It isn't shown in the films but Harry is gifted in Defense Against The Dark Arts class. He excels above his class and likely most students in the years above him in it. It's the only class he surpasses Hermione in, which even she acknowledges. The Patronus charm is highly advanced magic that even some adults struggle with so Harry mastering a full Patronus at only 13 was quite an achievement. Hermione knew they needed a teacher to show them how to do practical defense and Harry who not only excelled in it but who had actually had real experience using it would do the best at instructing them, as usual she was right. I don't think that you realized or grasped that in the battle at the Ministry of Magic that these students, children really, were going up against fully trained adult dark wizards and they actually managed to hold them off until help arrived largely thanks to Harry's training of them.

This movie was shot in 2006, making him 17 when it was filmed. So he is very close to the age of the character. If you remember, in The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry produced a full Patronus Charm. Which was the silver stag that saved him and Sirius from the dementors. None of the other students have ever achieved a full blown patronus charm, even Hermoine. Although magic spells haven't always been the main focus, magic is still featured in alot of ways, and as students they learn slowly because it's actually very hard to master spells. Which is what school is for. It takes years. Harry, has mastered more spells, more fully, than most other students. It may not show them as a main aspect in previous films but he is actually good with producing spells for his age. And that's why he is leading the group and teaching.

Of course movies will always be better because they are more descriptive and accurate. Book language and movie language are completely different things.

Harry got so much crap from the fandom for his behavior in Order of the Phoenix and I’ll never understand why. He’s a 15-year-old who has been drowning in trauma since he was 15 months old. His parents were brutally murdered in front of him, he is emotionally, mentally, and physically abused by his relatives, he goes to a magic school where bad things happen to him every single year and none of the teachhers seem overly concerned with preventing it or hanbdling it properly, he is abused by teachers at the school
I could go on. And yet, everyone expects him to be Superman. He’s supposed to be cool as a cucumber when Dumbledore ignores the hell out of him for an entire year. He’s supposed to be able to defeat grown wizards more than double his age who are experts in dark magic. Has anyone been around 15 year olds? When I was 15 I could barely function with just having to go to school. If I would have had to save the world from an evil wizard, ya’ll would have definitely been toast, haha. The criticisms are mostly stating that he talks over the movie, misses vital plot points, and then blames the movie for his lack of attention. Which is valid considering he missed the part where Harry is being punished by a teacher that made him use a magic quill to carve words into his flesh
all while saying everything nowadays is child abuse. As a viewer, it can be frustrating. Stating said frustrations is not hate. Suggesting he pauses the movie to go on tangents is not hate. Being confused on how he still doesn’t understand that a school year is a year is not hate. Fans kindly explaining the lore he didn’t understand is not hate. I honestly don’t understand the mental gymnastics it takes to twist these things into personal attacks against him.

@@BillyBinges That’s completely understandable for why you bring up the hate comments so often and I’m truly sorry that you have to deal with that. It sounds absolutely exhausting and infuriating for you. No one should be attacking you, a living breathing human being with feelings, all over a fictional series. I love the books and grew up over them, they got me through my childhood abuse, but I would never judge someone if they aren’t into it too.
And yes way, I did actually read 435 comments. I was confused, since I hadn’t seen anything blatantly hateful towards you, then curious to see how far the rabbit hole went, so I kept scrolling. In the movie, Bellatrix Lestrange, aka miss hot mess, killed Sirius using the killing curse. Once he was hit, there was nothing anyone could have done to save him.
Also, Harry’s skills as a wizard are greater than his peers. Even Hermione, who’s very knowledgeable, doesn’t have the natural skill Harry has. It’s mentioned in this movie and in the third movie that some full grown wizards can’t produce the patronus charm and Harry’s is very powerful.
And remember, magic isn’t some snap your finger, cure all. It’s a skill, a subject, something that has to be learned and honed.

