  • A solar tube (also called a sun tunnel) is a great way to get some natural light into your home at just a fraction of the price of skylights, but that doesn't mean they're going to be the right choice for every homeowner. This video looks at the pros and cons of solar tubes so that you can make sure it's exactly what you're looking for.

    We have 5 solar tubes in our home and they're awesome. We also have the nightlight option, which makes it great at night to see without turning on a light. The nightlight option more than paid for itself because that makes the whole cost eligible for the federal energy credit.

      @@sheenawalker1751 It's a small LED light that has a small solar panel attached to charge the single AA battery that lights it in the dark. Velux sells them with their solar tubes.

    Are solar tubes more prone to hailstorm or tornado damages than regular shingle roof? Also, I was told in a tornado warning to hide in an enclosed room without any windows, do solar tubes or skylights equate to windows for tornado hideout purposes?

    Question: how much effect does it have when it's cloudy weather? And would it still have effect if placed close to a vertical wall? In that case the sunlight can directly reach the tube up untill 1pm, but no longer after that.
    Thanks in advance

    Definitely insulated duct to avoid condensation in the uninsulated attic

    We have tongue and groove ceilings. The T&G is about 1.5” thick. We’ll be adding insulation so total space between the composite shingles and the bottom of the T&G (as seen from the interior) might be about 6”. Would the SolaTube product work well for such a short run with little/no opportunity for reflection in the tube?
    We’re considering SolaTube because it has an option to include electrical lighting for nighttime or when it is overcast/raining.

      That situation it better a smaller skylight,a solar tube might be hard to connect from the lenses and outside lense

    Can the roof lens supply mire than 1 ceiling. Light if they are in cliser proximity?? Such as a "great room" a large room that could benefit from simiar amt of ceiling lighting. For a larger connected floor space. IE connected Living rm. Dining rm and Family rm.( in an "L" shape)?

      I have been wondering if you could install a skylight, but box it in underneath with reflective material and then run these reflective tubes from that in order to provide light to multiple rooms. Kind of like a junction box for sunlight. Only would have to cut one hole in the roof.

    One question which I can't find an answer to is whether solar tubes can transmit sound from outdoors, e.g. traffic noise, into the home. Depending on the type of fixture, you can get sound transmission through gas furnace or water heater exhaust pipes, or through some bathroom vents. I am wondering if a solar tube would do the same.

    • @alexanderjamieson7971
      @alexanderjamieson7971 Před rokem +5

      I think it would definitely amplify rain noise and ambient outdoor noises. Probably the only way to reduce this is to insulate around the ducting, which is probably necessary to reduce condensation from humidity

      polish plastic with toothpaste -just the same as car headlights, the top surface gets cloudy from sunlight. try it.

    Another con compared to a sky light is that with a regular pitched roof with a loft space the solar tube passes through the loft space and illuminates the room below. A skylight is fine for lighting the loft space or if the loft space has been converted into a usable room.

    • @1voluntaryist
      @1voluntaryist Před 8 měsíci

      Why couldn't a solar tube work for a short distance? It doesn't open up for air flow, but that means it doesn't leak or cost nearly as much to install or maintain.

    • @harrygatto
      @harrygatto Před 8 měsíci

      @@1voluntaryist If you're going to use a solar tube to carry light for such a short distance you are defeating the object of the solar tube and making its use pointless. For the same amount of light that a solar tube would pass in such circumstances you might as well use a circular porthole light. In either case a proper skylight would allow in much more light, a solar tube is really designed to emulate a ceiling light.

    • @1voluntaryist
      @1voluntaryist Před 8 měsíci

      @@harrygatto Wrong. A solar tube skylight is designed to provide sunlight, NOT "emulate" artificial light. It has many benefits over a traditional skylight. What is a "circular porthole light"?
