Here is a list of the 10 must-have cardmaking supplies from the video:
1. Good heavy cardstock (white, cream, kraft- I like the Recollections heavyweight from Michaels)
2. Scissors & paper trimmer (I recommend Cutterbee micro tip scissors from EK success: amzn.to/2KXWfZa ) This is the newer version of the xacto trimmer I have: amzn.to/2KSf147 and this is the compact (safer) trimmer I showed, EK Success changed the name and color but I think it is the same thing: amzn.to/2QeqJM4
3. Decorative paper (I recommend the 4.5”x6.5” mat stacks or 6”x6” pads for cardmaking as the prints are smaller and you will have less waste.)
4. Sentiment stamps in a non-decorative font for occasions like happy birthday, thank you, congratulations etc
5. Image stamps (flowers, scenery, butterflies and other nonspecific images will work for most occasions. Ask yourself “how many ways can I use this?” before buying)
6. Waterproof black ink pad (Ranger Archival amzn.to/2Sx4C0p ) and mini dye-based ink pads for colors (like Memento Dew Drops: amzn.to/2zBCeDd )
7. Water-based markers or watercolor pencils amzn.to/2PlLlwZ (Very versatile and small investment and the markers can double as ink pads and be used to write a sentiment if you have no stamp for it)
8. Acrylic stamp block
9. Dry and wet adhesive (I recommend the Scotch ATG gun: amzn.to/2UiO5Pp and Zip Dry Glue: amzn.to/2PnOv3i )
10. Embellishments: You can collect ephemera to decorate your cards like clothing tags, buttons, tickets, ribbons and trim, and other pretty packaging or you can but embellishments that you like. Just make sure you don’t go overboard buying a certain type until you know your card making style. I love small wooden die cuts but rarely use stickers for instance. You can repurpose supplies from other crafts too!

I have enough supplies to teach adult crafting classes at me and my husband's house. 😂🤣 Though I should mention... I've been a crafter for fourteen years, so I've acquired the things I use year-round over time.
Great advice! It's taken me 3 yrs to figure out that I have way more stuff than I need. I find you to be the most level headed craft teacher on CZcams. You aren't pushing all the "trends" which is what gets most of us in trouble. Who doesn't want to have the latest, lol. But if you aren't using it ......? I'm learning to store things at the store. That piece of advice has stayed with me and I thank you.
I was watching another video a few minutes ago and I looked over to my right and seen a woman that I thought looked just like you except for her hair. I said to myself "they could be sisters they look so much like each other". I decided to watch her video and lo and behold it was you. I had a good laugh at myself. Your hair looks very nice. It is the same color as mine. TFS all you do. You are a wonderful teacher.
What great advice. When I first started I bought everything! As I went along I realized that much of what I bought I never used. It drained my budget and created clutter I am still dealing with years later. Your encouragement to build your collection slowly and buy thoughtfully is so valuable. Thanks for sharing your experience.
donate your excess - scouting troops, senior center, Boys & Girls Club. It saved me from craft overload!
I bargain shop at Tuesday Morning to try new stuff but make sure you buy quality items. I’ve had many products for 20 years now and they still provide me pleasure. If you decide you don’t like the craft, donate your supplies to your local grade school .... but I don’t know how anyone wouldn’t LOVE to create beautiful pieces of art. My aunt recently died and when I was cleaning out her apartment, I found a box full of all the cards I made her (bout 8/yr) for the past 20 years, some framed on her bedroom walls. So go slow into the craft and enjoy yourself!!
Excellent and informative video for beginners, Lindsay! I soooo wish I had done my due diligence before I began my card making journey about 4 yrs ago. If I could add 'my two cents' it would be, "although there will be overwhelming temptations to buy all kinds of paper crafting supplies, trust me when I say that LESS is MORE", particularly when you are a beginner. In other words, the more 'stuff' you have, the harder it will be to pick something out. In retrospect, I actually feel that you will develop a more creative mindset when you are forced to come up with a variety of ideas to use any particular product, especially when it comes to stamps. I hope that helps a beginner because although I have a great passion and feel blessed to have found this craft, it is an expensive hobby and can easily get out of control. So be wise my crafty friends and enjoy the journey! Thanks Lindsay!
i tend to check out dollar store for ideas, as we have NO specialty stores in this "one horse" town & i'm unable to drive the distance to the ones I know of! I have found a few things at our local w.mart...but very few!
You see.... I read this advice from experts when I was noobie, but I still ignored it cos I wanted everything.... and now I’m overwhelmed and understand what you meant... but oh, what a rush it was buying stuff! I think I actually enjoy shopping for stuff more than creating, they’re definitely two separate hobbies! 😂😂😂

I agree with all info. To add to my stash I check eBay for used items especially stamps and stencils. Four yrs ago when I decided to purchase Distress ink pads, I was lucky enough to get a “lot” on eBay that had 8 sets of 4 mini new pads for only $36.
I would have loved to see a video like this when I first started card making! It is very informative, and will be so helpful to new card makers!

