    God, I loved the Super GameBoy. I remember opening Pokemon Blue on Christmas to only to find out that my GameBoy's batteries were dead. Thank goodness for Super GameBoy!

      Indeed! I picked up a dead SNES last year & the Super Game Boy was my first purchase for it before getting any actual SNES games. Great accessory and criminally underappreciated - hence finding your videos on the subject a wealth of knowledge and great viewing :)

    Bought an SGB2 earlier this morning. I've been aware of the peripheral for a long time, and I'm going to have a need for that link cable port in an upcoming playthrough. Decided that, while I was at it, I'd watch some videos on it, which is how I came across yours.
    I wasn't aware that you could unlock the SGB1 borders. Knowing that, owning an SGB2 will pretty much make my SGB1 obsolete. (Though I don't plan on getting rid of it. Too many memories.)

      I had to clip the prongs out of my U.S. SNES so the SGB2 fits, but otherwise it works perfectly.

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  Před 7 lety +3

      +SmaMan That only works on US SNES consoles, unfortunately - Here in Europe we have to get around the 50/60Hz issues, as well as the standard region lockout.

    My plan is to do the game link mod to my SGB1 to have the ultimate SGB! Something you didn't mention in this video is the SGB controller compatibility. I assume that it does not work (the slowdown features) as it is relying on the original SGBs slightly faster clock. Do you know if that is true or if they built a way around it?

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  Před 6 lety +2

      Ah I didn’t realise there was a link mod for the original SGB. The Super Game Boy Commander functionality works absolutely fine with the SGB2 - Infact, you’ll learn all about it in Part 3 of this series :)

    • @71dembonesTV
      @71dembonesTV Před 6 lety

      Pug Hoof Gaming hehe I already did. Great series! Very informative. I'm curious how they accomplished that as I know it doesn't work with an underclock modded SGB (that's why I added a switch to mine)

  • @SmaMan
    @SmaMan Před 7 lety +2

    Great video! As I've mentioned on Twitter the SGB2 is my favorite iteration of the GameBoy's hardware.
    A bit of info for you, but it seems that the SGB2 was actually being sold in the US on QVC in March of 1998. Sadly, it was only a pre-sale, and those units were never actually shipped out. Still, you have to imagine that a few US SGB2s exist in somebody's desk drawer.

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  Před 7 lety

      +SmaMan Thanks, and thank you for the snippet of info, I didn't know that!
      I wonder if QVC's listing was an optimistic pre-sale with an assumption that the unit would be released in the US? '98 was so late in the Super Nintendo's life that I'm not surprised that it didn't end up in the West.

    • @SmaMan
      @SmaMan Před 7 lety

      They were known for doing that. It's a great way to make cash out of hype. It's almost like GameStop (in the U.S.) does today in selling pre-orders for games 3-4 months in advance. They did that with games that actually did come out, like Illusion of Gaia, for example.

    Love my SuperGameBoy2, bought mine at launch, nobody believed me back in 98 it was even real lol was superseded by the GameCubes GameBoyPlayer a peripheral that's simply inexcusable not to own and is without doubt the best piece of 'add on' hardware Nintendo have ever release, basically real GameBoyAdvance hardware (minus a screen) on/in a console 'stand' add to that EXTREMS GBI software(GB/GBC/GBA games in true 240P resolution) and the Cubes GBP is thee definitive way to play all your GameBoy games on a TV! Great video, great content, Oh and at 3.09 the L R code to run the credits you, missed out the first L! lol great video! ;)

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  Před 5 lety +1

      Cheers buddy! I’m still torn between the SGB2 and GBP at the moment. GBP is edging the win right now due to the excellent quality from 240p and component through an OSSC/Framemeister. But, I do miss the SGB borders, and I recently got a 1-chip Super Famicom which I’m waiting to do an RGB bypass and ghosting fix on. Once that’s modded up, it’s going to be even harder to choose!

    • @mattyjenkins9871
      @mattyjenkins9871 Před 5 lety

      Pug Hoof Gaming haha, yeah for the longest time I too was torn but the Cubes GBP mixed with ETREMS GBI, via the CARBY is top dog! It the best way to play ur full GB libary. Don’t get me wrong I love my SGB2 but with the Cube you have access to the Advance games too, so all three library’s(GB/GBC/GBA) and there’s a fair few Advance games that blow my socks off!(AstroBoy/GunStarHerosAdvance/MetalSlugAdvance/GuardianHerosAdvance) being able to tap in to all three library’s defiantly swings it for me! I will say though the SGB2 defiantly looks more pleasing to the eye, translucent Blue, Mmmmm! lol

    Anyone noticed that the color of the cart holder of the Super Game Boy 2 differs?
    I have one that has a black one. Others have a light blue one.
    Is it possible to run this on a PAL SNES with a region converter? :-/

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  Před 6 lety +1

      I must admit, I've not noticed the cart holder colour, but I certainly will keep an eye out!
      I run mine using on a region-modded PAL SNES, but I can't see why this wouldn't work with a region converter.

      @user-rs1990 Před 6 lety

      Heard from 'Adrian Osty Ilsley' that it truly works with a region converter! (i.e. without modding in such ways that cannot be reverted!).

    • @PugHoofGaming

      Not as far as I know. I believe Tetris DX applies the different border on a hardware level (it looks for a hardware address at boot up to detect which Super Game Boy revision is used)

    Hey Lee, I am trying to find out if you can connect a super gameboy 2 to a gameboy advance sp for multiplayer games and what cable I should use? I saw an unboxing video of a gameboy advance sp and there are instructions that lead me to believe that this can be done. I am thinking that I need a universal link cable for this to work. nintendo support was no help. Can you confirm that this will work?

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  Před 5 lety

      Hi Kevin, I’m pretty sure you can. Now this is coming from memory, as the cables are all in boxes right now, if you use a second generation link cable for Game Boy Pocket (MGB)/Game Boy Color (CGB) systems, this should work with the SGB2 and also be compatible with the link port in GBA systems.
      I believe Nintendo did release a Universal Link Cable, as you say - Also worth noting that the cable that comes with the Game Boy printer owe the job as well!

    • @14u2ponder
      @14u2ponder Před 5 lety

      @@PugHoofGaming I just looked at that unboxing video again (I haven't got my SP yet, it's in the mail) and it clearly shows that you can hook it up with the universal cable. Nintendo Support was wrong again.

    I have a question, you know how you can pick custom sets of colors to add a bit of color to the original Game Boy games, well is there any way to custom pick each individual color and save it so that you can make your own custom color set to play with.
