  • We review the NEW 2022 Triumph Street Twin (Now Renamed Speed Twin) Bonneville EC1 Special Edition, which has a custom paint scheme & hand painted lines and graphics. Is it worth the extra cash over the standard model? Watch the video to make that decision after you've heard all about it!
We put the bike through its paces on all roads before making the video as always. Here we go into how it rides, handles, turns and stops. How good does it sound? Does the 900cc engine have enough power and torque? What is the quality like? How are the gears? How good are the brakes? What could be improved? We give it to you straight!
This modern classic is Triumph's best selling Bonneville and you will be able to see why by watching all of this video.

I’ve watched this video I don’t know how many times and always forgotten to comment so here I am… I tested the two T Bonnevilles, the Kawasaki RS 650 and 900, plus the Interceptor, and I have to say, none of them come even close to this bike for shear grin-ability, style or value for money. Like @PhilipHermannBE, I’ve been able to get one from the local Triumph dealer here in Germany. I should be picking it up this week, but I’m on holiday 🙄
I think you both deserve a medal from Triumph. You’re doing a fantastic job! Great content. Keep up the good work 👏🏾👏🏾

I know exactly what you mean about young people. I have been trying to get my son, age 28, into bikes for five years. I have even offered to buy him his first bike, and he is simply not interested. He'd rather sit on the couch, no girlfriend, playing video games for hours and hours. I feel bad for him because he will have no stories to tell his kids down the road, if he ever has any. I guess it's a hopeless cause.

That’s a shame. They don’t make biking cool in films etc so youngsters have no role models to emulate I guess

I'm 25 and only know a handful of other guys around my age who are into bikes. We're rare but we're definitely out there, I think it's due to our risk averse, bubble-wrap society. It's been drilled into our heads our entire lives how bikes are just deathtraps, by overly protective parents and by wider society. We had posters up in my college canteen of bike crash horror stories for christ sake

@@matt961234567 you’re right, it’s drilled into people not to get into bikes. I (Darcy) am 19 and I only know 1 person my age who rides. It’s a shame but there’s just so many hurdles these days!

Instead of forcing hobbies on your children, maybe try showing interest in whatever hobbies they’re into. You’d be surprised how interesting video games can be. What you find interesting might not be appealing to them because they’re used to seeing you do it and they just dont find it that interesting. We’re all individuals.

Completely lost it when I heard you talk about “youngsters” like myself. Wish my parents were as cool as you, but it took me heading off to college in a different state (as I live in the US) and secretly getting my motorcycle license and buying a bike for me to be able to ride. Being the youngest with two older brothers, my parents weren’t quite as accepting for their youngest and only daughter to buy a crotch rocket. But here I am, three years later, still enjoying the ride. Have watched all your Triumph videos and trying to convince myself to buy another bike. Thanks for the review!

It's not advertised, but both levers are actually adjustable, and the stock exhaust sound is one of the best I've heard out of the factory. I have a 2020 model and it's a great town bike absolutely nailed it with the rev range and torque, light enough, flickable, balanced and slim enough for traffic filtering. I have customised mine a little with tiger 800 bars, higher shotgun exhaust, spoked tubeless wheels, larger 14ltr tank and of course heidenau k60 tyres. A lager tank really takes the hassle out of regular fill ups and gives great range on a trip. You're right about its top end, over 50-60 mph it doesn't really perform so get used to crushing around at 50-55 mph. It's a great non threatening bike for the beginner, ladies, returning bikers, weekenders, commuters or like me a second bike for the weekly commute.

If a bike weighs in around 500 pounds 60 horsepower gets me by, 80 to 90 is great and 100 to 110 is the most I'll ever need for the street.

Stock exhausts sound lovely, handling is great, comfy for a pillion (up to 45 minutes) and has all the top speed you need on UK roads. Getting off the lights is a dream with the 80Nm and in a gloss black it's beautiful!

I usually don't like a matte finish, but it is good. Triumph, Royal Enfield, classic 80s & 90s Hondas... With the exception of aging biker gangs, passing through adventure riders, & the "rocket heads" (local term for the guys who build custom street bikes small and fast) that meet up in parking lots... Those are all anybody rides now. Royal Enfields & Triumph is becoming the motorcycle mainstay in my part of the US

It's been 8 months since I got my street twin and it has been one helluva ride!!! The best bits ? 1. When I rev from stand still, the way it picks the speed. 2. When I am cruising on the highway and take my hand off the throttle, the throaty "hmmmm" that it delivers (I think only street twin owners can understand this comment!!)

Went to the NEC earlier this year specifically to sit on this and the T120/T100. Both of those felt good at 5’9” with 30 inch inside. I thought the Street Twin would suit me better due to the lower seat height but no. I found the pegs to be set the same on all three, but the lower seat meant as you say I was in a jockey position. Just sitting on it was uncomfortable on my knees and hips. Maybe something to do with my young age of 61, but quickly realised this wasn’t a bike for me.

    G'day from Australia!
Totally agree with your comments, quite objective analysis and you've made the look and feel elements very relatable.
I think the older 865cc T100 Bonneville is closer to the Interceptor 650 in terms of classic aesthetics and I favoured that bike (the older T100) for a long time. However, I think the Speed Twin 900 has really nailed the modern classic aesthetic. The silhouette and stance is classic and the details are modern and classy.
The design team has done an exceptional job with this bike as a lapse in design cues could really tarnish the image by way of a "tacky" label.

I looked at an '18 model but the dealer wouldn't budge at all and even 2 yrs later they still wanted full msrp for the bike and they updated them for '19, if I was going to pay full retail I'd just get the newest model, needless to say I've stopped visiting them and they are the only Triumph dealer in my area, I'd much rather drive a lot farther and actually visit the other dealers. I would've been willing to get the '18 if you could've dealt with them that is. One of the last times I went there they still had that bike and it was in 2020.

