Re the North vs South big fish discussion, its entirely down to one thing .. forget temps etc (thats just an excuse), its food availability to each individual fish; pure and simple. The angling cultures are completely different. In the south, carp anglers are quite happy fishing for 30 carp in 30 acres. Up north the stock would be buggered about with until its nearer 500 or even a thousand fish in a similar sized venue. The same applies to other species. Northerners are generally not happy if they have to go looking for fish, or have to work at it and while waters of the low density/large acreage type are becoming less prevalent down south, they are far more common than in the north.
Find a big Northern water with the correct characteristics (clear, relatively deep but not too deep and weedy) that hasn't been run by an angling club or otherwise had the stocks pxssxd about with and the chances are it WILL have big fish of some description. Unfortunately we constantly ruin the opportunities that we do have up north.

Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) and Crucian Carp (Carassius Carassius) are part of the same species and hybridise very easily. F1's can be a Carp and a goldfish or a Carp and a crucian.
