- How often have you picked up the Quran and just couldn’t follow along because the translation was in old English? We talk to a pair of translators who tackled this very issue. Dr. Mustafa Khattab completed a thematic English translation of the Quran, entitled the Clear Quran. Dr. Khattab has completed his Ph.D in Islamic Studies in English from Al-Azhar University, and is a Muslim Adjunct Chaplain at Brock University. Joining him is the editor-in- chief of The Clear Quran, Abu Isa Webb.

Where i can find clear quran
Great episode! I am a recent revert and as a senior (74) I bring a lot of experience to this journey, some of it not too informed. When I started to read the Quran it was mystifying - it made little sense to me and I dropped it. Fortunately a friend who was a Muslim suggested I had a weak translation and steered me to a good Quran with commentary - the lights came on! I now have a few copies of the Quran and have come to the conclusion that there is not a translation of the Quranic Arabic but an interpretation. The Clear Quran certainly is a great tool especially for new Muslims.
Can you please share which book you got that helped you? I would like to buy one for my Christian neighbor.
@@naffs1069 "The Clear Quran" is a good place to start. It is available from Amazon.
I can't speak for Saudi, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
But rest of the Muslim world is desparately wanting scholars to revisit all interpretations and translations and science of hadiths.
We can't say that out loud because we are afraid that we will be called slaves of liberals, but attitude of traditional Interpretations and actual Qur'an text doesn't match at all.
Why can't we benifit from Qur'an at it's best potential, why these ultra traditionalists and literalists stop us from doing that?
They don't have monopoly over Qur'an.
Just because they got tawhid right doesn't mean everything they say is right.
And to detachment from old pagan religions and superstitions, we muslims are arriving on natural Tawhid on our own.
Shirk is dieing it's own death due to science.
90% of muslims are not even following what these literalists preach, muslims are living in apologetics fashion, because they can't practice literal meanings in practical life. Then why not give muslims the interpretation which they can practice in practical life.
May Allah make things easy for us.
I was expecting this for a long time now , brilliant.
I appreciate the effort from these brothers, a proper contemporary English translation is much needed. Reading through several chapters of their translation I had a few things I would like to critique 1. I did not find it easy to read, it was simply not in old English. An improvement, absolutely, but I do think it could be written more poetically, and less like a word for word translation that at times does not make sense. I believe there was a part that refers to martyrs and how we should not refer to them as having died and your translation states "do not say about the martyrs 'dead'". This simply is not proper English. 2. the word taqwa was translated as fear. Yes taqwa requires a degree of fear, but a much better translation is God-conciousness. 3. Your translation says hell is eternal however the proper Arabic translation when referring to hell's length of time is "long lasting". Lasting does not mean forever. 4. Finally, "Kafir" is translated as disbeliever. Kafir refers to one with full knowledge of truth and goes on in their disbelief. I believe a better way of translating kafir is "active denyer of truth" A lengthy translation for sure but it does a lot of justice to the word and clears up confusion. I appreciate that Arabic names are changed to English to provide clarity for non Arabic speakers and that powerful words are used to help show the magnitude of meaning. I am really grateful for these brothers' work and how much time and effort they put into this translation. I simply would like to see a revision in these few things I listed that could he improved. I am nowhere near these brothers level of expertise in Arabic, but in English I do believe an improvement can be made in choice of words. Thank you both.
*in English I do believe an improvement can be made in choice of words.*
In his more clear translation, Mustafa Khattab replaced "worst of animals" with "worst of beings". That defeats the purpose of his introductory argument.
The reason they do this, is because if you follow the rules of English, it CAN change the meaning of the ayah, meaning you can interpret the ayah differently then it is meant. They leave it pure, as is.

@@jxcess3891 i don't know if its magic. It should be reinterpreted to suit the time place and culture. To add fake hadith is the main fallacy, then base interpretions on those fake hadith, then actually have hadith that have nothing to do with the quran sometimes against it, and believe and follow those opinions. Thats where we are. This whole bacon thing however is just repugnant behavior, if you are an adult, you should know better. You have freedom of speech, i respect it, there is a thing called decorum, humanity, just not being an abrasive fuktard, helps.

In many ways picking up the Clear Qur'an feels like picking up a Christian translation of the Bible, with the section headings (which I love), use of English versions of names (helps connect the Qur'an to the previous Messages), and the word for word + paraphrase is nice.
My biggest issue is that I do still feel at times a need to check with other translations, and while the [bracketed words] are at times helpful, I find that they often add words that add a meaning not found in the Qur'an's Arabic but drawn from hadith or tradition.
You're right. Sometimes I disagree with the intended meaning to be drawn from words in comas. My mother tongue is close to Arabic so that helps me alot but I still check different translations to get closer to the original words of Allah.

