    It's really crazy on the difference between the rods it's got me worried now if I should get aftermarket ones

    • @4AGEEDGarage
      @4AGEEDGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      Quite thin, I was planning on using these however my engine machinist highly recommended not using them due to the amount of kms the engine had done 273km. He said they get fatigue over time and would hate to see me spend all the money on rebuilding and have a rod break/twist destroying my engine.
      If your rebuilding try find some Silvertop rods, I just got MRP ones because I needed them quickly plus are lighter.

    Good video, thanks for the detail. Prior to the rebuild did it consume a lot of oil and blow smoke from time to time? Are stuck piston rings/excessive blowby a thing on 20 Valves?

    • @4AGEEDGarage
      @4AGEEDGarage  Před rokem +1

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes it had excessive smoke especially on deceleration. Prior to the rebuild I replaced the valve stem seals but still didn't fix my smoke issue. Was a higher km engine with 273,000km when it was rebuilt.

    • @RolanTHUNDER
      @RolanTHUNDER Před rokem

      @@4AGEEDGarage no worries. Thanks for the info. Do you think that the engine didn't receive timely oil changes before you go it to cause that oil burn? Maybe the wrong kind of oil was used for a long time?

    • @RolanTHUNDER
      @RolanTHUNDER Před rokem

      @@4AGEEDGarage Ah I see. My engine is totally stock and untouched yet somehow the oil burn has become excessive. I also installed new Supertech stem seals. She pulls hard and sounds awesome though. I don't get smoke on decel, only on accel at certain times. Oil is disappearing off the dipstick too quickly though. Rear main is leaking badly so that contributes to it.
      I want to run a TRD head gasket with everything else stock including head bolts when I get new piston rings to install. What do you reckon?

    how hard was it to rebuild the blacktop? could the average bloke do it by following instructions/ help from people?

    • @4AGEEDGarage
      @4AGEEDGarage  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey, it wasn't that hard really, I would say the hardest part which wasn't really hard, was the plasti gauge part to measure bearing clearances, just time consuming.
      I would say and average bloke could definitely do this providing you take you time, get the machine shop to do their part and do the crucial parts with machining, ring gaps and clearances etc.
      I have never rebuilt an engine before, I'm not even a mechanic but just followed a couple of manuals, youtube and done research not that there is many videos I found of step by step process. My videos will obviously give you some idea what is involved and the extra things I did.

      @@WilsonNZ welcome. Another helpful tip is to take photos of everything when pulling appart which is good to look at when putting it back together, and bag the nuts/bolts and parts in snaplock bags so you know what bolts are for what.
      4age is a pretty simple engine really, going to build a 16v for my white car late this year or early next so more videos will come up of that.

      @RolanTHUNDER Před rokem

      Yeah his videos are good for us 20 valve guys :)
      Why the rebuild though? Is yours stock and untouched? Does it blow smoke/consume a lot of oil? I have an AE111 GT so it's the 4 door version of your Levin

    • @4AGEEDGarage
      @4AGEEDGarage  Před rokem +1

      Thanks heaps. Sounds good, will be a good project if you go ahead with your rebuild/refresh. My build cost just over 5k NZD including buying the tooling to port/polish the head.

    • @TBD_Teebs
      @TBD_Teebs Před rokem +1

      @@RolanTHUNDER Ah, mines just tired and runs rich due to stock ECU. It's done 210k KMs, will probably do another 50k but I've been wanting to do it for a few years now, plus respray, suspension refresh, etc. just the cost was always a barrier. You can easily spend $5k plus and only make 30hp more, but the engine response and sound of ITBs is just phenomenal with a light chassis. These older engines and corollas are slowly going up in value now too.

    • @TBD_Teebs
      @TBD_Teebs Před rokem

      @@RolanTHUNDER Higher mileage 4AGE's are known for burning oil and running rich, mine does it, so it's nothing to really worry about, but it's definitely something I'd like to tidy up as part of the rebuild and ECU + tune.

    • @TBD_Teebs
      @TBD_Teebs Před rokem

      @@4AGEEDGarage Ah ok, that's not too bad. I suppose though you didn't add Cams or a standalone ECU and CoP conversion + tune, so that adds an extra grand or 2 lol. Do you reckon conrods are worth upgrading if you're really only making an extra 20kw? I wouldn't think so if they're in decent shape still. My blacktop has no issues besides the common VVT tick so imagine internals are ok.

    Hey mate I'm rebuilding an 20v blacktop to dp you have some more advice? The block looks good and the cilinders all in other words looks great do I need to take it to the machine shop to polish it and go oversized or polish is just clean ?

    • @4AGEEDGarage
      @4AGEEDGarage  Před 2 lety

      Definitely take it to a reputable engine machine shop if you want the engine to last. If the honing isn't done correctly on the bores the piston rings won't seal properly which defeats the purpose of pulling it appart. My machine guy said always best to go with .5 oversize although if your running a used piston and going with a light hone, just get them to check the clearances. Make sure you have a proper 4age 20v repair manual too with correct torque specs and clearances.

    Was just doing searches on the 20v silver/blacktop as I want to learn more on this as I know they are awesome engines but not a large community for me to get any details on. Are you familiar with the amount of hp the 20v silver top comes with stock?

    • @4AGEEDGarage
      @4AGEEDGarage  Před 2 lety +1

      Thats cool, nice project building an engine and senseofachievement.
      For what reason would you want an adjustable vvt solenoid? The factory one works fine. Conrods are a good idea on a blacktop. Any particular reason for choosing coil on pack? You won't gain any power from them on a stock engine and probably need aftermarket ecu to run them properly.

    • @stevieboy6913
      @stevieboy6913 Před 2 lety

      @@4AGEEDGarage I dont know if the vvt solenoid is good on mine. If it's not the I'll probably go for ajustable cams.
