  • 2019 marks the 30th year of operations that Paul Component Engineering of Chico, California has been in business. The company is renown for its beautiful CNC machined parts, ranging from brakes, drivetrain parts, stems, hubs, cockpit goodies and more. The humble Paul quick release was the first item off the production line way back in 1989, aka Paul's house at that time which lead to later developments such as front and rear derailleurs for 1990's era mountain bikes - an era also recognized for anodized aluminium parts... some of which were rather dodgy.
"Many years, bike shows, and parties later there’s an old Texaco warehouse with state-of-the-art machines humming inside and still some old hand operated ones used to build prototypes. There is still constant thrashing on bikes in Bidwell Park, one of the gnarliest mountain biking areas in the country, to test and improve components. Every last scrap of aluminum is 100% USA forged and every component is 100% USA made." - paulcomp.com
On the day before my journey to the 2019 GRINDURO! in Quincy, California, I reached out to Paul Price, founder of Paul Component Engineering, for a guided factory tour. Last-minute planning is ill-advised, but Paul, readying for his annual support of Grinduro with an aid station and more, kindly referred me to Travis T.
In this video, Travis T. takes me through the Paul Component facility from raw materials to CNC machining and so on. Paul himself makes a brief appearance in this video, and provides an abbreviated history of the company that cuts straight to the chase. Many thanks to Paul, Travis T., Haley, Brianna, Brett, the black kitty and everyone else I met during my visit. Thanks also to Billy of Echos Communication (echoscomm) for facilitating this tour.

I wouldn't have believed the love and excellence these parts are held to if I hadn't seen this video tour.

So cool that company is still around, they way they work, a guy who hand polishes your parts and a cute girl who packs them 👍

Thanks for that clip Jom. I often dream about owning a bike dripping with Paul components one day.
Likely a Black Mountain Cycles or Ritchey.
So something made by Paul, Tom and/or Mike.
    Cheers

And I can vouch that Paul sits there and answers questions! I sent a question over messenger and I had to confirm ‘that Paul?’, when he answered. 🤣 That is serious commitment to your product💪🏻. Still love my Love levers and Motolite V-brakes going on 23 years

@@GravelCyclist ooh yes, drooled over those fine colors in mountain bike action magazine, which costed about $25 in Denmark back then. Never got beyond XTR on my AMP

RAD. Easily the best bike-related vid I've seen lately. Thank you for this, and the recent Falconer feature. Fingers crossed for another run of the Paul's red/white/black VH anodized stems, hint hint... 🖤😛🦄💀🤙

Good to see a company leader so technically competant, seems like most companies are led by MBA marketers nowadays

Whilst I am sure Paul components are excellent, in organisation and manufacturing in that place looks like it is stuck somewhere in the 1980s, check out the Hope factory videos for how a component manufacturer operates in the 2020s for some comparison.

Hope is on my list of manufacturers to visit, assuming I can visit the UK sometime in the near future. Covid is throwing a spanner / wrench into the works.

Paul is like Chris King, Phil Wood, tune etc... companys whos exsiting only of glory past times but the customer of the years 1985~1995 be older cant riding and be die... no inovations and if companys like paul, king, phil, tune&Co really that they can outlive with his ultra expensive prices that belive only his self 😏🙄 the "Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Box Set" for proud price of 2000$!! set is from 2019 and now end of 2020 16pcs on stock shown begin of END. CNC Derailleur was nice but 60$ for one thumbie clamp or 160$ for old v-brakes 😂😂😂😂 is a joke!

I have bad news to report... I cannot vouch for Chris King and Phil Wood, but when I visited Paul Component Engineering, their sales were booming.