Am interested to have a copy. Philippines.
I think a good translation would also stop alot of other religions from slamming it all the time, better clarity and to show the muslims are not taught to hate .....very good, I would read it when they are done. I am non muslim......I know my sister in college was a practicing catholic and even though media would portray it as a hateful religion she said she read a copy of the Koran (might be spelled wrong) and she said it does not promote that but I do agree alot gets lost in the translation or lack there of.......Great Show
its hard to argue with 'slay the infidel where ever you find him' in the quaran. The Holy Bible clearly says to love thy neighbors, not slay them.
It hard to understand anything without context. That verse is from surah tawbar (even though you quoted it roughly) revealed during the time of war which allowed persecuted muslims (who were kill, massacred and tortured ) to finally retaliate. This verse allows us to protect our families and our people. its war, its not something where people go about with flowers and hit each other with it. I guess you condemn what soldiers did during WWll where they'd had to fight Germany (Nazi Germany) because they should have loved them instead, right? Surah 9:6 clearly shows that its not innocent people or civilians who are to be killed instead it's those who persecute you: "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know." surah 9:13 "Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers."
NAYEM SCORPION
And where did you read that??NOT QURAN!!
BIBLE MAYBE.
The Old Testament has alot of killings in it actually and really bad stuff but I learned it was people of that time trying to express themselves in that time to the people of that time, through the God lens they had at that time, this makes me understand it better, the New Testament is more about morals and such then just stories from the people way back then. Most religions promote some good morals if you study them. My friend lived among muslims in Nepal and had good experience with them... All of the muslims I have met here in the US were very nice to me so I don't have bad experiences from them and do defend them when people talk against them. I do realize there are radicals but in Christianity there is that too "think westboro baptists" but should you judge everyone cause of the radical? I think not.....

Dr. Mustafa Khattab! thank you brother. that website is great & I found other interesting books & they're doing really great work. May Allah helps & protects everyone and grant us guidance. Asalamualikum.
Thanks brother.
These Quran translations are based upon hadith books not the Quranic definitions of the words. Just look at any traditionalist translation of the Quran like Sahih International and you will see they are very inconsistent when they translate certain words like salat or zakat so they can slip in their extra Quranic literature.
But this "The Clear Qur'an" is not at all based on hadiths. So you can enjoy reading it! A well-known person to me actually recommended this translation of the Qur'an by Mustafa Khattab, who's actually more of a Quranist and less of a hadithist (i.e. only accepting hadiths that are not contradictory to the Divine word of God).

My view about all translations of English Quran is, None of the translations are free from error, only if, it was not detected yet because it is humans hand work, it may be very closer but can never be 100%, that is another knowledge we derived from the Quran where Almighty Allah say, let the best of HUMAN and the best of JINNS creature come together to produce something like this Quran, they can never produce something that worth the Quran. Thanks for presenting to readers an alternative translation, but after perusing other translations and would have really love to give you a thumbs up, Muhammad Asad still remains my first preference. Also, I am puzzled as the why you "labeled" your translation as "Clear Quran", when in fact no translation could ever fully convey the layers of the meaning of the words of Allah. Many of the words in the Quran are written in imagery or metaphors and no word for word translation could ever convey what it truly represent. So, the usage of "clear" makes no sense. May Allah reward your effort.

They are changing the bad, violent, issue, contradiction into right term so that islam will be that kind of peaceful, tolerant and good teachings and to able to defend the violent quaran. Do you know Allah promised to protect the quaran.
They think that they are greater than their allah (who protect quran) and muhammad. This fabrication will gradually bring enmity between moderate and radical muslim, and finally Islam would come to an end by themselves.
clearquran.com if this website is your translation you still have mistakes in it.
I believe that it is impossible to translate holy text .
EVEN in this book there are mistakes ,for many reasons .
One of these reasons is that translation is a kind of interpretation , for that reason they mustn't translate the structure of Arabic Quran literally or vocabularies.even Arabs need Tafsir and clarification to understand metaphors and real meaning.
Finally translation is an art ,so they mustn't translate texts of Quran but they should Translate books of Tafsir that is much better for English speakers who can't learn Arabic
notonly privte
Ridiculous. So the Arabic of the tafsir can be translated and understood but the Quranic Arabic cannot?
Very weak argument. Words have meaning and that can be translated. A word for word literal translation might not be possible to understand but that's due to the differences in the languages not because the Quran is holy.
Anthony Can you imagine
If you translate English poem or an English song to Arabic according to English structure ,
Then the poem will lose its sense ,flow, beauty and meanings
because of
Translation gap among languages ,
metaphors ,
structure of sentence
culture
idioms
.....etc