@@Kista79 I bought mine in 19 it was one of the last 18s they had in stock and the only only one in the show room ready to go. With a number of extra flashy bits. It was significantly cheeper than a 19. Or T 100. I also liked the colour, the mag wheels, and exhaust. It reminded me of my bike from 40 years ago.
I made them an offer for the sticker price on the road, I told them to take all the flashy bits off, because they didn’t interest me. I would would take a base model in red. If they had it ready today.
I left with the bike as is. And the flashy bits are nice.
There is not usually a lot of room for negotiation. It’s nice to know my bike is holding its value well.
I’ve been offered good trade in deals, when tire kicking by other dealers. I really like it so I’m keeping it.
I would not have paid full MSRP for it, when the new model was available. Even though I didn’t think I’d ride it hard enough to notice the difference.
The later models are nice, It’s 2022 now, I would pay the extra.
Used don’t last long on a dealers floor. If you can find one.
I’d still want the red one.
Could be worse, Harley Dealers have been known to ask extra above MSRP.
In the end pick what makes you happy. Limited, extra fancy, the right colour or the best deal. Whatever you feel that is
Almost every time I stop on a ride, somebody asks me about it. It’s a nice bike. It puts a smile on my face.

Hey ol man, From one young old man to another, nice slightly foggy morning to ya.
I never tire of the scenery there.
The street twin, is a good looking ride. I can see they're shortening the fenders. More sporty , but abit more slop getting to the bike. My t100 is old school being a 2005, but I still like the fenders keeping water off me back. And you're so right about the handlebars. A bit wider is better for control. And I still like the knee pads of the 100s and 120s. Still, the street twin is a nice looking bike.
Thanks for the look see . Yes, waiting to see the BSA. Ride safe.

Nice review again - thank you! I have a 2021 T100 and love it to bits. It's the ideal bike for me now I'm older and have slowed down a bit. Strangely, though not unexpectedly I'm enjoying motorcycling so much more now I'm not thrashing about everywhere. I think these bikes remind us of the feelings we had when we first got into bikes -before we were chasing the horsepower. Regarding self-cancelling indicators? I've had a love/hate relationship with these in the past. We used to fall out - the indicators and me. Especially on roundabouts. I always ended up pushing the cancel button right on the cusp of them cancelling themselves. The result being another activation. This went on for some time 🤣

Great review. Was in Pidcock's Long Eaton today and if i had not got the wife with me, I would have bought this exact model. Only negative I can see are the easily removable side panels which could be an issue regards theft, so I would be looking at securing them. Had a Bonneville T120 which I traded in last year for a Yamaha Tracer 7 GT as wanted something for longer journeys but miss owning a Triumph modern classic. Keep up the fab work. LOL. I have a 2020 ST Matte Ironstone finish and absolutely love the bike (and sound of the bike). Very easy to handle. The seat comes off VERY easily, once you realize you have to hold the key turned to the right as you lift up on the back of the seat, then just slide the whole seat to the back of the bike (takes about 2 seconds). My only suggestions for the next model would be: 1) automatic turn signal canceling, and 2) a bit larger LCD display, especially, as you mentioned, larger gear indicator. I couldn't be happier though owning the Street Twin! Oh, and I added the Triumph heated grips too and bar-end mirrors, which I highly recommend!

Love my 2018 (pre modes and hp hike). As mentioned by others below the sound is great and you've captured it well (I'm an ex location sound recordist amongst other things). Bang on regarding mods - potentially a Triggers Broom! At 12:24...on mine if you maintain full twist on the key with one hand it keeps the hook disengaged so the seat comes off easily with the other hand. 13:50 that's the tool to adjust the rear suspension. Thanks for the great honest review, as you say, one can get the detailed spec online, good to get an experienced rider's overview and also well said about getting youngsters on board, this the perfect 1st big bike for a newbie with taste! :-)

I'm getting back to bikes after 20 years off. It took me about an hour to decide I want a bike from the Bonneville range but they're all so nice I can't quite decide which to buy. Today the Street Twin is my favourite but I'm still really tempted to go for a T100 or T120.
Im not interested in going fast, I just want to enjoy relaxed riding on country roads and the odd trip away. I best get out for some test rides.

"The in and outness of the levers" - that'll be the span then! Great review, and you captured the exhaust sound superbly. I have the Street Scrambler (same engine) and the power/torque delivery really is perfect for day to day use and so smooth. That paint scheme really suits the bike, but I think the ec1 logo is too niche. Could always cover it with knee pads. Looking forward to Darcy's Monkey bike review - I've always liked those.

Great video, thanks. I found the comments regarding height, width of bars, visibility with the mirrors particularly useful and it was great to see under the seat and side panels which you don't ususlly see in reviews. I'm 5' 11" so should just about be ok. I'm torn between the Street Twin and the Scrambler, partly because of the wider bars on the scrambler, though a set could presumably be added to this. I don't like the look of the single clock and prefer the dual appearance with the separate rev counter, but this is a minor quibble. Do you know how these water-cooled bikes compare with the earlier water cooled versions?

Great review! Beautiful bike! I almost bought this one, but ended up with the Goldline Speedmaster as I wanted the 1200cc HT engine and more of a cruiser. But my riding friend has this Street Twin and loves it, and it’s her first bike. As you said, this 900cc engine is perfect for any level rider. And I agree, motorcycle engines are becoming too powerful for most riders. There’s really no need for more than 1200cc’s, unless you’re on a 900+ pound bike.
