  • Your questions answered live: China's Chang'e 6 probe is set to land soon on the far side of the moon this weekend. It's an important step for human lunar exploration, as China attempts to collect the first ever samples from the far side of the moon, and return to Earth. While Sweden, France and Italy are supporting the mission, US law bans NASA from collaborating with China.
Can China succeed in breaking new ground with this moon mission? What does this mean for the space race with the US, as well as its worries about China's space program being a front for military initiatives? Ask DW your questions live right here at 18:00 CEST, Sunday.

It’s interesting that western media analyze Chinese space program upside down, trash talk Chinese, pad ourselves on the back… and Chinese rarely talk bad about NASA, SpaceX… just quietly do their things at their own pace. It feels like a teen going to movie in his dad leased Porsche laughing at a middle age driving a Camry he paid with cash to work.

Even these experts don’t know that the even in 1990s, China was the only country banned from participating in the international space station. That is why China decided to build their own. Russian was not banned because Russian already was a space power but China was not so the West doesn’t want China to learn anything.

Both Russia and the US had tested nuclear weapons in space without permission.
During the early Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union conducted nuclear tests in space to explore the effects of nuclear explosions on the Earth's magnetosphere and to advance military technologies. The U.S. carried out notable tests like Operation Argus (1958) and Operation Fishbowl (1962), including the significant "Starfish Prime" detonation, which caused widespread electromagnetic disruptions. Similarly, the Soviet Union conducted high-altitude tests, such as Test 184 (1962), to study the ionosphere and potential military applications. These activities ceased after the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty, which banned nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater.

China has successfully landed its spacecraft on the Moon's far side.
China's Chang'e-6 probe landed on the far side of the moon aiming to collect samples from the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin which will be brought back to Earth.
The lander-ascender combination of the Chang'e-6 probe landed at the designated landing area in the SPA Basin. The mission has made technological breakthroughs, including lunar retrograde orbit design and control technology. It will go on to complete key tasks such as the intelligent, rapid sampling from the lunar far side and lunar surface take-off.
The probe of Chang'e-6 has gone through various stages such as Earth-moon transfer, near-moon braking, lunar orbiting and landing descent.
The lander-ascender combination separated from the orbiter-returner combination on May 30.
The Chang'e-6 probe faces a different terrain to the Chang'e-5 sample mission.
To sample-retrieve from the lesser-known far side, the probe needs a relay satellite for communication and needs to be even more efficient and time-sensitive.
Due to the moon's obstruction, the Earth-moon communication window period on the far side of the moon, even with the help of the Queqiao-2 relay satellite service, is still shorter than that on the near side.
In a major leap for lunar exploration, Chang'e-6 boasts an intelligent sampling process that allows the probe to autonomously execute instructions and make real-time decisions based on sensor data, reducing the need for constant communication with Earth.
Essentially, Chang'e-6 can break down complex instructions into smaller actions, verify their success using on-board sensors, and adjust its approach as needed without waiting for further commands from mission control. This significantly streamlines the sampling process and minimizes delays caused by Earth-moon signal lag.

"Russia and China proposed an amendment to the U.S.-Japan draft that would call on all countries, especially those with major space capabilities, “to prevent for all time the placement of weapons in outer space, and the threat of use of force in outer spaces.”
The vote was 7 countries in favor, 7 against, and one abstention and the amendment was defeated because it failed to get the minimum 9 “yes” votes required for adoption.
The U.S. opposed the amendment, and after the vote Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia addressed the U.S. ambassador saying: “We want a ban on the placement of weapons of any kind in outer space, not just WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). But you don’t want that. And let me ask you that very same question. Why?”
He said much of the U.S. and Japan’s actions become clear “if we recall that the U.S. and their allies announced some time ago plans to place weapons … in outer space.”
Nebenzia accused the U.S. of blocking a Russian-Chinese proposal since 2008 for a treaty against putting weapons in outer space."
