What is the responsibility of evangelism? In this sermon titled “Calvinism, Hyper-Calvinism, and Arminianism,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones distinguishes between the three from a biblical perspective in regards to evangelism. There is a great confusion today between mere activity and real spiritual work. People are always impressed by activity, but this is often carnal zeal and activism. What is “prayer-backing”? Do Calvinists need to be reminded of the responsibility of evangelism in ministry? What is the right motive for evangelism? Learn of the history of Calvinism and the over-correction that often results. Hyper-Calvinists press logic so far that they do not give the free offer of salvation to others. Hear of election, predestination, and human responsibility, and of the biblical truths that cannot be logically reconciled. God alone is responsible for salvation, while humanity alone is responsible for damnation. Listen as Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones argues that a person ought to be a great Calvinist who preaches like an Arminian. Evangelism is the result of a great urge, not mere duty; it is an inevitable fruit, not something to be added. How did Christianity spread before the printing press? Look to God for help, rather than oneself; be filled with the glory of God, rather than statistics and organizations. Stand humbled before God.

"a convert to calvinism" says MLJ @28:23m is the clarity of the error of this dear and Godly man. Listen to his message of 'false teachings' and one can see his contradiction in being 'a calvinist', as opposed to a follower of Christ alone; being Christ-centered and not calvinist-centered.

5:21-5:27 Which is one of many, many reasons why Billy Graham is not & was not a doctrinally sound source of good theology.
He was ecumenical to the extreme, yoked with false teachers, & his “crusades”/alter calls led to scores of false professions of faith. “Saying the sinner’s prayer” does not save anyone.

I certainly don't advocate the sinners prayer Patrick as I simply don't see it in the Scriptures. Too often, people view the act of saying such a prayer as their ground of acceptance with a Holy God rather than relying wholly and solely on Christ's death, burial and resurrection on their behalf. An easy work but still works nonetheless and not Biblical salvation. However, in some cases, it can be an expression of genuine saving faith that leads to peace and assurance and I have met a good few elderly saints who got saved at Billy Graham meetings in the 50's and still going strong all these years on.

It is the believing on the Lord Jesus Christ that justifies and all believers will certainly call upon the name of the Lord after the point of justification. A prayer thanking the Lord for already having been saved by Christ's redemptive work would be a much more Biblical use of the sinners prayer. Unfortunately, within swathes of modern evangelicalism, it is viewed as virtually meritorious unto salvation. Much blessing Brother and these messages by The Doctor are just great.

It wasn't a formulaic 'repeat after me' one. It came from the heart and was an expression of faith that God could and would save him. It was his faith that justified him not the prayer and that example simply can't be used to justify the practice in evangelism. The publican was alone with God and not led in the prayer by a human intermediary. Salvation is a simple matter of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and with those we witness to after making the way of salvation plain and clear, the Holy Spirit should be left to do His work in His time. Sometimes that will lead to saving faith being expressed in a prayer and in other cases, it won't and just an acceptance that Jesus died in the sinners place that is enough to justify.

Interesting because he clearly spoke God's Word as spoken through Pete and Paul by the Holy Spirit, thank God you have it right God is not the author of confusion! God only can save ...as the Bible teachers and Calvin echoed. As MLJ truly stated but only man can do himself...repent and believe in God's gospel of truth. Both God predestined, called and saved His elect...but also man must believe. Thank God for these truths even if we can not fully grasp!!

@@truth_merchant7839 ah put that's the interesting part...we are condemned because of our sin , all of us, but those that believe are saved. 1 Cor 2: 6,8 and 9,14. How do we believe then? Only 1 answer ..1 Cor 2:10,12!! The power of the Holy Spirit has revealed it and now we can believe and be saved. Only only only God saves, anything else is another God,Jesus..until the Spirit comes we are dead spiritually...God gives us what we need to believe and be saved the rest is His Deut 29:29. Don't ever think one can save himself that is a blasphemy against the God who sent His Son to die from those who believe by the Holy Spirit and are saved. Also we are condemned by our sin, no work of God..He just judges that sin. Difficult for us to grasp two truths...God's Sovereign action and our believing. But clearly both truths are Biblical.

@@davidyingling4873 Beloved, there you go again proving my point about context. When the word "dead" is used in that context it refers to separation not an inability to respond to the gospel preached. As in the book of revelation where Christ told the Church of Sardis that they were "dead". Here is Christ is talking to believers so he is not saying to them that they can't respond to him(they already have) but rather their actions do not represent Christ and thus is separating him from them. For this reason it is written " thy sins have separated you from your God". By the way, what happens to babies who die in the womb and out the womb?

When you take a philosophy that develops from man and superimpose it on God's word you can't help but come to incoherent conclusions; very similar to what atheist say about morality (that it's illusory) simply because they refuse to believe in The God that makes knowing good from evil possible. We have no scripture that says God has chosen men for hell and others for eternity in heaven, we find that the bible calls all men to repent, that God desires that all men come to the knowledge of the truth and that He is patient not desiring that any should perish. We have a responsibility to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, and yet we have this responsibility because God has given salvation as a free gift.
