In this episode, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. The GBA was the follow up to the popular Game Boy system, and featured all of Nintendo's hit franchises at the time, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and even Metroid. The system started it life as Project Atlantis, but had several iterations. The Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro were made later in the handheld's life, and the console also had a private adapter to work with the Nintendo 64 (N64), and was emulated on the 3DS and Wii U, and will likely come to the Nintendo Switch. Through our analysis of the console's development, GBA games and their gameplay and beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts from the making of the Game Boy Advance and have its history explained.

ok
DidYouKnowGaming? 2 Anyone notice that the idea for the mobile phone support is much like the Nintendo Switch app for smarthphones
DidYouKnowGaming? 2 cool
ok
The gameboy sp is THICC xD
Okay. I never knew there was a DVD player that played GBA games.
Damn, Nintendo.
I recall an advertisement of it on a magazine, though I don't remember which one; Nintendo Power? Gameinformer? Electronic Gaming Monthly? it's fuzzy to me...
I would totally buy that!
Austen Cho lmao
My Life in Gaming made a video about it.
X2011racer it was Nintendo Power, I remember that too lol
I remember waking up early in the morning so I would have more time to play Pokémon Emerald. Good times man
AcesofJustice man! Me too! Hands down the best pokemon game for me.
Pokémon Emerald was my childhood. My favourite PKM game ever.
AcesofJustice hell yeah. Oh man. where did the years go?
RhythmGrizz its only been 12 years not that long ago.
+xxBluethunderxx123 Not enough
I like how the Game Boy Color was a way of saying "we need more time" lmao, amazing video
Nintendo be like: "game consoles are words to us"
never ceases to amaze me how well the sprites have aged on the gameboy advanced. So much nostalgia while watching this video
2D sprites (Hand drawn variety) tends to have huge advantage over the Motion capture 2D or the 8bit variety.
Aaron its only been 16 years not that long ago.
16 years is long enough, mate.
16 bit to 32 bit sprites NEVER age and will always look fantastic on the gameboy!
The start up jingle gave me childhood flash backs...
The PS1, Saturn, and Dreamcast have that same effect, for me.
It gave me a hardcore erection.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Nice
True, the ps1 start up has that effect on me too. Never had a saturn or dreamcast though, I heard there are some great games for those systems.
same. That cube moving to form the logo will be burnt into my memory forever. Nice username by the way.
Back when backwards compatability was super important
wile123456 still is
Blue Wyvern Not for PS4.
back then nintendo seemed dedicated to make everything work on all their portable hardware, now not so much.
But with the Switch, not so much anymore. Although you could play Wii U games ported to the Switch!
Blue Wyvern the xbox one is the only one who is having proper backwards compatibility. Original Xbox games will soon work on it. However at launch no old games worked, ps4 still has no support aside from digital PS1 games (also abomination that is PS now and a few digital ps2 games) switch has virtual console but as far as I know, that doesn't include GameCube, wii or wiiu. Companies today would much rather want to see their game twice with a resolution bump
The Game Boy Advance library is sooo good, holy shit.
Many memorable games and many underrated games until today.
Takeshi List some examples.
The GBA's classics is why it's the rated 1 emulator ever
Robaho I just gave you your 100th like BTW have a great day :)
Arno Wisp pokemon fire red/leaf green, pokemon ruby/sapphire/emerald, mother 3, golden Sun, etc

OMG NO! YOU PUT IN THE CARTRIDGE THE WRONG WAY!
Plot twist:they’re like double sided floppies, one has 5 movie trailers and the other has the actual video
>Video about my favorite console of all time
>Mega Man Zero music plays through almost the entire video
True bliss.
SchAlternate Megaman Zero and Battle Network are the best GBA games
EMCT82 Bëast Don't forget Mother 3 and, in my opinion, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror.
>Ware wa meshia nari! Hahahaha!
Waddle Dee Why are you EVERYWHERE!
Mega Man Zero is one of the most underrated games ever made. It has smooth animation, a decent story, responsive controls, etc. I can't believe how unpopular it is.
My most nostalgic handheld. ☺️
Joshua Sundberg Ditto.
Joshua Sundberg The GBA SP will always be the best Christmas gift I've ever received
Got mines in Christmas 2004, a year after the handheld launched. It was probably the only best Christmas I had compared to other years later!

