Exactly. This was a very unique moment in the history of the show -- the one time when Gilligan was the only one NOT at fault. And it's one of the earliest episodes, as well, which might explain why the other castaways didn't kill Gilligan for his later screwups.

One of very few times where Gilligan didn't actually screw up.

When you think about it, they could've just as easily COME BACK for the gold after reaching the mainland and getting another ship.

One of those situations where greed takes its toll. At least the castaways learned a valuable lesson from all this, you get greedy, you end up with nothing!

Also, I wonder what was the Skipper using to try to smuggle his bag of gold on board the life raft? At least the girls and the Professor were using plausible means to smuggle one bag each: Ginger - a diary of their time on the island to make a movie out of; Professor - botanical specimens to bring back to his school; Mary Ann - a case of homemade guava jelly.

At least it wasn't Gilligan's fault this time.

See, this is what happens when greed overwhelms common sense.

Hey Friends. So, at 1:29 if you look to the far left of the screen for that one second of time. There is a Man standing on the island just watching the castaways. He is dressed like the Skipper. I saw this on a Gilligan's island blooper video. any thoughts on this strange mystery man?

Maybe he was a lifeguard the show hired in case anyone got in trouble during a lagoon scene. He was wearing a Skipper outfit so if he had to jump in, film footage wouldn't be wasted.

Wasnt there a reptile called 'reggie' in that lagoon once'!? I saw a alligator once in it whe the professor was investigating

I know it's been said before but it's a wonder the other castaways weren't suspicious of the fact that of all the personal items the Howells brought with them on the 3 hour tour, they chose to bring back a set of golf clubs and a huge handmade purse, which of course they were using to try to smuggle a bag of gold each. Of course it could that the others (save Gilligan who used up the last of his gold to buy a coconut cream pie from Mary Ann) were more preoccupied with their own efforts to secretly smuggle one bag each of gold - with 6 bags of gold in the attempted smuggling, it's no wonder the life raft sank faster than the Titanic. This is the sole GI episode where all the castaways participated in a monetary system of sorts; in many episodes the Howells do, especially Thurston, most likely since they were wealthy capitalists.

In this episode "Gilligan" is said 45 times.