I wouldn’t go that far do I think Harry has a higher skill than a majority or a lot of his peers definitely all of him absolutely not though compared to Hermione absolutely not do I think he’s better at fighting and perhaps defensive spells overall I would say a slight edge even though I think Hermione would be able to hold her own on the defensive side of a duel. But when it comes to all the other magic lessons and practices that they could both deal she’s just far more knowledgeable in application and in spell work she would crush him in potions and antidote in obviously history herbology again an application care of magical creatures same thing because of knowledge charms she’s proven that again throughout the box to be far more knowledgeable only thing Harry excels at over her possibly would be the actual physical fighting but again I would believe her defensive knowledge would help her in a fight even if she couldn’t physically overpower him with magic in a pure fight for fight but she knows far more spells than Harry does plus remember the books are narrated through the perspective of Harry but even through the book series and stuff without Hermione they wouldn’t of made it past the first year honestly if there was anybody that was essential to the series it’s her Ron could’ve been the most easily knocked out and I honestly think it was just there more for the family aspect and to have it not be awkward with it just being two friends having it be a trio makes it just more naturally comfortable to read and experience but when it came to the actual journey he was the least useful overall yes Harry needed to fight Voldemort in order to technically win but if I had to go on a similar journey to just survive and make it through a time. And I can only choose one of the three it would without a doubt be Hermione

interesting fact: half an hour before the shooting of the scene of Sirius Black's death, Gary Oldman (Sirius) went with Daniel Radcliff (Harry) to a separate room to help Daniel in despair. So, for half an hour, Gary held Daniel with all his might, and Daniel felt so helpless, powerless, and desperate. Therefore, just like in the scene of Sirius' death, actor Remus Lupine caught Daniel, as did Gary, Daniel began to feel completely desperate, powerless and helpless, so he started screaming so desperately sincerely that Emma Watson (Hermione) and Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix) they cried immediately, so they muffled Daniel's screams.
In addition, Daniel's grandfather died in the week the scene was filmed.

Hermione has a lot of knowledge and she is amazing at enchantments, but she doesn't have actual fighting experience, and since harry had to be a part of the try wizard tournament in the previous movie he had to practice on his own different types of spells to try to be on the same level as the other participants (this is shown in the books). Also hermione has been shown to crumble under pressure although she is good in classes, but harry doesn't crumble under preassure and he has actual fighting skills and natural instincts when it comes to defense against the dark arts and offensive spells.
Plus in the fourth book in the gravior scene harry actually fought several deatheaters by himself and even stunt one of them before dueling voldemort so yeah he might not be in the same level as other adult wizards but he is whey above the level of the 14 yo wizards it's just that the directors of the movies decided to make him look a lot more helpless and make hermione this mighty powerful witch that she isn't in the books at least at this point in time in the story.

Your frustration with Harry in the scene where Sirius died is understandable. They changed the pacing on that scene in the movie. In the book it happened so fast that while he was talking and laughing with Harry he was hit with the killing curse, died, and his body fell backward into the mirror with a smile still on his face. It happened so fast Harry couldn't react.
As for the students not using magic, that's mainly in the movies. In the books there are several disagreements among students that results in students getting hit with all kinds of spells and ending up vomiting slugs, warts and boils all over them, swollen faces, giant buck teeth, paralysis, and more that caused them to be sent to the nurse to return them to normal. Hermione was actually hit with the giant buck teeth spell in goblet of fire I think. She took that moment to have her teeth straightened and made a bit smaller how she wanted them when the nurse was adjusting them back to normal since she had to tell the nurse what her normal teeth looked like. It wasn't a huge change so even the people that could tell that something was different couldn't figure it out.

I tried to give it a try, multiple times, and honestly it's not just with HP... I don't want to sound rude or unfair, but he just doesn't seem to care enough to even try to connect or retain any piece of information. Most jokes don't make sense and are mostly distracting (not only to us, clearly), 5 movies in and he still hasn't grasped the concept of magic and that this is just like a normal school, every movie is a different year...honestly it's just painful to watch him go through multiple series without understanding one single concept, he seems to dodge simple information like bullets on the matrix...Also kind of disrespectful of him to make a livestream literally making fun of comments that weren't even hate, and mostly extremely polite, giving him tips on why his LITERAL audience/ subscribers weren't enjoying his content and just wanted to be more respected in the way he tackled certain aspects of his movie reactions...I don't get the drama honestly, this all just feels extremely childish at this point. Telling people to find a therapist or a hobby because of those comments calling his behaviour out...? wow what is this?