I have not read this translation but would be hoping that the following Quranic words would be given the correct English translation:
Salat, Aqeemu-Salat, Malaika, Sajda, Sujood and the most controversial word, Jinn.
The Sheikh is correct the very first Quran translations were written by non-Muslims! This resulted in us, being given a Quran translation that does not match the Arabic. In fact there is a somewhat Christian bias in many verses. We have been unknowingly accepting these false narratives.
Qur'an is difficult to translate but easy to understand.
Islam is Qur'an and sunnah.
Sunnah is different from hadeeths..
Hadeeths are things attributed to prophet after very long time.
Humans are animals and beasts, but I see how people in their ignorance of English or their associations might have problems with rendering creature with these words in relation to humans.
The problem with translation is that something may be correctly translated without it being understood the same by the readers.
If something can't be correctly translated or needs a secondary interpretation instead of being able to be understood directly, a text is not for a living culture.
Tradition should not obscure the meaning of revelation and inspirations to God's prophets.
Based on such things as linguistics and determinative signs in hieroglyphs, people did give female names to light beings in their angelology, but Islam denied gendering the unfallen angels.

yeah but its important to mention and remind that at the end of the day the Quran CANNOT be translated. Translating it is a human effort. Brother, Please don't attack the version or translation of earlier translators like Abdullah Yusuf Ali. I consider him as man with Allah's swt blessing & authority in His time for the words he used to the best of his knowledge & Wisdom for which only Allah swt has the power & authority to give unto him. His in Chapter 53:27 doesn't differ much on yours. Consider that the subject of that verse are the Unbelievers belief on Angels as females & he says of them: "name the Angels with female names" & yours: "brand them as females". To me, who is used to A.Y.Ali translation, yours doesn't affect much my clear understanding of the verse as the Unbelievers belief on Angels as females, tho name was used by Yusuf Ali & yet not one name he mentioned. Simply said: the Angels are females to the Unbelievers tho they are not females. It is still the same as your retranslation. That is why I consider him with Allah's swt authority to use his own choice of words. The intent of the verse is still intact & unaltered. It is to me just an attempt to confuse the minds of innocent people who studied not the Quran yet.
Best to understand Quran is by comparison of varied translations in all languages & dialects you have the capacity to understand, then whatever doubts in your mind as to your level of understanding you submit to & seek from Allah swt as part of your dua for Him to give you the TRUTH.
Never attack anyone's translation. Only gifted & guided people of Allah swt has the Courage & Wisdom to translate the Quran in a language or dialect he is authorized by Allah swt. They are Messengers of Allah swt for that purpose & gift of knowledge, courage & Wisdom to do such a mission or service.
Masha'allah! Subhanallah! Alhamdulillah! Allahu'akbar! Yah Allah, I submit to Your Mighty Will!
In his more clear translation, Mustafa Khattab replaced "worst of animals" with "worst of beings". So, I feel like the introduction that he gave was deceptive, painfully ignorant at best. But, I do appreciate that he preserved the meaning instead of warping it to please people.
? have they never read Sahih International's translation? It's literally the same structure as theirs. Instead of pointing out bad translations of other books, why not support the good, existing ones?
...because they feel they can improve upon it. They believe they can provide a more accurate translation. While it is important to exemplify strengths we should always strive to improve our ability to communicate Islam if we can. It like if you have strong arms and weaker legs you can show off your biceps...but don’t skip leg day.
So many translations of the Quran translate the Arabic word for ""three" as Trinity in verse 4:171. The translators apparently do not know the difference between Trinitarianism and Tritheism. I think that this verse is condemning Tritheism, and not Trinitarianism. John Philoponus lived in the sixth century and he taught Tritheism. Some deposed Orthodox bishops were also spreading this heresy throughout Syria in the sixth century and seventh century. If a Christian commits excess in his religion as this verse says, he would be exaggerating the doctrine of the Trinity to the extent that it becomes Tritheism. He would be saying that there are three gods, and not one God who exists in three Persons who share the same essence. [If the divine essence (the substance of which God consists), could be divided into infinitesimally small particles, each particle would belong to all Three Persons. One essence, one God. The same essence, the same God.]
When we Christians believe that that Jesus is God, we are simply obeying the Quran. It says to believe those Scriptures which preceded the Quran. (Quran 4:136; 5:59; 29:46, etc.) Those Scriptures apparently were not "corrupted" in the seventh century. Otherwise, Muhammad would not have told people to believe them.
