    If you have too much slack in the pinion shaft you can take seal housing off of front and there are different size shims behind there. Start by taking out the thinnest shim and reassemble. If still not enough simply remove another shim. Also, you can put seal in easily with retainer plate off. There is another old trick you can use if you're yoke has a worn spot where seal has been riding. Use a shoulderless seal and press it in just a little deeper an it will ride on a different spot on yoke. Good for another few hundred thousand miles.

    You make some damn good videos! Cuz of you, I can mess with pretty much anything on my truck. Turns out whenever I need to fix something. I watch one of your videos. Go out and buy any tools that's your using. And basically replicate what you are doing. It's nice to have some guidance. Thank you very much for that. Have a good one.

    probably the reason the pinion yoke was loose to begin with is a bad pinion bearing. iam no expert by any means just know what my brother taught me about differentials. great videos i really enjoy them.

      try using an old 1/2 inch extension for a drift and a 3 or 4 pound hammer in that plug and give it a couple real good whacks and that should loosen it.

  • @jameshood3692
    @jameshood3692 Před 5 lety +2

    I know you couldnt of really waited but i wouldve highly recommended a new yoke as the yoke should not slide off that easy even with a small screwdriver and a new nut and never put oil on the outside of the seal as the blue you see is like a glue and seals the O.D. of the seal to the bearing cover and i would also recommend to never reuse the strap kit as those straps are stamped steel do stretch over the trunnions and when you reuse them can cause the trunnions to spin inside the yoke and cause you to do the job again only with a new u-joint and yoke but i know you were pressed with time

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  Před 5 lety +1

      The yoke didn't slide off that easy, I cut out the 2 or 3 minutes of hammering and prying from the video. I've heard 1 or 2 people say not to put oil on the outside of the seal but I like to do it anyway to help it go in, it won't make it leak. Thanks for watching.

  • @Ezrider359
    @Ezrider359 Před 5 lety +3

    good job. must be pinion seal season...lol i just had to do one on my truck a few weeks ago. 1/2 inch impact is a bit small for running down your pinion nut though. torque spec is around 800 ft lbs depending on the exact application. running it down with a healthy 3/4 inch impact is common accepted practice. 1/2 might be able to run that nut down to 4-500 at best.

    • @keithraines298
      @keithraines298 Před 5 lety

      I done one about 6 months ago tightened it with one drive impact then torque to 1000 foot pounds with torque wrench. The impact was only about 750. I had one of those nuts loosen up and fall off and break the thru shaft on the differential so i use a torque wrench to make sure now.

    for an automatic transmission on a class 8 dump truck will a power divider be sufficient for mud-snow driving, or should full differential lock (4) be utilized.

    fyi not the pinion it's the input shaft the pinion is below the input on the front diff it's not uncommon to have a very small amount of movement on the front yoke the RR differential should never have any movement - keep up the good work and take care

  • @stanpatterson5033
    @stanpatterson5033 Před 5 lety +1

    Ha ha...at 11:56 the old seal went flying like a cork off a bottle of bubbly... Have you been topping up the diff with champagne?? Some fine work, Mr. Robertson. Bonus points for powering right through the rain, though it looks like it didn't rain too hard or last very long. Some guys doing a job like this would feel the need to use 2-and-a-half cans of brake cleaner to get rid of any evidence of the leak. Myself, I'd have wiped the excess off with a rag, and left the damp spots to act as rust inhibiter.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 Před 5 lety

      p.s. I wonder if greasing the U-joint lightly prior to pulling the shaft would have given more grease for the cap to have stayed in place, it fell off pretty much by gravity after it grazed the yoke as you were scooting the shaft over to the side.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  Před 5 lety

      More grease probably would have helped.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  Před 5 lety

      I used diesel to clean the gear case, only in front where I was working, I think I did spray some brake cleaner on after wiping off the diesel.

      That’s your thrushaft. Check your yoke for grooves as well. It should be replaced if grooved up badly. Also make sure to check for play, if it’s loose that could also be your problem

    I have same problem on my truck and I went to the shop " Wayne truck and trailer ltd" 2151 S Vandermark Rd Sydney OH.... and I ask them can they fix it for me. By the way I am from Canada and when they see me hungers game begins. First they said it is bad bearing and I said ok, fix it please. Then they told me we have to open first to see the size of bearing maybe they have on stock maybe not. Again I said do it. In meantime nobody touching my truck. Two hours later guy his name is Mark telling me he find size of bearing on his computer but they don't have on stock, they need to order. I said ok, how longs is gonna take? Well we can get it by Monday morning and day when I was at the shop was Wednesday. What? Monday!!! Yes, sorry about that it is so hard to get parts right now. But we would recommend to replace differential and we can get rebuild one also on Monday. But I don't need differential I need new seal and maybe bearing. Yea but you know what when we open its could be something wrong it is better to order new differential. I was wondering how far they will go and ask what will be the price for differential? You are looking around $7000. No Sir , no thank You, please order bearing and that's it. Ok I would give you estimate soon as i get info. I said ok. I pull out my truck out of the shop because I already prepare myself to sit there until Monday and they said wait!!! You have to pay something I came back inside and $138 for diagnose and shop supply. So they tell me basically what I told them and they charging me for that. Anyway I paid my bill go outside and get bored in my truck so I decided to check some things by myself. I take it off oil check bolt from behind clean it. I take it off bolt for oil drain. Then I drain little bit of oil into the pan and put back already cleaned bolt which was on the top for oil level check to stop oil. I looked carefully into the pan no any metal pieces only metal dusty little bit on that bolt because it's magnetic bolt. Now I figurate I don't have problem with differential at all, so I took of bolt on the top of differential using for Air bread and thrue that holl I ad engine oil up to maximum. In meantime around four hours after our last conversation Mark coming back to me and saying this. I found the bearing and I can order for you but it will be here on Monday. I was pretending I am still interested and I said ok how much that gonna cost me ? He said $3000 but I would recommend you to order differential. Who knows what if is not only bearing problem then you gonna stuck more days. I told him you know what let me talk with my dispatch and I will let you know. In my company I am everything, driver, dispatch, so actually I was telling him I have to speak with my self 😀😀😀. Soon as he turn around I was ready to leave this shity place. Basically I spent all day with them for nothing when they was trying to convince me to replace differential instead of seal. So I run away to Memphis TN, finish my delivery and get loaded again going back to Canada. I only stop every 5-6 hours and add little bit of engine oil (1 gallon ) and keep going. Then I remembered Gordon have always great videos maybe I can see how he do and I found it. Thank You Gordon, you are the best. And guys please DON'T GO NEVER EVER to that shop what I wrote above, NEVER!!!

      I'll be 62 later this summer. I see no reason why you can't do your own repairs as long as you want to. I have a neighbor friend who is a retired driver and cuts grass for about 25 people and does almost all of his own maintenance and repairs on his equipment and is in his mid 70's.
