Wow - this is so magical and powerful. I closed my eyes listening to this and I couldn't help but shed a tear just hearing the choir's soaring and divine voices.
It is magically wonderful to see the choir that Bach built still going strong! And they ARE strong! One doesn't listen to this music, any more than one plays or sings it. One becomes this music, or must surely turn to dust in a moment! :) Gloria indeed!

A Gloria almost symphonic, it is incredible... I know by heart this Missa in B minor, but each time it is like the first time... And Bach's music is also so human !!
I get Goosebumps listening to this Gloria..... It's like c reviving tons of memories in my mind. No other music has caused inside me what Bach does. My respects to Mozart, but Bach is with no doubt the greatest musician and composer of all times. Followed closely by Vivaldi.

Someone else has given a good reason, and to expand on that, Bach, knowing that boys would be singing his music, wrote it, either deliberately or intuitively, take your pick, to sound particularly good being sung by boys.
That's a religiously bizarre reason - but nevertheless the color and timbre of young boy's voices matches the richness and texture of Bach's chorale writing. It is voluptuous /austere - sensuous /energetic - a miracle
@VikingMatron Well, I'm an atheist and I enjoy listening to Bach as well as a lot of other music (like Mozart's "Dies Irae" or Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" for example). It doesn't have to be classical music as long as it sounds good to me. I marvel at the abilities of the human mind. It was not your imaginary friend, who wrote this music but humans wrote it for themselves.

He would. Not only is this choir over 800 years old (founded 1212) but Bach himself was its Director for 27 years. It was at St. Thomas and for this choir that he composed most of his sacred choral music. They are the proud keepers of an amazing tradition.
He's singing the old medieval gregorian chant. I think it's there for liturgical reasons (it is a chatholic mass, after all. :P) but it's usually omited since the music isn't played for actual mass anymore.

God gave the world Bach to forever after make atheists look foolish. The music is a glimpse of eternity in heaven. We're privileged to have a foretaste.
He did not have ladies or girls due to an existing prohibition to have women participating in catholic and/or lutheran liturgies. Therefore he had to create most of his church music for what he had in hand: boys. Too bad that only germanic-anglosaxon boys are trained to perform, appreciate and love Bachs music written mostly in German, a wonderful language not easy for other cultures, especially with Latin derived languages.

b/c Bach was the Cantor of the St. Thomas School to which the Thomaner choir belongs. He was the director of that choir, and the choir predates him.
This choir was borne in the Middle Ages. It has 800 years old!!! :)
