    From the NES to the PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox, rare video games outlasted Crypto and NFTs and that's hilarious. More specifically, BAD Video Game's have gone increased in value dramatically and the idea of Action 52 being half a grand is hilarious. BUT ALSO TRUE.

    The other fun thing about Wild Woody is it contained actual nudity in it. You had to unlock the game's debug mode and then perform a series of obtuse actions with it on a specific level to make the mermaid sketch topless. Definitely not worth paying hundreds of dollars for, but it is something that would definitely not be possible to sneak into a game nowadays.

I always figured it is set collectors driving up these prices, as well as people who just want expensive stuff in their collection (which... wtf)

    • @Briarcastle
      @Briarcastle Před 8 měsíci +31

      It's a little bit collectors but *speculators* have had a huge, negative impact on the hobby. Hedge fund nepo-babies coming into the space and buying up anything they can get their hands on with the explicit purpose of creating artificial scarcity and raising prices. Most reasonable collectors I know will look at most games and realize, hey, no, that price doesn't represent the value of that game and there is some outside factor forcing up the price. They've also stopped collecting entirely, leaving speculators to just trade between each other till this bubble eventually bursts. The last decade has been really depressing to see the hobby get wrecked like this.

Almost made a CZcams video on how weird it was that it was so cheap back in the day. THAT changed obviously. Good thing I bought two! Although one thing that keeps being glossed over is the "boxed" part. Since this was a Blockbuster exclusive, that meant that you could only get it either by winning a contest or by buying the game when Blockbuster clearenced them out...wherin you would just get the cartridge and MAYBE a tattered instruction book. Honestly hate how expensive collecting is nowadays, especially with bad games. Probably my favourite example is a Barbie Hair Salon game on 3DS, it had a DS version that goes for around $6 CIB but because the 3DS version was low-print & only in my home country Canada, it's going on eBay for around $2000. Now thankfully nobody has bought it for that much, the last sold copy (from my knowledge) on eBay was for $80 which is still too much for a horrible kids game that's probably the reason many girls never played another videogame again, yet the scalpers on eBay seem to believe that people will actually pay multiple thousands for what equants to a terrible game. The fact of the matter is that many people side with them because "supply & demand" but nobody is demanding a bad 3DS game because they want to play it, & yes the supply is low but at the same time the game shouldn't be valued strictly on it's scarcity but also it's quality. With Clayfighter: Sculpter's Cut being so expensive you'd assume it's at least tolerable, but it's atrocious & something nobody would ever play unironically, yet it's scarcity brings it's value way up.
    Sad thing is that games that did sell well are going up too, Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast is the bestselling game on the console with over 2 million units shipped, yet a CIB copy is valued at $80 CAD now, which is absurd for something that genuinely sold well even compared to today's standards. Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash! & Super Smash Bros. Melee also suffer from the same fate, all being system sellers for the Gamecube yet still retaining values as high as $60 - $100 CAD for CIB copies which is bonkers. It's at the point where I feel there should be some staff intervening on eBay or possibly some government intervening, because this once enjoyable & inexpensive hobby is now more expensive than buying cars.

      Intetesting I understand value wise the games shouldnt be sold for this much, but some of these games are pretty popular speedruns and often OG hardware is the main and/or only way to get on the leaderboards with times. I wonder how much is artificial greed inflation vs demand for a product no longer printed for the OG hardware still being pretty big.
      Stuff eventually breaks down and without it being manufactured the rarity does increase and if its in demand, even if it used to be widely circulated we will run out of copies eventually.
      I think alot of this wouldnt matter regardless of things like speedrun communities and collectors if companies allowed people ways to either buy the roms for emulators or even trying to shut down emulators and rom sites. (nintendo >.>)
      These gamea are wanted and its getting to a point of pay big or pirate it. And sometimes the latter isnt even possible

    I thought that gameplay and UI in The Crow: City of Angels looked familiar. It turns out the same developers had released a game called Perfect Weapon just three months prior, which I had unfortunately owned as a kid. That game also operated on tank controls, played like ass, and IIRC had a UI that was about the same as The Crow. The company must've been in some trouble at the time because, according to Wikipedia, these two games are the last ones they completed before shutting down.

    I do own Wild Woody and frankly its not that bad, and i didn't pay even half of that (far less) For Sega CD standards its decent. At least its a 2d platformer and not a fmv focused game.
    And the n64's controller is NOT even close to one of the worst controllers of all time, ever met the 5200's controller? CD-i? (cd-i is a poor man's snes, gravis gamepad, or genesis pad depending upon version). That 3rd party controller you showed is NOT all that bad (if you can stand the hybrid of essentially then trying to be more conventional mixed with a pseudo genesis style before the brawler pad and the like was a thing). CLEARLY you haven't used it. I've used both of those and offical (official is best but that 3rd party doesn't deserve to be in there)
    Starshot also does NOT deserve to be on that list, its a HIDDEN GEM. Granted it has flaws and could used more testing (and a re-release but what couldn't?). But if you can get past those (and you can) its worth playing. I also own that game (i own most every n64 game that isn't a sports game). There's far worse like Superman 64, Elmo, batman on n64, sesame street games, blues brothers, power rangers on it. Not certain how expensive those are but they have certainly gone up in value. Clay Fighter sculptor's cut is way overpriced sure but its by no means a bad game. Its just a slapstick fighter that is a parody on fighting games and not meant to be a hardcore serious competition fighter. NONE of the clay fighter games are bad, not a single one! You're merely basing it upon popularity instead of actually playing it.
    And to be honest those educational titles don't look all that bad. Nor does Spirits and Spells. BC racers is actually a good game given that its a early super mario kart clone. And that Garfield game is probably at least decent relative to the true bottom of the barrel like the loads of shovelware on the wii from DDI or Zoo. I bet you'd rather play it given the forced choice.
    And your own video shows Urban Yeti is technically a hidden gba gem.
    Bad games don't have to be expensive (look at the wii library or the atari 2600 or pc, there's a LOT there that could be considered bad, even and especially among modern indie titles) And a Expensive game is NOT nessecarily bad.
    I can see the argument of "Bad Game for the buck" but "bad expensive games that are rare" you CLEARLY don't understand that the price tag of the game does NOT indicate its relative quality level for what it is, what it was made for and what its on or in its own right.
    Do a better job austin And i WOULD play those disney games if i came across them for cheap (at least for a bit before selling them)

    • @patg108
      @patg108 Před 8 měsíci

      And i would pick up some of those titles, including the disney sports for cheap.
      And frankly that virtual boy title isn't that bad, but its just not that good either, mediocre isn't bad, its a in-between.
      And i wouldn't agree with paying the prices those titles command but to be frank i obtained most of my games long before the 2x+ the cost price hike we have these days.

    I grabbed a used, yet complete Transformers: Beast Wars - Transmetals for the N64 at Blockbuster back in May 2003 for $4.99. Same day I bought my first two Gamecube games: Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime. Mind you, I didn't own an N64. I just wanted it because I was a big Beast Wars fan. Ended up going to GameStop the next weekend and getting a used N64 with two controllers for $20. I also grabbed the PS1 version at Walmart for $19.99 the week it launched.
    I came across a copy of The Guy Game at Gamestop during their PS2 fire sale of 2012-2013. I think it was 99¢, but it might have been closer to $2. Humorously, a lot of people seem to get the finer details of why the Guy Game was pulled from stores wrong. It wasn't because it featured nudity of an underage participant, but because the underage participant lied about her age and was not legally old enough to sign away the use of the footage.
