I grow California white garlic in zone 9a in Texas . I just throw it in the fridge for 4-6 weeks and plant them in November and harvest in beginning /middle of June.
I grow Russian Red, plant at the end of September harvest end August, I’m trying elephant this year. I’m in Lethbridge Alberta 4A. I have no full sun in my garden, my garage takes care of that.
Hollis, great teaching, as usual. Nancy, your filming and editing and the scripture messages you attach lift my soul! Thank you both for always reminding us from whence comes all good in our lives.
Well done Hollis if anybody can grow garlic in Florida it's you you got the golden thumb.
LOL😂. I’m not there yet but I am working on it.
Mr Hollis try planting some in a good shade. Southern old timers in the south planted theirs in a shade under a tree.
What I like about this channel is that you teach the entire process from seed planting to harvest and storage. Everything is important, and I appreciate that you share the results of the effort, and qualify it. I live in zone 8a. I was so overly excited by the idea of planting garlic watching CZcams, that I planted my kitchen garlic in Decenber and February because I didn't know better, and some of it is doing okay, we'll see in the fall. Your videos now provide me with the FULL context and important information, so that I believe I will be more successful in years to come.
It’s impressive the way you do these videos over many moths! I think it would help for you to mention along the way what the date is each time. Thanks for all the amazingly hard work you go through to make these helpful videos.
Awww, their so cute...them baby garlic bulbs...lol
Every year I say I’m going to plant garlic. I’m going to do it this fall. Thank you for the inspiration and all the great information you provide.
I love your channel and learn a lot from you and your wife. 😊I follow several ppl on you tube that live in Florida and they all say to put the garlic in the fridge for 3 mo. I’ve done that and my garlic is growing🥰🙏 thank God. I only planted about 50 bulbs but I have a little garden😂❤
You can probably grow anything you put your mind to!!! Love you and Nancy and BingBing…
That's about the SWEETEST little ending with your little sweet dog saying" hi"- So sweet!!
❤️🐶❤️
Try planting your soft neck garlic where it gets afternoon shade and/or mulch it with pine straw or wheat straw to hold in moisture. And feed it several times in its growing season, just like bulbing onions. That’s what has worked for family and friends in FL.
My thoughts exactly!
Gratitude is the attitude! I'm always thankful, and it's great to know that you guys are too!
Amen
It's beautiful and I can smell its fragrance all the way in Ohio! HA Oh, how I love Nancy's "have a blessed day!" response. She's a real keeper. Love you, Nancy. xoxoxo and baby Bing-Bing, too.
Love your garden shows. I am Jell - us.
Love that you show how you gave something a go. My wife and I love you all. That includes Bing Bing!
In the UK we have Wild Garlic which grows in forests, it likes shade. You can use the leaves for a soft garlic taste, great for garlic butter. Not sure if this is something you could try in your wooded areas?
Brilliant video btw, yours is the best veg gardening channel 😊
I love you and Nancy! I use alot of your videos in my garden. Thanks for all the work you put into the videos for us to enjoy
Thanks for sharing!!! Blessings!!! Everything is a lesson!!!
I'm leaving 10 A in San Francisco and will be in 4 A soon in Upstate NY... I'm so excited!!
Thanks for sharing 🙏 😎 🏖 🏝
My pleasure!!
Before you give up on garlic, try a variety called Texas Rose. It's suppose to be tolerant of hot spring weather. I put it in the frig for 4 to 6 weeks and plant mid Nov. I plant it in an area that in the spring they get late afternoon shade.
LOVE how organized you are in growing, processing and storing your food! ❤ we LOVE you guys 🇨🇦 Linda in Vancouver
We are so enjoying your videos. ❤️
So cool guys 😃 Nora and I are looking to grow garlic this fall 🙏
I pulled several dozen garlic bulbs from my mid Georgia garden today. Most were 2 inches across. I planted it in early November but I planted it very shallow...just pushed it into the soil with the pointed tip barely under soil. Then I put about an inch of shredded pine over it, water it once a week throughout the winter.
👍
Thanks for that! I saw that Travis on the Lazy Dog Channel tried some soft neck garlic in South Georgia this year. He followed that technique of putting the bulbs in fridge for some weeks prior to planting so the garlic would have its chill requirement met, he had really good results! I wish you would give it one more try!
God bless
Klaus
We are planning to do exactly that this fall👍
Thanks for sharing.
