How much power does a 4AGE 20v Blacktop make?

  • After a good 10k miles of break-in, the engine is ready for a dyno baseline. Temperature was 80f/26.5c. Only modifications to the engine is AC delete and, 100mm trumpets. It was great to see the pipercross air filter not affecting the power very much!
    Final power output:
    135whp with pipercross filter
    136whp open trumpets

    No surprise on the air filter. The whole air filters are restrictive hype is nonsense. No benefit running without them unless you want to take photos of the trumpets :) loved the video. Great power on the BT, means it's nice and healthy and ready for upgrades. Looking forward to more vids.

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  Před 7 lety +17

      +driving 4 answers the restrictive hype on some filters is true! I ran the red UNI filters and they choked the engine, huge difference after I removed them. I suspected the pipercross had little effect on power because there was hardly any difference with it installed vs running open trumpets. I'm excited about doing power upgrades!

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage Před 7 lety +3

      Interesting results. There is definitely a ton of hype around air filters and intakes in general, but ITBs is its own world. I'm sure there are some bad egg filters for any setup, but for the most part they won't hurt power in most applications that aren't insane.

      what size cams are you looking at going with as it would be really intriguing to find out how driveable you want the car to be. Maybe running 300 degree duration cams might be a little excessive but man it would sound good at 9900rpm.

  • @LevinTRD

    Nice video. Can’t wait for your videos with upgraded cams and stuff. As long as your cams are below 9mm lift and if you don’t plan to rev over 8500rpm, stock valve springs will be fine. But better to be safe than having a valve float at high rpms.
    Also, it would be great if you could do a dyno comparison video with different length trumpets. I believe shorter stacks gives higher hp at higher rpm vs higher torque at lower rpm on longer stacks. Let’s see how it goes.

    My silvertop with a bt ecu and the same trumpets made 134hp leaning out after 6000rpm because of a bad fuel pump. I replaced my pump with a denso one for a supercharged mr2. I haven't redynoed it yet but but i installed a AEM wide band and its not leaning out anymore and pulls much harder all the way to 8600. Look into a fuel pump if your still running the old corrola one. I can repost on here when i redyno.

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  Před 6 lety

      I ran my engine easy for the first 400 miles or so. I changed the oil after 150 miles so that i could get all the assembly lube out with the oil. Then checking to make sure oil level every 50 miles or so and check for leaks. Then, slowly increase rev's before shifting. At 600 miles i would start revving the engine out with smooth pulls but not beating on it. After about 1,000 miles i was comfortable driving it like it was meant to be.
      I'm using mobil 1 full synthetic 20w50 oil.

    I'm going for 110mm stacks and Tomei Poncams on my AW11 20v BT this winter.
    I had it dynoed this summer with a healthy 145 WHP on 102 octane, bonestock, with nothing but a Fidanza Flywheel and alloy pulleys and a 2,5" exhaust with highflow cat.

      @sushpants  Před 6 lety +1

      I never ran it with the stock manifold so I don't have any numbers for the that. I suspect I lost a lot of power from my exhaust, my cat is the original from the 16v bluetop. I think I will have a healthy power bump from exhaust and cams.

    damn I thought it makes 165hp? I know you get less at the wheels but you just lost about 30hp?! how do you avoid that? I wish this engine had better displacement

    • @Septicus_7
      @Septicus_7 Před 6 lety +3

      You don't avoid that, it is basic physics. A larger displacement doesn't help with the drivetrain loss

    • @lukeaugustine2488
      @lukeaugustine2488 Před 6 lety

      no i meant if it were a 2l it would have made way more than just 165 stock so it might have been around 200hp with about 170whp

    • @Septicus_7
      @Septicus_7 Před 6 lety

      Yeah, higher displacement engines usually perform better, or can be made to perform better, like the s2000 engine, 2l 200hp. Probably around 170whp.

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  Před 6 lety +1

      I think so too. It's probably getting choked by the original cat in the car. I'm going to swap the header and get a highflow cat and then retest to see the gains.

    • @tjcben1
      @tjcben1 Před 4 lety +1

      Just keep on tuning it and don't go hp crazy. It's better to have an engine matched to the chassis so it can be driven 9/10s all the time. The character of the car is preserved. Sounds awesome! Miss mines.

      sushpants and that's the factory one? I have a fx with a 20v silver top, and I don't know which gear box have 😅 because I bought already swapped it

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  Před 7 lety +1

      Some blacktops came with 6 speeds and some with 5. I think the same was with the silvertops. Easy way to tell is where your reverse is. If its to the left and forward, its a 6 speed.

    • @anthonycabrera2585
      @anthonycabrera2585 Před 7 lety

    Should it not have more power?

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  Před 6 lety

      It's right around the ballpark. 136whp equates to around 160 engine hp, but i think there is a lot of upgrade potential from changing the exhaust. I'm still using the original catalytic converter and i believe it is very restrictive. I have a header and high flow cat on order, i will install them and re-test.

    • @kaedeschulz5422
      @kaedeschulz5422 Před 6 lety +1

      sushpants yeah you could do a lot to the engine! Cams pistons ecu and so on...

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  Před 6 lety

      I'm hesitant to do pistons because I will need 93 gas and in California we have some of the crappiest gas. Blacktop stock already has a really high compression.
