The scant few dwarves of Nökortorad continue to forge their tiny dwarven outpost into a place they can call home..or at the very least, survive in. Can the new faces come to terms with this new, terrifying reality? Or will they make things worse for intrepid Stakud?

The little dwarf girl running into a combat zone to get her kitty and then being caught up in the action seemed like the Hollywood action movie trope. That was awesome.

How odd! In my most recent fortress, a blind cave ogre climbed out of a lava lake I had discovered deep beneath my fortress, it had made it’s way up to the surface…to listen to my tavern bards music! It also just wandered around the base until it left, not a drop of blood was spilled. My goodness I love this game, thanks Krugg for getting me into DF! ❤
It heard the tunes from all the way down there and had to check it out xD
On the opposite side to that, I had a Gorlak come up, I let her in because I thought they were peaceful creatures, and she wandered around the fort for a bit until suddenly grabbing a dog by the nose and getting mauled by said dog.

… Sounds like some kinda fairytale. I wonder if at some point, we’ll get procedurally generated folklores in DF. Knowing Toady, it’s probably not a question of if, but rather when it’ll happen. >):^]
In one of mine I discovered the magma sea when a intelligent undead fell down a volcano and survived for most of it
@@toryumau6798acts basically legend mode lol. You could easily write a short fairy tale from some of the more interesting legends.
Something about this fort really strikes the soul of Dwarf Fortress for me. A doomed expedition with a lone survivor, who claws their way back into relative success. But the shadow of the true goal, defeating an unkillable monster, looms over every success these dwarves have.
Loving it so far, looking forward to more in the future! You’ve really outdone yourself with the art, sound effects and editing
Your production value has improved so much. I'm especially glad you've still included your drawings along with the Steam UI! They're so charming. The SFX and overlays are great too. Looking forward to more of your vids in 2023 :)
I miss Sound Sense immensely. Not having those audible alerts makes microing a bit harder since you have to keep an eye on everything or try to anyways.

Stakud seems like shes fueled by revenge, started with nothing, and is slowly working her way up for a revenge match with the giant undead beast I imagine.

Then there is me, covered in snow and ice, flights canceled, some jobs canceled and I dont want to shovel again for the 3rd time this week xD
Or you could have it like me. Completely bare one day, snow storm that turns the whole world white and causes massive chaos and then bare again and raining the day after that.

I had just checked if he had done something new, like an hour or two before he dropped this lol
as a note, it’s sort of interesting how little farmland you actually need to feed dwarves. When fully optimised you can feed more than a hundred dwarves with a single 3x3 farm plot.
But do you want to risk feeding an entire city/keep with only one small 3x3 plot though?

One thing to keep in mind Krugg, your tree area is probably going to need to be at least 3 z levels high. I tried growing my own fungus tree zone before, and either I didn't wait long enough or 2 z-levels wasn't enough. I waited over a year after the first saplings showed up.
I'm so invested in this story! Can't wait to celebrate the downfall of this cyclops with a nice ale. And you're killing it with the production quality. Love the art and smattering of voiced lines, but also all the sound effects must take forever and they really add a lot! Thanks for making these! (And thanks for showing me how to replenish the floor fungus pasture my animals have eaten through)

Remember that there are no happy endings in Dwarf fortress.
I think what happens with burrows now is that assigned dwarves will only accept tasks that come from within the burrow. So if you want them to go there immediately, assign them to it and then click the symbol that looks like a body next to their name in either the tasks menu (t) or the units menu (u). That button makes them stop whatever tasks they’re currently doing.
Auto-generated captions are a gem with dwarven names. Stack HUD, Thigh Cut, Stack God, Fat Cut, etc.
Fat Cut sounds like a butcher. XD