It still baffles me to this day why we can get GBA VC on the Wii U, but not the 3DS
Landon Hood from what I understand, if you purchased the 3DS before the price drop Nintendo released some games from the GBA exclusively for these systems on the eshop. I believe the program was called, "The Nintendo Ambassador Program." Definitely a cool little thing. It's still infuriating though that there haven't been any released for those bought afterwards.
Landon Hood when tf is switch getting vc????
Yup, I replayed Metroid Fusion on my 3DS ;)
Landon Hood the 3DS is not powerful enough to emulate GBA.
and VC games have to have the VC overlay, therefore have to be emulated.
the embassador games are not emulated, they run in DS mode and the DS hardware can run GBA games.
in DS mode it can't have the VC overlay, therefore Nintendo doesn't release GBA VC games
Kevboard Arts "Not powerful enough to emulate GBA" Riiiight! The 3DS a current gen handheld is not powerful enough to emulate a handheld from over 10 years ago!
No mention of the Game Boy Advance player for Gamecube?
I know what was up with that. They mentioned the other ways to play GB games on other consoles
It's even being used at 8:10 to play the "Mario Kart XXL" demo!
Did you know that the Gameboy Advance is *the* shit?
I love this handheld a lot, very nostalgic for me.
the advance was my first console

So it took 10 years to make a handheld as good as the gamecube. ( There might be two of this comment, but that's just because I'm having a lot of problems with my computer.)
Even the “new” 3ds model is not as powerful as the GameCube it’s somewhere between N64 and GameCube
I love how Nintendo used to always hold up their new console to the crowd at E3
You forgot the fact that although the GBA didn't have a sleep mode at the beggining, it was later implemented in games such as the later Fire Emblem games and Mother 3.
Jesus Guerra And Superstar saga
Zelda Minish Cap also had a sleep mode.
And Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3. It also doesn't have rumble feature until they made some games that had them both only exclusive to Game Boy Player.
Golden Sun had a sleep mode as well.
No mention of the Game Boy Player on GameCube?!? FOR SHAME!
Probably because everyone knows about it.
+TheZeroSbr There is lots of information in this video that is common knowledge, it's an overview of the system, hence why it seems like an odd exclusion. Some E-Reader stuff would have been cool too.
No, stuff like Nintendo planning for the GBA SP to have 3D isn't common knowledge. The GB Player was a well-known add-on. You don't make a channel called "DidYouKnowGaming?" and tell everyone about stuff they already know.
They didn't say EVERYTHING in the video was common knowledge, so...
There could of been some development information about the Game boy Player that we don't know about.
I need me a gluco boy

*what could go wrong?*
The F-Zero GBA games used that double Mode-7 layer thing from Mario Kart XXL and it looks amazing!
Can we get a DYKG on Puyo Puyo? I'll let you use my footage! I'll even edit it!
...That being said, great video! The GBA was one of my favorite handhelds, even though I didn't play it as much as my consoles due to health-related reasons. Seeing this was informative and nostalgic in a way, to boot!
I second this.
Levyanimeman I have similar feelings the GBA SP was my first real handheld. And all things considered I played the handheld more than my GCN. I had health stuff which overall led to me preferring handheld gaming.
The very first sentence. Did you know in 2009? Wait? what? Dont you mean 1999. I got seriously confused haha.
duracellplus06 I’m confused too lol
me too
No, he means 2009. The prototype had been announced in the 90s, but nobody saw it until 2009
@@SonofSethoitae no he must mean 1999, if it was the follow up to the original Gameboy but the precursor to the GBA which officially released in 2001. Also he said it has almost been a decade since the original Gameboy launched in 1989.
@@BlankLAD You're not listening; the actual prototype wasn't shown off until 2009. See here: nintendoeverything.com/a-look-into-nintendos-unreleased-game-boy-successor/
I had instant nostalgia. Thank you for making this video.
This was an amazing system despite having a bad soundchip (or lack there of), some of my favorite games on it were, Battle Network 5 and 6, Zero 3, Kirby and The Amazing Mirror, Drill Dozer and Pokémon Emerald.
Sonic Battle and Zelda Minish Cap also had amazing tracks.
Aminux Ultimum also golden Sun 1 and 2

Ahh, the memories, I remember the first time I played Pokemon Emerald on the GBA.
3rd Gen, best Gen.
maxter328 not really the 3rd gen was considered by many a terrible generation and its only been 16 years not that long ago.
charger master on the pokémon subreddit (r/pokemon which has around 750,000 users) it was the generation with the highest average rating, with pokémon Emerald being by far the most played one in the series.