This makes me feel so much better. I am in 9b in So Cal. I planted it in October and harvested it a few weeks ago. The look similar to yours
Thanks for sharing
I've have not attempted to grow garlic yet but I might now after watching your video. I live in zone 4 and yes we can grow beautiful garlic here
If anything, you got experience out of it. Atleast you tried. God bless ya'll and keep up the great videos.
I tried garlic this last year and if it hadn’t smelled like garlic I would’ve thought I planted green onions! I pulled them last week, glad I’m not the only one with garlic woes! Great video!!
Great experiment!
God blesses you all so much! It's a joy to me to see His generosity and how you appreciate what He does for you. God bless in Jesus' name.
Well shucks. I'm trying to grow garlic for the first time this year. I'm in south Florida (zone 10A), so I won't hold my breath for anything this year. I will try the cold stratification that everyone is suggesting next time.
I grew Soft Neck Garlic in Sydney Australia, but I brought some garlic at greengrocer cheap as they where shooting out, so I thought to try, they where Hard Neck Garlic that grew great last year, my first try so now I’ll grow either or both.
I tried the Texas Rose variety this year in Southwest Louisiana. If it doesn’t produce so great I’m going elephant garlic from now on. Picking mine soon.
I put my soft neck garlic into the fridge for 3 months then planted them in October. I also mulched them. They grow nicely and I did get nice bulbs.
I've read all the comments and find it interesting that so many people are offering
YOU tips on how to be successful. It truly is a "2 way street" as it should be.
It was you that gave us the courage to grow garlic. It worked, at least with the hard
necks. We are in Maine. Our stratify season is 4-5 months long, and not just cold
soil, but frozen soil. Yet when the ground does thaw completely it's only days to
sprouts emerging, middle of April, and ready to harvest first of July. So, 90 days or
less from germination to done. Our nemeses is Winter, your nemeses is Summer.
Trying to get different "cold weather" crops up and done before it gets too hot.
So the question is, how long is your forced stratification period? We've all had a
garlic bulb sprout in the crisper drawer. How long was it there? And what variety?
I'd be tempted to put a couple garlic bulbs in the fridge and see how long it takes
them to sprout, come out of normal dormancy. You do have an advantage, since
maturity being about 90 days (allegedly) stratify, plant late Feb, early March, and
harvest when plant shows signs, end of May to mid June.
The only problem with experimenting in growing garlic is the cost of the seed.
Certified Garlic bulbs can be as much as $20 per pound, 8-10 bulbs.
In any case, you're the reason our Garlic crop this year is free. All harvested last
July, dried, and replanted last November. Thank you for that.
TYFS
Yes sir. We all learn from each other. This year I will be placing my bulbs in the refrigerator for two months for cold stratification. We simply don’t have enough chill hours in Florida. I will also postpone planting until December 1st. I am experimenting with 6 different varieties now that are supposed to be more heat tolerant. I will harvest them shortly and determine what varieties work best for me down here. After that, I will commit to a full raised bed this fall. Hoping for a much better yield in 2023👍
@@HollisNancysHomestead Adapt
and overcome. Should be every gardeners
mantra. I hope you're videoing this experiment. Would be great to see the
results, and why it worked or not. Whether
it concerns us or not. Here in Maine.
Oh, in regards to soaking the cloves or not,
the guy we learned from (you) said soak
them. We've had 100% germination 3-4 years in a row. Guess I'd say, "If it aint
broke, don't fix it." 😊
👍
Yes, building a video on it now. Scheduled for release in September of this year
Planted garlic last year for the 1st time. I'm here in the high desert, sw Idaho. Each has a few greens turning brown but still many greens left. I was told to pull when there are only 4 green tops left. Only planted about 35.
Thanks, julie
I’m going to try this year in Oct/Nov using the refrigerator trick to vernalize them before planting out. I’m in zone 9b on the space coast in Melbourne Fl
I live in North Texas and it's blistering hot here for about four or five months of the year. Gardening is very difficult during the summer. Last year was my first year trying to grow a garden, but if there is one thing that I have learned is to find varieties that grow well in your area for your specific climate. I researched onions and garlic that grow well in North Texas (zone 8B) and feel that the varieties that are recommended by our local Ag extension will do well for me. You might check out specific varieties as well.
Hi guys, I love your videos. Regarding the garlic experiment, “ nothing beats a try”. Now you know. Stay safe, god bless.