On Steam updates: Steam actually does support older versions. Right click the game on your library list. -> Hit 'Properties'. -> Go to 'Betas'. If everything is set up correctly older versions of the game should be accesable via the drop down on the betas screen (though ones that are years old may eventually get dropped from the list).
Just checked, there are no betas of past versions of DF on steam yet. Hopefully soon. Until then, the best bet is to copy the entire DF installation and paste it somewhere steam can't access it, like a custom folder on your desktop.
@Andrew That just delays the updates to a 'on-demand' basis. You cant circumvent steam updating your game once an update releases and you wish to play said game, other than common workarounds that drop steam entirely out of the launch chain for that game.
Between the struggle for survival, the interesting characters, and villains, I am absolutely loving this series

ive never played dwarf fortress, always been a red alert c&c guy. This makes this game so deep and so interesting. The detail and history of each monster and traveller... ect, is mind boggling. The way the text decribes combat doesnt need to show it, it paints a picture in your head, which could be worse then any image. Had to watch again, the art makes it so awesome.
Love it! The steam edition graphism are also making it more pleasing to the eyes. I'm also always impressed by those drawnings!
And the music too! Just great!
"I have been considering the Ideal of Death" has got to be the best thing for a dwarven edge lord to say as stock phrase.
The storytelling with the draws makes this the only DF let’s plays that let me interested to watch from beginner to end multiple episodes
The fight scene in the caves was amazing.
Perhaps the most immersive and exciting Dwarf Fortress series I've ever seen and it has been a source of great inspiration for me. Truly, all craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.
2:45 i find quite funny and fitting that a 14 year old dwarf has a fully grown beard like an old man.
Something that I like about the way you set things up, is that during the behind the scenes I can come here in the comments and read or write things while I listen.

Skullhorror might be my favorite story of the channel, mainly because of the badass undead designs, so I'm glad we get to see more of them. Always happy to see more Krugg content.

One thing you could sometimes do was create a military squad and order them into a spot. Military squads had their own behaviours though, they would interpret that as an assault order and try to whack things in sight.
This is quickly turning into one of my favourite series here
Dude your art has gotten so, so good while retaining your own style. It adds so much to your work. I just have to shout it out. Your editing is also fantastic, particularly the audio adds so much to immersion. I usually have videos playing on my second monitor while I'm working and I consistently stop what I'm doing because I'm drawn in by your videos.
Honestly, I don't know how you turn everything into a masterpiece like this... Yet another extremely well told and fascinating story!
I was so tense when everyone was in the cave. When they were leaving and there was no music I was sure Stack got bit. I know that it's foolish to get attached in a reanimating biome but you're making me care about all of them. Even Lor

Krugg, you might be able to set the game not to update automatically. Then you could update manually between forts.
Adding on to this, in steam you can right click a game then select properties to choose your version. That's also probably where the setting is
Tarn has said that the saves should keep working even with updates since there aren't really map changes happening. Especially if you don't use mods; you'll be fine. Some bug fixes will only apply to new worlds, but the old ones will keep working for the forseeable future.
I can't wait for the undead forgotten beasts.

Stakud might be my favorite "leader Dwarf" to date. While some were charismatic and rose to power and others were natural leaders and power sort-of came to them, Stakud really doesn't belong here. She's a nervous wreck who's not built for fighting, but Urist be damned, she's a survivor! Also, I really love how you draw and design clothes for the Dwars. IT really gives them so much character.
Hope she lives long enough to marry into one of the more established Clans.

I love these series where we really get to know the personality of some specific dwarves.
I got so worried when the cat went into the caves was holding my breath the whole time that darn cat is too cute/important to end up becoming a zombie.
This has been incredibly exciting to watch so far, can't wait to see what they do next. You made that fighting scene incredibly tense to watch.
Edit: rewatching that scene, the game's OST was well placed there.
Fantastic episode! I hope the Steam version will use the trick where key versions are registered as beta branches so you can roll things back as breaking changes come in.

I loved that fighting music scene. It was just great seeing the dwarves clearing the area without unnecessary commentary. Not to say the commentary before was bad, the transition was perfect.

The heart you poured into this one is clear from the get-go. Your wonderful artwork and narrative tone and pacing has always done so much of the heavy lifting in terms of story telling for me, and was the main draw for me to subscribe to your channel. That, coupled with the visual updates to the game itself have only worked to make the environmental aspects of the tales so much more clear, at least to someone like me, who is new to Dwarf Fortress.

One of my friends introduced me to your channel a few months ago and I've quickly fallen in love with your content! Been binging a ton of your series, both long and short. Your ability to take these game events and weave them into a narrative is wonderfully done. Really excited to see what you and Stakud can do to make this fortress thrive!
One lesson of dwarf fortress is that you can prepare all you want, but it won't prevent bad things from happening. But it wouldn't be dwarf fortress if you couldn't lose everything because of something like an update.
