Well, a fair society has a price. A lot of people don't want to pay it though.
It's about equality in the sense of a fair start for everyone and that simply costs a lot of money and as a German I know what I'm talking about quite well.
My university is free. My taxes are higher when I actually make money but because of that, I will be able to contribute a lot more to society than if it would cost thousands of Euros to study.
That isn't true for everyone but the idea that to advance society you need to give it's people the best start is true everywhere in the world. Economically, countries like Japan, South Korea and much of western Europe are the shining examples for this concept and even in the US, the Silicon Valley was the result of government funding. A society that let's loose whoever has the most power is unjust.
Capitalism is good as long as it's being controled. If you let it loose, you get slums and ghettos filled by those who didn't make it. Some people tolerate this, others oppose it. I am proud to pay my part because morally, without much doubt the idea of social capitalism is superior to classic liberal capitalism.
Some may disagree but I have yet to meet someone that could prove anything else.
Indeed, we pay way too much taxes especially the Flemish, and the worst part is: none of us can’t exactly say where that money goes. But everyone has a guess, my guess is that the most of the money goes to healthcare and pharmacy, we have very very good healthcare but the pharmacy companies are swimming in the money, in a bad way. I have a somewhat dumb question: defining a higher/lower tax rate by the percentage it occupies in the overall gdp of a nation isn't a bit inacurate?

Sorry if it's a very basic/dumb question my knowledge of economics is shallow to say the least.

Now imagine you're taxed with no representation, and some people an ocean away are trying to decide how best to pinch more money out of you, with little knowledge or care how your local economy/businesses work. That's what was happening for the American colonies.
Alright, considering the "France #1" ranking :
I'd like to point something out regarding the definition of "tax" : in France, a large portion of private revenues is forcibly taken by State agencies to be allocated to social programs.
Chiefly : retirement pensions (~14% of GDP) and health insurance (~11% of GDP), making just these 2 programs 25% of GDP.
(Note : the money allocated to these 2 items is not referred to as a "tax" but as an "insurance contribution", since the State cannot take that money to do something else with it. Retirement and Healthcare are part of the "Sécurité Sociale", a public, monopolistic insurance company created in the 40's)
Now, consider a hypothetical country in which pensions and health insurance are entirely privately run.
That would be a 25% "tax cut" compared to France since the State doesn't take that money, but by no means an actual saving for the general population, who will either have to pay for it through "private taxes" (private healthcare plans or retirement funds) or not pay for it but settle for lower pensions and health services.
A stellar example is the United States, where the GDP share for healthcare is ~15%, which is on average 8900 $ per inhabitant, 50% of which is public funds
=> That's 4450 $ / inhabitant of public contribution.
Compare this to France with health expenses representing ~11% of GDP, which is 4200 $ per inhabitant, 80% of which is public funds
=> That's 3360 $ / inhabitant of public contribution.
Let's call "individual health tax" (IHT) the last figure, i.e. the average amount of money forcibly taken by State agencies from private earnings to finance the healthcare system.
And let's call "individual total health contribution" (ITHC) the first figure, i.e. the total average amount of money provided by each individual, be it to private or public institutions.
In this example, the USA IHT is only 1.3 times that of France. However, its ITHC is exactly 2 times that of France. That's a pretty big difference.
Granted, this is not the best example ; maybe I should have gone with retirement plans or another country like Germany.
But I wanted to point out that in order to give a general idea of how "taxing" a country is to its citizens, we should also consider "private taxes", as well the average individual cost (rather than just considering plain cost/GDP, consider cost/inhabitant).
There would be a lot to say about the personal freedom aspect, programs efficiency, and all sorts of stuff, but you get the point I'm trying to put across.
Jesus, did I really spend 30 minutes researching, calculating, and redacting a CZcams comment about taxation ?
Anyway, lemme know if you spot an error in my argument, I'd be happy to correct it.
Thank you very much for the translation, I read everything from the beginning to the end 2 times and everything became clear to me. I remember the 45th place.
""tax" but as an "insurance contribution", since the State cannot take that money to do something else with it"
No, it's a tax, because not everyone wants "insurance contribution". Also the State can do something else with it, like allocate it preferably to some groups of people, or simply waste it ("functioning costs").
"Sécurité Sociale" is a scam pushed by low IQ losers (collectivists) and tyrannic people upon the general population. Always has been.
@@bamezu7165 *speaks in spooks*
I would probably change the title to what the video claims is actually bein shown: "Countries with taxes providing the highest percentage of their GDP." @Dex4Sure Close enough
@Dex4Sure that is why we got this life expectancy :-b
@Dex4Sure I guess ur not a fan of 'socialism' and welfare and free(good) education and free medical system and so on?
The american system isn't really as great as they want it to sound fyi. Unless ur rich of course.
@Dex4Sure We can tell you were a bad student. Anyway, private health system is only better than public one if you have top 1% best hospitals in the world in your city, otherwise public system beats private health. In Europe where public health has the monopole, private health is always worse for serious stuff and better only to correct your teeth and your skin grains without waiting longtime. If you have a cancer, they redirect you to the better, cheaper, faster public system.
Also public schools don't teach you how to pay taxes or vote neither, not everything is taught in schools. Well, technically in public economy or business degrees you are taught about becoming an entrepreneur.
As a Swede I've only had to pay around 1/3 tax. Never heard of anyone paying 44%, that's crazy high
are you taking into account sales taxes, property taxes and other hidden taxes?
@@Skankhunt-mv4vd I'm only talking about my income tax
@@GandalfGreyhame well those other kinds of taxes add up really fast. Income taxes are not all of taxes
No you didn't understand the video ,It's in % of the GDP so for example ,nearly 50% of the GDP Come from the tax citizen pay .
(Also in France ,you can be taxed for 53% of your income if your Alone and if you are the leader of thing like Walmart ,Carrefour ,IKEA etc... You will literally give more than 70% of your income to the governement )
What are you talking about? The highest earners pay more than 50% and that is AFTER the hidden tax of social security taxes your employer pays of around 31%.
Everyone should have the freedom to choose where their taxes go
That's what happens when you don't pay taxes in the first place.
that no data had me dead
