I was an atheist for over 20 years and I don't remember ever crying even once, but when I finally became Catholic and accepted that Jesus is my Savior and I need saving from sin, I bawled like I've never cried before, it was like I was a child when I went to confession and told Jesus my terrible sins. God forgive me

We never hear this anymore, it’s all “sunshine and unicorns”. We absolutely need to meditate on this daily. Thank you for sharing this!

St. Theresa the Little Flower practised something called her 'little way" - small daily penances.

I think that parishioner was right in her observation.many fall away not because God doesn't want them but rather because they perceive it so because they have lost hope. Great penitential saints also had great confidence in the mercy of God. They were moved to tears without losing hope.

I was talking to my therapist about a specific sin that I had already confessed. It was particularly unethical. I was surprised when I began weeping. Weeping heart-broken tears. I felt shame and sorrow. I’ve know God since before the age of reason and I betrayed him like a lifelong pagan. I’m so touched to find that these sorrowful and repentant tears are a part of penance and retribution to mend the broken relationship. Amen amen amen

JMJ+ Praise be to GOD for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We still have a chance for Heaven. But, only if we don't listen to a modernist Priest that somehow thinks sin is no big deal. It's a big deal! O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, and those that do not....amen

I’m a woman whose isn’t very emotional, not matter how awful or repentant I felt, I never cried during confession, I’ve always been terrified of crying in front of others. But every word I speak my voice shakes and I shake with it. I say very little because I don’t want to seem like I’m trying to justify my actions by giving background. My eyes well a little.

Thank you so much for explaining penance. You hear in the Bible from St John the Baptist to repent and be saved at Fatima, Our Lady said to penance but I was still unsure. I am so thick headed but through God’s grace now I can see I have much penance to do! St Bonaventure, pray for us.

What a great homily! Temporal punishment for sin remains. Penance.