Probably my favourite gaming platform. Seeing all the clips of GBA games during the video made me really happy. Even games like Mega Man Battle Network and Advance Wars that tend to be overlooked nowadays were visible. Video was nice and informative too of course, but man I just can't stop thinking about all the awesome games on it. Good thing the GBA library on the Wii U virtual console is so vast.
With that ding at the beginning of the video, you captured the heart of many a gammer. Amazing video on the best Handheld ever.
Im working on programming Ocarina of Time for the Gameboy Advance! I uploaded a video. I just have a 3D scene so far but I will add more. I really love the GBA. Such a great system and games.
Do you have a recorded video of it or something? I'd love to check out your project. Seems cool
Yes on my channel. I have 2 videos uploaded showing my progress.
loving the megaman zero clips and background music , sibce nobody actually know about these games
hookiro yeah, those are GBA hidden gems
hookiro Wtf do you mean nobody knows about them?? do you CZcams?.... ever? so many let's plays it's pathetic.
Great video! I loved to see the clips from Golden Sun being in it.
And damn, someone from my country designed the GBA? THAT is a great reason to make me proud about France.
I have to give props. That is the first time your transition suggesting we check out other DYKG videos has actually merged well with the content itself.
Man, I wish hardware developers still cared as much about backwards compatibility now as they did then.
innegativeion They do, he's called Phill Spencer.
(gba sp) is my favorite hand held console of all time, and my 3rd all time favorite platform of choice
I had just a few games for GBA, but I'm glad to see clips of them in this video. I had Megaman Zero, Golden Sun, Wario Land 4, Superstar Saga and a few others.
Oh man so many childhood memories with this wonderful device
Mario has a castle in the gameboy series Mario Land, possible Mario Land sequel?
That's Mario and Luigi super star saga note:I CANT WAIT FOR SUPERSTAR SAGA BOWSES MINIONS FOR 3ds

Learning about the Visteon Gameboy Advance DVD player has given me a new desire I cannot afford.

I got so pumped about the idea of an updated Zelda 2 but it's not playable :(
Apparently the SNES Satellaview had remakes of both Zelda 1 and 2, and apparently you can now emulate both remakes.
i love that sound of the gameboy advance when you open it.. ploouaaaaa... clingggg!
Oh fuck is this Dazz from TSR?

Theres also an unofficial gameboy adaptor for the N64, I had one, it was rubbish and instead of playing the Gameboys own sounds it had its own soundtrack that broke your eyes if played for a certain amount of time
OMG, that tune at the beginning, so nostalgic.
The Gameboy advance was a huge part of my childhood! Me and my friends were always versing each other in Megaman Battle Network series and the Megaman Zero series also Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.
I love the gba library^^ So many great snes ich games :)
What if I told you that the Game Boy Advance was the best Nintendo console?
Mr. Carzo Handheld*
I'd be shocked because the game boy isn't even a console
You would be wrong
Wii is best, IMO.
BTW, a handheld is technically a console. It's just that it has its own built-in screen, instead of relying on a TV/Monitor.
Seeing and hearing Mega Man Zero footage and music featured throughout this video warms my heart.
What an awesome Video with a giant Bunch of Informations. Great.

one of the best videos I've seen of the gba
This is, so far, the episode of DYKG that had the most stuff that I've never have heard about before
Back when Nintendo cared about backwards compatibility.
Um ...they still do dude.
I think they are talking about the switch
You try strapping a disk drive to the Switch and tell me how long the battery life stays up. Seriously, I can't fathom why people thought the Switch was going to be even remotely backwards compatible. And even *if* you managed to sidestep that issue, games like Splatoon require the use of both the gamepad and the TV screen. So even if you could use the Wii U disks, it would do jack all for anybody.
Much more plausibly, I could see someone wanting a 3DS cartridge slot in it, but with as huge an install base as the 3DS already has, I can't see too many people having a Switch without the 3DS. Just doesn't seem like a priority. I'd rather the Switch have its relatively low cost kept that way rather than slam even more hardware inside it and jack up the price even more.
Also keep in mind that the Switch is a new hardware of its kind. So how is this hardware suppose to be backwards comparable with both Wii U and 3DS physical media? Those system require dual screen and the touchscreen is different from the Switch.
You guys are acting like Nintendo is abandoning backwards comparable altogether when the company is thinking about the future. I will guarantee that the Switch will have a successor that will have Switch games comparable due to its small cartridge.
I loved the shrek movie on the gameboy advance the most

one burned my house down and killed my parents plz send help
Well the screams start coming and they don't stop coming
Man the GBA SP holds a special place in my heart along with Pokémon RS and MMBN3 BW. It brought me and my brother a lot of joy even though things at home were falling apart, domestic violence, my father was gone for months at some other state for work, my mother working at a sweatshop to provide. Luckily it all worked out but man did this console bring joy to me and my twin brother in some of the darkest time in our lives.
Great vid, always learn something new.

Best emulator
Nydeh PSP can emulate the GBA tho
All modern devices and even Pentium 4 era computers can easily emulate a GBA including the 3DS.
DarkZerol But 3ds needs a expecific sd card
Victor Abysswalker My 3DS emulates gameboy, gameboy color, and gamebou advance games and it is a standard 3DS with nothing extra added.
Aaron Barringer How?
The opening music of the gameboy makes me smile

It's nice to see that Nintendo was willing to put in the effort to ensure backwards compatibility, a feature rarely seen in newer consoles
man, the sprites in GBA games still look pretty good, so well animated, what an amazing handheld it was.
