in time.
For example, the build I'm currently working on uses 42 different building blocks for the exterior.
Of those 42, 20 are for the first floor, 20 are for the second, and 2 are for the roof.
Of the 20 for the first floor, 9 are built a block out from the main walls, and 2 are only used in the first couple layers of the build.
Of the 20 on the second floor, 11 are built out from the main walls
These can be added to the build after the main walls have been built.
If prepared in advance, I can set up the resources required for the first floor, second floor, roof and extensions separately, prior to building. I can then fill up my hotbar with the varied building blocks for that section of the build, and add the additional stacks of those blocks to the inventory, provided I don't misplace a block, and have to switch to a tool, the only time I need to stop building is when I run out of blocks, and/or complete a section.
Sure there's prep time, however, with shulker boxes, this can be organised while gathering the materials for the build in the first place.
