    I have that same Toro mower! My parents bought it brand new around 1963 and it cut our lawn as well as both my grandmas lawns for many years. I remember cutting my grandmas lawn when the muffler fell off while the engine was running. It made one hell of a bang and muffler punched a hole through the aluminum mower deck, but it kept right on going! The engine is definitely a Tecumseh and I'm working on restoring it in memory of my dad. He loved doing yard work and he always had Toro mowers. This was his first, I still have all the paperwork for it.

    I just bought a Biltmore Super 22 with a crank like that. Looked for years, then found this one not far from my home. 31/2 hp Briggs starts, runs. $25. Very happy.

    I used to work on those engines for many years. I used to replace those crank starter springs every day for customers. Actually, all Toros have date codes on the silver label on the back. Those motors have oil bath air cleaners.

    It's a Lauson power product div. by Tecumseh. That blade is one piece. That wind up start is cool as hell and worth a pretty penny because there super hard to come by now. That's a late 60's early 70's. Briggs also made a wind up start for there rotory mowers but it has the logo stamped into the metal. That mower is worth money specifically that engine with the wind up start, the wind up alone is worth out least $100 bucks easy. To bad they don't still make those type of starters today. They had the technology 50 years ago. The safety break prevents lawnmowers from having those now. NICE!

    That is a Tecumseh engine, built in the early to mid 1960's. It's probably a three horsepower. That one-piece S blade was exclusive to Toro.

    That wind up starter can be dangerous. When I was a kid, we had a 1960 Jacobsen mower with this starter and it almost broke my brothers arm. (Jacobsen called it a "safety spin starter" if I remember correctly. How wrong that was.) I think the catch would not hold and it would fly around when you released it with the handle flying outward. I think there was a recall and the dealer replaced the wind up starter with a standard rope pull starter at no charge. 50 some years later, we still talk about that mower and the "Safety Spin Starter".

      @l337pwnage Před 5 lety

  • @marknichols2922
    @marknichols2922 Před 10 lety +1

    Well it's a 1961 or 1962 Whirlwind. Maroon tells that and it's a Lauson engine. Bought by Tehcumseh. It was 3HP. S blade. Great mower. Owned 5 of them.

    It's definitely not a 1966. They were only built in 1964 and 1965. In 1964 they were the 'Golden Whirlwind' to celebrate Toro's 50th anniversary and the front of the shroud had a gold-colored decal. In 1965 the decal on the front of the shroud was changed to silver.
    The grass deflector you have is actually from a later 1972-76. The earlier ones were not as wide.
    Nice mower!

    This is a great mower! I too would be interested in this mower if you ever feel like parting with it or if someone else has one they would like to sell, as my father designed one of the mower's features (crank starter) and I have looked for one from time to time with no success.

    MTD evidently tried to resurrect this concept back in the early 2000's (Yard Works video below.) I found a Troybilt version on the curb, tinkered with it, & it runs good. The "Self Starter" or "Touch & Mow" mechanism contains a spring pack just like this old Toro except that the spring rewinds itself when the engine shuts down. I think it is a neat bit of engineering (self start but no battery to fuss with) but evidently the idea never caught on. Maybe it was too expensive. Anybody know more about these mowers?
