Cool as Ice is a 1991 American romantic musical comedy film directed by David Kellogg, written by David Stenn and starring rapper Vanilla Ice in his feature film debut. The plot focuses on Johnny Van Owen, a freewheeling, motorcycle-riding rapper who arrives in a small town and meets Kathy, an honor student who catches his eye. Meanwhile, Kathy's father, who is in witness protection, is found by the corrupt police officers he escaped from years ago.
Developed as a vehicle for Vanilla Ice, the film was widely panned by critics, and was a box office bomb, grossing only $1.2 million from a $6 million budget.

First off, Jason...COOL AS ICE is always a win, lol! ....Second...In Ice's defense...people forget that Vanilla Ice was the White version/counterpart to the Fresh Prince(Will Smith) as in.... Vanilla Ice never cussed or swear in his music( it was kid friendly and made for the rollerskating parties)...this is also why they picked him for TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze for the music(Ninja Rap). Vanilla Ice was run out of the Rap business when Suge Knight hung him by his feet over the balcony of his Mansion and shook him down for money....and the rest is Carpenter history.

The dad is Michael Gross - Family Ties dad. YES BURT GUMMER FROM TREMORS!

This movie plays quite often on the Rifftrax Twitch channel and I’ve seen the theory floated often (and I think I agree, until we hear differently from knowledgeable sources) that Michael Gross signed on to do a completely different movie than the one that was completed. The theory goes that he signed on to do a fairly generic but gritty-ish thriller about a cop who has to go on the run and assume a different name for him and his family. And, at some point, some executive said, “Hey, my niece likes that Vanilla Ice guy - put him in the picture”. So, they smashed together a Serpico script and this…weird Pee-Wee’s Playhouse/wrong-side-of-tracks “teen” (ugh) light comedy. The tonal shifts are like a slap in the face. And the acting styles are all over the place.
    Thoughts?

Universal knew they had a stinker on their hands. Filming began in April of 1991 just after "Ice Ice Baby" was a hit. They asked every popular actress to co-star with Rob and everyone turned it down. Gwyneth Paltrow almost accepted the role but her father had reservations and she ultimately turned it down. The actress who accepted would go on to act on "E.R." a few years later and stayed with the show for almost a decade.
The movie was a low budget production but the movie still flopped with the minimal investment. It was reported that Rob's salary was one-sixth the budget. Universal must have sent copies of the film to the video duplicators at the same time the theaters got the film. The movie was released in October of 1991 and the film debuted on video about a month later... one of the shortest windows between a wide theatrical release and home video.