Just need an air conditioned green house lol kidding thank you for a great video. We learn more when things don't go so well. Thank you for testing it in Florida
Thank you .😘
Wow I live in 9A in Arizona and never thought we would have a problem with reg garlic. will be following your elephant garlic video this fall.
czcams.com/video/50QyjgztdtI/video.html
Mine turned out the exact same way. I’m 9a Florida panhandle. I’ll try the elephant garlic this fall. Thank you for your hard work.
czcams.com/video/50QyjgztdtI/video.html
I live in Micanopy, glad to know that it's not me and I did something wrong trying to grow garlic. Mine looked just like yours. I really enjoy your videos and have learned so much from you guys. Thanks
Thanks for sharing
I like garlic 🧄 & onions 🧅 I will try to grow some in GA. 👍🏽😊
If that's all the garlic i could get my hands on, it would be worth trying!
Wow
Nice job:
Sorry to hear about your garlic, but we never know unless we try. I love your channel. Mrs. Nancy, and your channel is the best on YT bar none. Watching, & learning from Kentucky. ✝️🙏🕊️
Thanks so much
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I can see they haven’t formed much of a bulb, perhaps the depth may of been an issue, but weather does seem to be the bigger issue.
mulch will keep the soil cooler and moist. As hot as it gets there, I would mulch for that reason.
I'm 9a in southern Louisiana. I sowed soft neck cloves on Thanks Giving (Nov. 25th) and harvested April 12th with a pleasant result. About 25% started to 'witch-broom' but were still good, about 25% were spectacular large bulbs, and about 50% were smaller bulbs than usual but still great. I'm going to do the same thing again at the end of the year. Just saying it seams where you are in '9a' means you may still be able to grow garlic.
I haven’t given up❤️
Hi Hollis & Nancy .... would putting a 20 or 25% Shade Cloth canopy stretched over small PVC pipe arch over the bed work there in Fla to cut down on the heat ....IDK it might be worth a try in an experimental plot ....Love the videos & God Bless ya'll
My garlic has been growing for months and it still looks like a blade if grass. 😆 we live in Central FL
I have successfully grown softneck and have a 50% success rate on hardneck garlic. I'm in Tucson, AZ. If you put your cloves in the fridge for a month before planting, you'll get bulbs. I'm sure Florida is no different.
Well nice try Mr Hollis now I know you can’t grow garlic in Florida I live farther south of you I’m not even going try appreciate the video and you 😊
I bought garlic from the grocery store planted it git tons of garlic in live in zone 9
Good roots
Could Nancy please share her recipes? I would love to try them.❤
czcams.com/play/PLjAejPnq636ZEO-fNO8qqqtbT4SJ_ztWY.html&si=r3LXjVxrcsl9f5x8
I have some type of garlic growing on my farm that my grandmother planted many years ago, maybe 30-40 years. It just grows and spreads in clumps every year. But she planted it beneath large oak and walnut trees. I'm in zone 7b.
Awesome
i can't wait to try this. i tried garlic once before and they never fully bulbed. i also live in Florida. i do used straw as mulch or i find the sun bakes my soil and it gets hard and crusty. how do you keep that from happening? been watching y'all since y'all were gardening in your suburban home. i love your property. very nice piece of land. i live in a neighborhood but hope to have me a homestead soon..
Can you guys do a pest control/prevention to devastating pest? Especially in Florida, where the whitefly is an assassin and and hornworms are a regular… thank you and love you guys!
I’m in 9b of coastal bend Texas and my soft neck garlic did the same.
Try putting the garlic in the freezer for a few weeks before planting in November/December.... you may find you get a much better bulb!
Yes ma’am. Cold stratification is the missing link here. This year we plan to place the bulbs in the refrigerator for 2 months prior to planting👍
Good morning...love you videos first off. But I live in central florida and I grew soft neck year before last. One tip I've found is you can't plant until Dec. I wait until end of December and I get a nice harvest of garlic here in central Florida.
Thank you! We are giving it another try this fall. I will hold off until December
Check out Noble Roots Farm. Shouldn't be far from you. They sell Salmon River Racambole garlic. Mine looked similar to yours, but Noble Roots seems to get heads on theirs. I'm in 9b.
Hi dear ones,
I have a question. Where do you order your elephant garlic to grow.. from?
