  • Today Uncle Stonnie is back with the reminder that what most people consider bad weather, is really just weather that provides great dog training opportunities.
If your dog gets excited when you walk towards the door, bundle up and take them outside!
Life's too short for missed adventures!

Hi Stonnie- just came in from a 5 mile walk in 16 degrees weather (feels like 9). If I had a dog right now we would have gone much farther. When we lived in Wisconsin my dog would go out in minus temps but hated to pee icicles so would hold her water.
Here’s my question: any tips working with a dog deathly afraid of thunder? As a kid the neighbors dog jumped out of the basement window when the owners were away and bled to death. Very sad. I knew a number of dog owners in Wisconsin who had this problem and I would imagine you’ve run into it from time to time. Might be a helpful video to send out.

I'm originally from Lexington. But most of my life I lived in Scotland. I did live in Northern Maine for 5 years. But when I lived in Scotland, I watched people walking their dogs regardless of the weather. I also started running sleddogs then. I did that for over 30 years. You go out regardless of weather. These days I live in Georgia. I have a tiny farm, and a rescue Dutch Shepherd. He NEEDS walked regardless of what's going on outside. I've noticed that the worse the weather, the more I have the parks to myself. I love it. When it's raining he sniffs everything. When it's cold he takes his time. I honestly like walking him when the weather is bad.

You are right! I took my Great Pyr out for a trail hike this afternoon in the snowstorm. I thought we might be out for only 15 - 30 minutes - but no! he kept going for the full two miles - sniffing, scratching, digging in the underbrush and thoroughly enjoyed himself. We met only three other people (and one dog) on a normally busy trail. Oh, and because the trail was so quiet, the air was still and the snow was falling steadily, we passed within 50 yards of a beautiful antlered buck! And Shep didn't bark or chase! Now we are both ready for a quiet evening at home.

Stonnie, If my Lab were still alive we'd be outside walking in an ice storm, snow, sleet, hail. Nothing fazed him, as it was just another form of water. My current dog is 4, a rescue and has been with me 2 years. This Winter she actually rubbed her face in the snow for fun, but lay in it - no way, at least not yet. If it's raining, she will hold her pee forever rather than go out and get wet. Trust me, I've asked her - and she said no. :)

Love the reminder to ASK the dog. They'll tell you what they want and need if you listen. My girl is a blue doberman with a thin coat, so she wants to be inside more than me in any inclement weather! But we BOTH put on our wool jackets and raincoats and get out there!

-40 feels pretty brutal and is only fun if you have the right gear and can get somewhere warm immediately when you need to. Exposed skin freezes in minutes and you can frostbite your corneas. This is unseasonably cold for us.

I learned a while ago that inclement weather is among the best weather for training of any kind. Some of the best times I've enjoyed on the rifle range have been in the cold and rain. People think I'm stupid when I tell them to do that when it's wet or windy but it's the best. Nothing good ever comes easy. I'm hoping for many more great memories with the new dog. Excellent advice sir.

@@StonnieDennis Thanks for reply. I once had an over sized Australian Shepherd from the original ASCA breeding. He was my heart dog. I have continued to buy Australian Shepherds, of the original ASCA lines, except for my current one (which did not come from ASCA bloodlines. But AKC). He is lacking in several ways in comparison to my previous AS's. So many Australian Shepherds are being bred for other purposes than farm and ranch work, that there is quite a separation in the breed. Many are bred now for no particular purpose at all. I have learned that Breeding makes a huge difference in what kind of dog you get. You of course, would know that better than I. Any way, I do like your training style. I am in the northern part of TN in a rural area, and totally get your training style. I especially enjoy your reviews on the various dog breeds and what one might expect from them. The 2 Australian Shepherds that I had before the one I have now came from a breeder in KY. They both were wonderful examples of their breed and a huge help in our country living rural life. Not sure I will be able to find another of these kind being bred in the area. I am considering an English shepherd the next time. They are still being bred for farm work here in the East.

Just got back from the afternoon walk with Waylon (a lab - GSP mix with a little who knows what else to get a brindle coat - pic in the thumbnail). It was about 14F, windy, with a little snow. There actually was one other guy out at the park (swamp trail) or we would've had a little off leash time. Waylon didn't mind today's weather...actually he was even more high energy because of the weather. The only weather he doesn't like besides the brutal sub zero temps is when it's raining. He loves being the water swimming, retrieving, etc, but for whatever reason doesn't like rain (lightning & thunder don't bother him).

Who needs a doggy spa when you've got rain? Dogs adore it so much they're out there doing their own version of a "fur-derstorm" dance. It's like a canine flash mob - complete with soggy fur flips and paw-tapping choreography. Forget about staying dry; your dog wants front-row seats to the aquatic symphony. Bad weather isn't just a chance for training; it's an invitation for your furry friend to audition for the next big splash-hit Broadway musical! 🌧🕺🐶

Wouldn't you say though, that if temperatures are below zero that maybe staying inside, and perhaps taking a day or few off is prudent? Because that's what this storm is doing to much of the North American continent, including many places where humans and dogs aren't well acclimated to arctic temperatures. It's warmer at the north pole than in many parts of the contiguous 48 states. We're not talking about just unfavorable weather like rain, a bit of snow. I'm talking, negative temps, not just below freezing in the low 30s and high 20s, negative temperatures where if you were to toss a bowl of boiling water in the air, it would instantly vaporize. Dangers like frost bite can happen within minutes. Sure humans can bundle up, and you can even slap a coat and booties on a dog, but they will always have some sort of exposed skin that's susceptible to frost bite, like the nose and ears.
I love your work ethic, but for many people, common sense isn't so common these days.

    Hi from Ontario, Canada!
We are new dog owners to a Red Lab, 2.5yrs old. It supposed to be -23 C here for the next week. Is that too cold for a dog?

What do I do about my 1 year old black Lab that thinks it's fun to run and slam into my legs, run by and knock my hands ect. So rude and I don't want to hurt my knees!

Ummmmm. It was 1 degree here with brutal wind blowing. I went out with my dog--had her wearing a coat and booties because her feet get cold, and she couldn't wait to get back indoors. Tried it with her bare foot yesterday and I had a three legged dog (switching which foot was up) hurrying as fast as a three legged dog can to get back indoors. She's a 23 pound long legged mutt and can handle heat, but not cold.

Stonnie my awesome black lab has a cream golden retriever father and a chocolate lab mother. How does that make sense? The whole litter were black puppies

Technically they call them goldadors I guess, but my fine specimen looks like an English black lab in the face but a field lab in the body.

There is a German expression: ""Du bist doch nicht aus Zucker, oder?" You're not made of sugar, are you? Used when you want to go for a walk in the rain with someone and they're acting like they think they're going to melt.