Some people in the HP Fandom, who have grown up along with Harry, reading all the books prior to seeing the movie adaptions (and who have now rewatched and reread the books many times at this point) do not realize that first time watchers of the movies who haven't read the books may misunderstand certain things that happen in the movies. Or miss certain things. Due to the fact that much of the backstory and certain details from the books (they may seem small, but are important to the storyline) are cut in the films due to time constraints. I say this as someone who began reading the books at age...8? And saw the first movie at age 11 at the premiere. I am 31 years old now and have reread the books and rewatched the movies MANY times. I am a huge fan of the series. You're doing JUST FINE Billy! Please ignore the toxic people within the Fandom. Some people take a fictional series way too seriously.

I will absolutely agree that they don't show as much magic in the movies as books. Honestly, overall, I am a massive fan of the HP books, but I thought the movies were fine...no more or less than that. A couple cool things book Harry does which don't really come up in the movies (just going through the movies seen so far):
    1. Harry starts to essentially master the disarming charm (expelliarmus) by the end of his second year, despite only having witnessed it and then practicing it with friends from there (so no formal instruction).
    2. When Lupin is their teacher, they learn about a series of dark creatures and how to best beat them. For the exam, they basically go through an obstacle course to deal with the creatures they learned about throughout the year and Harry is the only one to completely ace it (Hermione gets tripped up at the end).
    3. Harry is the only one in his class able to resist the effects of the Imperius curse (the one that allows individuals to contol the minds and actions of others). He even resists one that was cast on him by Voldemort in the graveyard. Forget students, very few witches and wizards are able to do this.
    4. The final task in the Tri-Wizard tournament is much cooler in the books; the maze is filled with a series of enchantments and creatures that the champions need to fight through. Harry learns a lot of magic while preparing for this task, practicing with Ron and Hermione, and essentially mastering them fastest of the three and then using them highly effectively in the task itself.
    5. Overall, while Hermione is better at planning, research, and has a more extensive knowledge of magic, Harry is better at improvising and has more raw power/ability. It's widely acknowledged that he would beat Hermione in a straight duel. This is the biggest change in the movies, as pretty much everything helpful and cool that Harry does and comes up with in the books is either done or said by Hermione or Luna.
That's why Harry instructs in the DA, but I'd agree it doesn't make much sense in the movies based on how they've portrayed him.

Just want to say that Harry Potter is not a story about fighting alone, about being the only chosen one to do the whole job. I mean, Harry can have THE moments when its just him for several reasons but in the end, it's always people fighting in the background to make that possible. He always has help? Yes, he is 15, practically had no "dark teachers" that were good and consistent enough for them to fight dark wizards like 50-60-70 year old people, and Hermione and the rest know some magic but not precisely excel, they are too young.

There is definitely a lot more going on in the books than in the films, a lot of that is lost which can make it seem as though not a lot of magic is going on. Really, magic is all around them all of the time it’s just not ‘in your face’. The stories are really a coming of age story about friendship, love, expectations, and most of all loss. The backdrop is in a magical world but it’s not what the story is. If people walk into it expecting just magic they will be disappointed. The foundation of the story is set in loss, death, and loneliness and we watch as the main character discovers love and friendship, experiences what it means to have family and roots but also learns about prejudice, evil, and eventually sacrifice. The books are far better but overall I think the films did well compared to other film adaptations- looking at you Divergent series.