"There are now in existence about 4000 known manuscripts of the Bible, or parts of the Bible, made between the 2nd and 15th centuries. This seems few to us, but it is far more than the manuscripts of any other ancient writings. There is not a complete known copy of Homer earlier than A.D. 1300; nor of Herodotus earlier than A.D. 1000." (Halley's Bible Handbook, p. 751, Twenty-Fourth Edition, Copyright 1965, by Halley's Bible Handbook, Inc., Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, MI 49506)
Also, in this verse (Quran 4:171), I have seen the Arabic words:
subHanahu an yakuna lahu waladun.
These words are often mistranslated. subHanahu means "Glory be to Him." an yakuna = that He should be. lahu = for Him. waladun = a begotten Son.( Walada means begotten.) There is another word in Arabic that could mean either a begotten son or an adopted son. Waladun is used instead of that other Arabic word. The Arabic literally says, "Glory be to Him that He should be for Him a begotten Son." This is talking about Jesus judging from the context.
I wish the translators of the Quran would do a better job of translating the text. I have not seen this gentleman's work. Maybe it is better than the ones I have seen.
Ralph Cravey
That’s cute. Trying a different style, eh?
Why don’t I clarify some of your misrepresentations?
* Subhanah is an exaltation. God is exalted from having offspring (begotten or otherwise).
* Under the strict standards of Islamic monotheism, trinitarianism is tantamount to tritheism; so “three” is fine.
Ralph stop trying to edit the Quran to suit your narrative of Christianity. Your definitions are wrong
@@seemaab Why do you believe my definitions are wrong?
@@ecstasywater7923 From where did you get that definition of subhanah? Why do you believe Trinitarians believe that God had biological offspring?
Ralph Cravey you are purposely changing the meaning of words to suit your narrative. You are trying to infer that the Quran actually supports the trinity and that God begot a son.
1. One of the beauties of Islam is that it came to dispel the myths that you Christians conjured up about Jesus. God clearly states to the Christians such as yourself in the Quran in 4:171 - “ O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes regarding your faith; say nothing about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allah and the fulfilment of His Word through Mary and a spirit ˹created by a command˺ from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, “Trinity.” Stop!-for your own good. Allah is only One God. Glory be to Him! He is far above having a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah is sufficient as a Trustee of Affairs.”
After the word trinity or three is used, God makes it clear that he is only One God, not three and not part of a trinity regardless of which word you cherrypick.
2. God clearly states in the Quran in 112:3 - “He begets not, nor is He begotten”
So as you can see the Quran disproves your dream and theories about Jesus no matter how you try and make it fit your narrative.
You may read any translation of the Quran and you will find them similar including those by non Muslims such as George Sale.
Allah Arbak
Masha mustafa shaik you have tried to attempt a very noble job with all due respect according to me you have failed you translated the Quran to please the non believers which is good but also bad where allah is rude with offenders you portrayed him as kind which is according to me wrong for instance Allah says hit your wife if she disobey every translation is the same but you have translated with peculiar way..this is my reason to denounce your translation.
The Clear Quran is has A lot of mistakes. Be careful…. If there are any mistakes it can be considered misleading… whether accidental, purposefully, based on any biases, opinions….the day of accounting will come.
The problem is that individuals are translating Quran ....
It should be done at institutionals and governmental level....example of caliph Usman is there when he as caliph produced standard authentic copy of Quran...
So you'd be happy with the Saudi government translating the Qur'an? Besides, they already approve particular translations anyway.

Must be frustrating knowing that your religion is dying, one Internet comment at a time.
You will see more and more muslims everytime, even in your family... It's predicted. Go and see statistics.
@K 2 why dont you just check for yourself instead of relying on youtube or google...i myself was a christian and embraced islam. i myself, i witnessed a lot of people of different nationalities embracing islam..yes it is true that some muslims did left islam, that is also true..but by comparison, in both religion, christianity and islam, there are more practicing muslims than a practicing christians..they are just ticking the box of religion, as christian but in practice they are not..similarly there are muslims who did so, they will say they are muslims but they never practice islam..and some of them due to little knowledge of the religion they left islam and embrace christianity or any other religion by influence of a friend or by necessity, not by correct doctrine or correct theology..unlike christians, when they accept islam it is purely because of correct belief in God and correct concept of God and of sound theology...