We lived on the blue ridge mountain above the Shenandoah river before you cross the bridge into Clark county! We moved near Oviedo in 1995 so I was happy to see a former VIRGINIAN on here growing things I can learn from 😄👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Holly why don't you write a recipe book. love your show and food recipes. thank you 😊
Elephant garlic? You grew it. Gotta check that out. I love elephant garlic!
Here ya go:
czcams.com/video/50QyjgztdtI/video.html
Hollis, you could grow chicken if you planted eggs😉 there is nothing you will not grow!
This is way better than no garlic!
Just harvest when they green I'm going to try that myself I live in the West Indies Cayman Islands just all mention it to you
Check out lazy dog farm. Storage in fridge is key to creating cloves.
I agree garlic can be very tricky depending on where you live I live In Oklahoma so I grow the hard nick variety I have even grown the soft nick as well
❤️
I refrigerated mine in zone 8b...garlic came from sams lol. I have no idea what type. But I got garlic coming out my ears. 20 fold or more!
You should grow for green garlic the new trend just passing it on make garlic butter with it will try to grow later this year I let you know iam growing in Cayman islands zone super hot and humid
That was one heck of an effort! Good for you! Everyone learned something! I sure did! I guess the garlic might do well with a boost in any zone? I'm in NJ, any harm or benefit in soaking garlic here? I love liquid seaweed. I use it to fertilize my veggie plants as they grow. Great lessons! Thank you! 🧄🧄🧄
The method I demonstrated will work well for you. We had great success doing it that way when we lived in Virginia. I am struggling with the heat, humidity and low chill hours down here in Florida. I am currently experimenting with 6 different varieties of garlic that are supposed to be more heat tolerant. When I find a variety that works better for me then I will commit to a full bed this fall. I think I am getting closer. 👍
@@HollisNancysHomestead Thank you! And best of luck! I admire your tenacity; I don't give up very easily either!
@@HollisNancysHomestead maybe field test all 6 for you, and us, to compare. And perhaps break it into 2 each, refrigerated for 4-6 weeks and not refrigerated.
I am at Zone 6- I plant Hardneck garlic from Keene Garlic- the 1st year was great- 2nd year planting them at the same lot ( no more other space that I can rotate)- I amended the soil - My 2nd harvest was not bigger than 1st year- assuming because of planting the same lot? I might not feed them as often as the 1st year. My question: DO I need to rotate planting the garlic?
I'm not far from yall, right down 19 about 45 mins, I've never had any luck with garlic down here in central fl.
Cloves buried to deep IMO for soft neck garlic, and you didn't mention refrigerating the bulbs to winterize them.
Also, massive root systems have me thinking water was an issue. How often were they watered thoroughly?
What about in zone 9b at the top of Lake Okeechobee?
Also what kind of garlic is the grocery store selling? Soft or hard?
we plant in early October and don't harvest till late June i'm in Oklahoma
I grow hardneck garlic in zone 9b
Green garlic, or immature garlic, is a delicacy. Use it instead of leeks in leek and potato soup.
Hi Hollis and Nancy. I'm a little confused as to how softneck garlic reproduces if it doesn't scape. How is it's life cycle different from hardneck?
Bone meal is like sending an invention out to my 🐕 to come on over and dig me up. I lost three tomatoes plants out of ten to my dogs. I had to buy 🐕 Mace as a deterrent.
Yep ... blood meal will do the same , K9s love it
I live in zone 9b Central Florida. I was wondering if you could do a video on elephant garlic. Do you use it like regular garlic?? Love your videos. Thanks.
czcams.com/video/50QyjgztdtI/video.html
You should grow them in more shady spot. They gave up because its so hot.
Best spot plant it 3-5? rows into the north side of the corn patch. It might be cooler in the shade from your native trees. You almost have it. They were only 40 more good days away.
Thank you sir. Will try it again. 👍
I think you gave up too soon. Usually want half the plant brown. I wait 9 months to harvest. I love green garlic, but if you want bulbs I’d wait till June or early July to harvest.
Do you rotate your garlic and onions or fo you amend your soil each year and replant them in the same spot?
In northern VA (zone 7a) presoak is not necessary.
What about in a green house in zone 9 and 10?
Garlic needs cold stratification in frig for couple months before planting if your zone doesnt have cold winters. Then plant
You are so right. We are going to do exactly that this year
Forgot to say I'm in southwest Florida.
What type of tarp cover do u use for your drying rack? I'm in Texas 9A/b and as soon as I can walk from surgery I will plant soft next and see what happens.
