- The South China Sea has long been an area of contention, but increased tensions in recent years over issues of territory have placed these waters in the global spotlight. Join WorldBoston and the Rosenberg Institute at Suffolk University as we examine China’s geopolitical strategy in the South Pacific. Professor Peter Dutton, an expert on strategic studies, Chinese sovereignty, and maritime law will lead a discussion on how China’s actions in this potential flashpoint could impact the region for years to come.

I dont agree. How about chinas security with usa navy and bases surrounding china???
China is the first new world-class power since the end of World War II. The current world order was largely designed and built by the United States and her allies and America sees it's interest in the maintenance of that system. In that system China is afforded the rights and benefits of a middling power, which it no longer is. China is not mistaken when it sees American allies, some of whom host American soldiers and warships, on most sides (and Russia everywhere else). That naturally concerns China. At the same time China does things to test American resolve regularly. And while possession of the waters within the nine-dash line in the South China Sea is eventually going to become a fait-accompli because of China's growing military and economic power, it's still a geographically ludicrous claim if you assume that China's neighbors have the same rights as China and America is going to feel obliged to push back.
@Vidya Sagar Rao If the United States insists on matching Chinese strength in China's neighborhood than you are right. Time will eventually hand China a victory. If we can strategically walk back our aspirations of global dominance to one that recognizes China as our equal than a more palatable arrangement can result, but that's a hard sell in the states.
@Vidya Sagar Rao I don't share your pessimism. We'll see if you're right or not.
Can China do freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Mexico or sea of Florida and gulf of Alaska?
Sino-American relations are off to a very bad start under the Trump Administration, and this even after being warmly welcomed by China's President, Xi Jinping: First, the US Navy, since Trump's rise to power, has flouted the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which prevents any foreign country sailing within 12 nautical miles of a country's territorial waters without first getting its permission to do so. The US Navy has sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Scarborough Shoal and the Paracel Islands, angering China, since these islands are owned and settled by China; Second, the US in January 2018 started a symbolic trade war with China, by placing tariffs on Chinese-made solar panels, washing machines and other products; Third, in February of 2018, the US Secretary of State expressed concern about China's growing economic ties with South America, calling into question China's motives in reaching out to South-America, as if it threatens US ties with its southern neighbors. Fourth, on 4 February 2018, the U.S. military has put countering China and Russia, dubbed “revisionist powers”, at the center of a new national defense strategy aimed at nuclear rearmament, casting Beijing as a potential nuclear adversary. The trend is clear. The US is off to a bad start in its relations with China, when the US could have more easily worked with China to its advantage, while there were still expectations for a greater improvement in bilateral relations.
David Ben-Abraham
David Ben-Abraham, Communist China does not legally occupy Scarborough Shoal or any of the Spratly islands. Communist China ignores international law. The US Navy is not the aggressor there. Communist China is the aggressor.
David Ben-Abraham You are obviously just anti Trump or dumb? China owned those islands? Stfu bitch
Which country started using live bullets shooting at others. Who harms who?
I'm not sure if I am right that at one time when there was a seating Chinese head of UN that China had capitalized on opportunistic agenda and started its impressing act towards other country specially in Africa for its global ambition to have control & monopolized its rule in economic power or its infrastructure.
One thing that history will attest to is that China is not a warmongering nation.
That's before. The present China is a different story!

David Ben-Abraham, the US Marines who fought at Chosin Reservoir would disagree with your conclusion that China is not a warmongering nation. The US Marines were there per UN authorization; the Chinese were not.
David Ben-Abraham Only because they’ve had limited military capability. The PLA-N build up which includes massive expansions in its supercarrier fleet from 1 to 7 over the next two decades, and its amphibious assault fleet which will meet parity with the US Navy in the Pacific by 2035 indicates intent to acquire an intercontinental power projection capability. This is not the behaviour of a peacefully inclined superpower but one preparing for war.
South China Sea is Chinese coastal areas and territorial seas
Ulol
Great topic, terrible public speaker!
A country would have to be extremely delusional to think they can take over an entire sea, ahhahahhaaaa, you can't make this crap up.
The US thinks it rules the world and knows whats best for other countries. Lets talk about delusional.