During the fight scene, the reason you felt like Harry was just standing there is because he wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place and he was tricked, the prophecy makes you understand that in the end it has to be Harry to take down Voldemort which is why he couldn’t really fight because if he got struck by the killing curse and died Voldemort would win. I know my comment is long, but I hope you get a chance to look it over... It was probably already mentioned, but Daniel Radcliffe WAS 17 at the time of filming this movie... BUT he is playing 15-year-old Harry here. Each book/film covers one year at Hogwarts (the exception being Movie 8 - Deathly Hallows Part 2 - because it was Book 7 cut in half).
The house elf you saw at the beginning is Kreacher, the Black Family house elf. In the early part, he is loyal only to pure-blood wizards (of which the Black family originally was). You will hear him mutter about "mudbloods" (because of Hermione being in the house), but later (Movie 7) he will become a little nicer. Dobby will also make another appearance! In the books, house-elves are mentioned a lot more... including one they left out of movie 4, Winky. She played a very crucial role in Book 4... so it was a shame that they cut that out of the film.
The "ear" that the kids were using to try and spy on the adults' meeting was called an "Extendable Ear" and was invented by Fred and George Weasley. They invented all sorts of nifty spells and gadgets. Now, this wasn't covered in the film, but ONLY in the book - Goblet of Fire... but Harry won 1000 Galleons (the gold coins) as the "victor" of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. However, he did not want to keep it, because the money was tainted in his mind. Competing in that tournament cost Cedric Diggory his life. He wanted no part of that. Harry tried to give the money to the Diggory family, but they didn’t want it either. So, he gave it to Fred and George to start up their own business of selling their jokes, pranks, spells, and fun items. You will see their new store: Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, in the 6th film.
Because Harry saw Cederic die, he can see what has been pulling the school carriages now. They are called Thestrals... essentially, undead winged horses. They can only be seen by one who has witnessed death. Luna can see them because she saw her mother die. Luna may seem a little crazy in the films, but she is extremely sweet and a very loyal friend. I adore her. The actress who portrayed her absolutely nailed the character!
Yes, Delores Umbridge is part of the Ministry of Magic. She is sent by Cornelius Fudge (the Minister of Magic) to spy on Dumbledore, b/c Fudge was thinking that Dumbledore was after HIS job. She really is a horrid person, with her rules and punishments. You talked over the scene (which is fine, I know you are reviewing)... but the lines she had Harry write were using his BLOOD as the ink and at the same time, carving the letters into the skin of his hand! The actress who portrayed Delores said that the scene where she was punishing Harry was extremely hard for her to film! She really does play the part well though... You really get to hate her in the films! The character of Umbridge was all about power and control... and it didn't matter who was in charge as long as she got what SHE wanted out of it.
The lesson that Snape was attempting to teach Harry was Occulmency... to keep Voldemort from reading Harry's thoughts (you will find out why Harry and Voldemort have this connection later on). Now when Harry was able to repel Snape with his shield charm - allowing Harry to see into Snape's thoughts - you then find out a little about why Snape has hatred against Harry's father. Snape is humiliated that Harry saw that particular memory and ends up not wanting to teach Harry anymore... essentially leaving him vulnerable to Voldemort later on...
In the Forbidden Forest, Hermione's plan was to take Umbridge to Grawp (Hagrid's giant brother) to delay her so they could escape, but Grawp had broken free. Harry and Hermione couldn't perform magic against Umbridge because they knew that would have very serious consequences... They were both very fortunate that the centaurs showed up when they did. Umbridge insulting them was what infuriated them as centaurs are extremely intelligent creatures. Her getting carried off by them was brilliant! Sadly though, this is not the last you see of Delores Umbridge...
Bellatrix Lestrange is an insane dark wizard who is extremely loyal to Voldemort. (She is played brilliantly by Helena Bonham Carter). She is also related to Sirius Black (you can see her on the family tapestry in the Black manor house)! Bellatrix kills Sirius during that battle in the Ministry... and then he fell into the veil of death. So... yeah. Sirius is gone. 😱 Harry did attempt to fight back, and while he does hit Bellatrix with Crucio, she is able to shake it off because in her words, "You have to mean it! You have to want to cause pain!" Angry as he was at the loss of his godfather, Harry is still a good person through and through.
What the dark wizards were looking for in the Hall of Mysteries was a prophecy that was made about Harry and Voldemort. They wanted to know what was said in it. When it broke during the fight, it was lost... and Voldemort was very, very angry about it.
@cisio64123 already brilliantly covers why Harry was teaching all of the students in Defense against the Dark Arts... so I won't cover that again. 😀 Yes, Harry did have lots of help, but he still was a very quick learner! And remember... despite the actor's ages... they are all portraying 15-YEAR-OLD kids who were fighting adult wizards (in the book all the kids did a lot more fighting)! Also, it seems every action movie has a big battle scene at the end, so this is really par for the course! 😉

Again 1st movie, in the devil's snare scene, In the book Hermione knows what the thing is but is panicking while Ron is who calm her remaining her that she is a witch.
In the 2nd movie, Hermione said a line that in the books is Dumbledore who said it. "Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself"
In the 3rd movie, When Sirius black appear, in the books is Ron who has his leg broke but with brave he said "take me instead" while in the movies they change it for Hermione.

I love the actress that plays Bellatrix lestrange (the creepy / fire lady) Helena Bonham Carter (Tim Burton's ex-wife)
She has also played the Queen of hearts in Alice in wonderland movies and the fairy godmother in the live action Disney 2015 Cinderella. (I didn't even recognize her in either movie)