Love the wisdom of this video! Wish I’d had it before I started a year ago. LOL! One splurge I made though was a Tim Holtz Stamping Platform which I fortunately got with a 50% off coupon. That was a game changer for me as I wasn’t very good at stamping at first. I definitely overbought 12x12 paper pads at first which was a total waste of money! Those 6x6 pads are much more efficient. I really enjoy your videos and have even started trying my hand at some simple water coloring - which is crazy since I’m already retired!! LOL!
Not crazy! After retirement is a great time to start new things.
Not crazy at all, I was forced to retire 20yrs earlier than planned, due to ill health & I've done so many new things since. Enjoy your retirement, you worked hard for it.
I cut every sheet of 12x12 I had left into 4 6x6 sheets and suddenly found I used them up way quicker! Often meant I had 4 of each design and so I was less careful and precious ;)

All so many great reminders!! I started watching you a few years ago (2013 or so) when I wanted information on coloring and stamping, then card making in general. Then I realized that you crochet, so I watched your videos on that. Then you got me interested in watercolor painting... Now, in the past, I mostly called myself a writer and editor, but you have opened my eyes to the fact that I am an artist as well. So thank you for that!! I have to remember so much of what you said here about keeping things simple... Love the hair color, btw! It does look great on you. I've had short hair myself, it looks great on you!
Your suggestions are so true. I overdid, and often get exactly in the predicament you describe. I definitely will recommend Annie’s kits and your “A Beginner’s Guide to Cardmaking” video. I’m also more encouraged to purge. Do you have specific places to donate? Donating pigment ink pads to pre-schools is not a very good idea? Thanks for all you’ve done for viewers, but also the many you tube presenters who watch and recommend you to others. Keep it up as long as it brings you joy.
I first call my local elementary school and ask if they can use them. If you have enough of an item they usually can. Or senior centers. Girl and boy scout troops are good places too.

Great advice, as always! I didn’t have the benefit of buy slowly advice when I entered this wonderful hobby and it is the advice I most wished I HAD had! I have almost spent more $$ organizing than in craft supplies! LOL. I am on a strict crafting diet these days and am enjoying what I find in things I already have. I have never made a card in my life, watched this video, bought watercolor cards plus few things you mentioned in this video and have been making cards for weeks. It’s been so much fun! Usually I’m spending lots of time on portraits so changing things up has been great! Thanks for this video and, of course, all the great card making videos that are teaching me so much. I JUST starting getting into cards...haven't really even made any yet. But I got a great deal on a cuttlebug and I have the Cricut Maker and a good friend that has been doing them for a few years.
This was a great video and actually answered a lot of the questions I had today while I walked around Joanns, unsure what to get to start w/. Esp the ink and stamps.

I started making cards about 20 years ago and you are so SPOT ON with your advice! You even taught this ol' gal a thing or two. :) I always wondered why anyone would want those little stamp pads - but you explained it perfectly! I might have to go get a set of the small ones for myself. ;) You could not be more right when you say that if you don't use something - it's not a bargain. I wish I had learned that lesson a little earlier in my crafting life. Thank you for all that you do! You inspire me in so many ways and it is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the video Lindsay. When I first started card making I bought a bunch of things that I wish I hadn’t wasted money on. I had seen a few videos using a particular brand of stamps, so I rushed out to buy them and everything else used in the video. I was unaware that stampers make videos for new releases. My style of cards don’t really fit in with all of the supplies I first purchased, now they just sit taking up space.

I have the Exacto paper cutter. I've had it for at least 15 years. It's still sharp, too. It also cuts with more precision (for me) than the other types of cutters. I do have a couple of them, but I use my Exacto cutter the most.
I've been watching your videos for years, and find them very useful. I just wanted to say that I like your new hair colour. It makes you look younger. Please take this as a compliment.

Oh wow! I have that exact same heavy duty paper cutter! It kinda weighs a ton but it cuts SOOOOOOOOOO well!! Mine is also a dinosaur, but as sharp as ever! Now to find a more portable desk sized trimmer for the smaller stuff. Love your videos Lindsay - thank you!

I couldn't. Shop for cards at Christmas so I made some in hospital, all I was allowed to use was water color pencil and a water brush. I had no ink stamps or sentiments . I used scraps of wrapping paper the library cart lady brought from the wrapping room. I made 6 cards for my family before I couldn't get out of bed . And I had to use water color paper. Love you and your family.
What a great video for beginning card makers! I started with over shopping and not knowing what to do with them; I got overwhelmed and I am doing almost nothing. I have done enough to know that every tool you mentioned will be useful for years. You also mentioned every stumbling block new card makers can fall into and waste money and time. Especially, "Don't spend all your time shopping instead of creating. " I'd like to mention another place where you can get stuck. All experienced card makers have taken the time to figure out what they want to create, and their favorite tools. Many designers also work with a large group of creators who create beautiful products. PROBLEM - I want them all and I want to be exactly like what every designer I am watching. WHAT I LEARNED - Designers want their products to sell. Many times you can find less expensive ways to create projects AND as a creator - you have to be you if you really want to be happy and create projects that fit with how you want to touch other's hearts. That takes time. Time I wasted shopping, and wasted money. I now want to be me and have figured out what I want to create and how I want to touch others hearts. When I am tempted to buy a new product, I go back through YOUR VIDEOS on how you can make a DIY version of supplies. If I really like the frugal product, then I can use my money wisely on purchasing products/tools that fit who I am as a creator. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED YOUR VIDEO. And I am going to Annie's to see if I want to subscribe!!! Lindsey, you are truly a gifted teacher who has a heart for beginners.

Great video Lindsay! I got into card making from all of your inspiring videos! I recently got your Let it Snow stamp set from peg stamps and was wondering if you could do a video using it to make the ornaments? The double use of this stamp set is what really drew me to it, but I’m having a hard time lining up the circle and was wondering if you could demo how you designed it to be used?

I love a wood mounted stamp for larger images it seems to work so much nicer, but I really am a clear mounted girl 90% of the time.

So glad you mention paper other than NEENAH SOLAR WHITE! I seem to hear that product name mentioned in **every single recent video** from so many of the popular youtube crafters. I understand that it might be superior for Copic coloring or certain applications, but I hear them mention this (very pricey) product name even when all they are doing is gluing or taping watercolor paper or bristol cardstock to the front of it and using it as a base. I would not be surprised if they are paid simply for mentioning it in their videos. Thank you always for looking out for us crafters with a very limited budget!
